Gone Fishing . . . And Giveaway
This week I am in Dallas at the Romantic Times Booklovers Convention. It is a giant conference for readers who love romance. I’ve never attended before, but I’m excited about the chance to participate. There are several other inspirational romance authors who will be there, and we are planning to host several workshops including an author panel, a fun reader Pictionary event called Saddle Up and Draw, and a chocolate party hosted by my publisher.

My Beautiful Daughter’s Beautiful Wedding
Hi! Winnie Griggs here. Three weeks ago we had one of those milestone events happen in our family – my youngest daughter got married. Although there were the requisite number of bumps in the road as far as executing ‘the plan’ for the wedding, the ceremony itself was absolutely beautiful. As the proud mother of the bride, I thought I’d share a few pictures from the big day with you.
These first two are before-and-after shots of the bridesmaids
Here’s a shot of me and my husband with the bride. Remember me mentioning there were a few bumps in the road? You can see the evidence of one of those ‘bumps’ in this shot. Just before the wedding, I had an allergic reaction to either my make-up or hair spray or both. As a result, my right eye was swollen almost shut for the whole ceremony and reception. Needless to say, I tried to duck out of as many photos as possible!
Here is a shot of all four of my children just before the ceremony started.
The next two are of my husband escorting the bride down the aisle. I especially like the second shot – the two bridesmaids visible over my husband’s shoulder are our other two daughters and to the right of the bride are me and my mother.

Let’s Go Down To The River
Hi, Winnie Griggs here. Indulge me a moment while I moan over my to-do list. I have major revisions due to my editor in less that two weeks, I need to draft a proposal of my next book by May 1st, we’re in the middle of doing some much-needed home renovations, I’m not quite done with my tax filing yet and to top it all off, my youngest daughter is getting married on Saturday. So to say I’m more than a little distracted is an understatement.
All this is to say, I hope you folks will forgive me for yet another short post.
My newest installment in the Texas Grooms series, Second Chance Hero, releases next month. Part of the plot line in this book has the heroine, Verity Leggett, forming a children’s choir to perform at the upcoming Founder’s Day Festival. One bit of research I had to do was to find some songs that would have been around during that time and that would be fairly simple for the children to learn. But I didn’t necessarily want songs that were not actually “children’s songs”. While digging in to this, I recalled a church service several year back where a very young boy sang Down In The River To Pray – solo and a capella. So I looked into the history of the song and found that not only was it around at this time, but that it’s origins are the source of some debate. Various sources claim it to be an Appalachian song, a folk hymn, a gospel song and an African-American spiritual. There are even some who hint that it has some American Indian influences woven through it.
Whatever its origins, it’s a song I enjoy listening to. Here is a link to a version sung by Alison Krauss, the singer who brought it back to popularity with her performance on the soundtrack of O Brother Where Art Thou. Down To The River To Pray

Introduction and a Giveaway!
Thank you for the wonderful welcome to Petticoats and Pistols ~Wildflower Junction! It is a thrill to be here among such gifted story-tellers. I look forward to getting to know all the fillies better and talking about books, stories, and the wild and crazy West.
I thought for
this first post, I’d give readers here a small insight into my life. Don’t worry– I’ll keep it whip-stitch short and lollipop sweet.
I live in the Midwest with my husband. My three sons have grown and are off on their own, but thankfully come home often. I do need those great bear hugs! Not a one is a real cowboy…however my youngest seems to have the cowboy spirit of independence, ingenuity, and love of adventure in the wild.
My stories are often set in southern California where I grew up. I was surprised to see my first story – The Angel and the Outlaw – published as a western because it actually takes place at the lighthouse on the peninsula in San Diego harbor. It is set in the 1870s and has a western “feel” with Spanish flavor. I drew inspiration from that lighthouse and the whaling station at its base. Of course…it did have an outlaw and guns… My next two books take place in Texas, the result of a family trip to the Alamo. I had goosebumps walking through there and discovering the history. My latest book is The Gunslinger and the Heiress which again is set in early San Diego.
In January I left my day job so that I could write more. I have so many stories
inside that are wrestling to get out. It’s a fun, exciting new page in my life and I’m so excited that Petticoats and Pistols will be part of it. Besides writing, I hope to get back to some of the things I haven’t had time for–things like quilting, gardening, traveling, and always–my FAMILY.
I’d love to have you introduce yourself and tell me where you hang your hat (I know there are some here from Australia!) and what you like to see here at Wildflower Junction. I will send a copy of The Gunslinger and the Heiress to one lucky commenter. (Name will be pulled from my Stetson.)

Do you find stories with children in them much deeper or would you prefer it only to contain adults? For myself, I think a child/children adds so much more emotion and depth. All three of my Bachelor of Battle Creek series contain children.
