The third book in my Wyoming Legacies series is in stores now! TRAINING THE K-9 COMPANION follows Cade Moulten, a rancher opening a high-end horse-boarding operation, and Mackenzie Howard, the new veterinarian in town, as they train little Tulip to be a therapy dog for his grandmother. This Love Inspired book takes place during the summer in fictional Jewel River, Wyoming.
I enjoyed learning how rural vets utilize mobile trailers to treat cattle and horses on ranches. I also love writing books with dogs in them. Talk about a win-win! Mackenzie’s trying to convince local ranchers to trust her with their cattle, but she’s terrified she’ll make a mistake and lose an animal. And Cade needs high-paying clients to offset the reduced rates he plans on charging the locals to board horses at his new stables. On top of that, Cade’s mother insists on training a therapy dog to comfort his beloved grandmother, who has Alzheimer’s. Poor Cade never knows what to expect when he visits Nana.
Dementia and Alzheimer’s are terrible diseases. My father suffered from Parkinson’s and dementia, and I spent a lot of time at the nursing home with him before he passed away. I’m blessed with a supportive family who loves Jesus, and this story reflects it.
Don’t worry–the book isn’t all gloom and sadness! Cade’s mom is an unrelenting matchmaker. Add the warm, rowdy members of the Jewel River Legacy Club, and you won’t want to put the book down.
Man’s best friend…
Could be the key to a second chance.
When rancher Cade Moulten decides to get a therapy dog for his ailing grandmother, he doesn’t expect a fluffy Pomeranian—or a pretty veterinarian trainer. But Cade will do anything to prove he’s a changed man, even train the small K-9 alongside Mackenzie Howard. Soon the weekly sessions with Mackenzie have Cade wishing for more. But will he risk revealing his shameful past for a chance at acceptance?

As usual, the restlessness snuck up on him, and, too late, Cade Moulten realized his mistake. Offering to help his mother train a therapy dog was just another attempt to atone for his past.
He couldn’t back out now. He wouldn’t if he could. Cade had other reasons—good ones—for being here.
“It’s not much to look at, is it?” His mother, Christy Moulten, sat in the passenger seat of his truck and stared at the small industrial building with faded gray aluminum siding. Next to it, a matching structure roughly three times its size shared the parking lot. The early June sunshine began to fade as the day wound down.
Cade cut the engine, and his mom bent to pick up her purse. A few months shy of turning sixty-four, his mother hadn’t slowed a bit. Her stylish blond bob, subtle makeup and smile lines gave her the appearance of someone who enjoyed life, but she also had a stubborn streak wider than a country mile.
At thirty-five, he’d mellowed to the point of not minding driving her around town whenever her driver’s license was suspended—and that was often—nor did he mind living with her in the big house on the ranch. Kept her out of trouble.
Maybe they kept each other out of trouble.
He pocketed his keys. “What’s it supposed to look like? It’s a vet clinic, not a spa, Ma.”
Cade had personally taken a loss on this property by selling it to the new veterinarian and her father for pennies on the dollar. Anything to convince a vet to take a chance on moving to Jewel River. When Dr. Bill Banks, the only veterinarian within two hours of here, retired last fall, it had affected every rancher and pet owner in this swath of Wyoming.
Jewel River needed a veterinarian ASAP.

Do you love books with dogs and cowboys? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
Thank you for celebrating my new release with me!
Jill Kemerer is a Publishers Weekly bestselling author of heartwarming, emotional, small-town romance novels often featuring cowboys. Her essentials include coffee, caramels, a stack of books and long walks outdoors in Ohio where she resides with her husband.
Cowboys, dogs, and horses! What could be better.
I am SO with you, Ann!
People and animals a great combo to read in a book.
I’m a huge lover of animals! Can’t get enough!
yes cowboys and their horses and dogs are great!
I couldn’t agree more!
Yes, I think cowboys always make for a good read, and a special dog only adds interest.
I feel the same!
This one is close to home. My mother had dementia but we did not know. She was quite nasty to me but my sister worked against me changing anything. My husband had a police K9 named Hondo. He lived with us and was amazing. He probably would have helped anyone breaking into the house but do not touch the cruiser.
I’m so sorry about your mother. Dementia patients sometimes have extreme personality swings. My father passed away with late-stages of Alzheimers–heartbreaking. I love that your husband had a police K-9! That’s so funny about him not being a guard dog for your house!
Dogs and cowboys go hand in hand together. Love’em.
Great snippet.
My DIL has a Pomeranian as an emotional support pet. It was a former show dog.
My late FIL had Parkinson’s. My late MIL just passed away mid-May from cancer. Neither had dementia, but it was sad to watch the decline.
I love that your daughter-in-law has a Pomeranian support dog. They are such fun, loving little dogs!
My dad had Parkinson’s and late-stages of Alzheimer’s when he passed. It was terrible. I feel for you.
They do go together–thank you!
It seems most of the books I read have cowboys and usually a dog or two!! I have friends who have had to deal with their parent’s having dementia, though thankfully, neither of my parents had it when they passed.
I’m the same, Trudy! I love cowboys! I’m sorry both of your parents have passed.
I love books with dogs. I grew up with dogs. Multiple dogs. When I was 7, my uncle (moms brother) wanted to get us kids a puppy. Mom said yes but dad said no. Well my uncle thought all kids should have a dog so he went and got a puppy for christmas anyway. My dad was so upset, but he put a box with a blanket next to his side of the bed and his alarm clock by the box. Turned out our little puppy, “Lady” slept at the foot of one of our beds. Mine, my brothers Floyd, John or under the crib with Bill. She would take turns and we loved her in our bedroom. She was a fantastic family dog. Mom had a dog, Irish Setter. Sherree. She was a fantastic family dog also. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net
Aww, your sweet “Lady” sounds like everyone loved her. And why is it that dads typically say no to the pet, but then they end up loving them dearly? So cute!
I can recall traveling veterinarians when I was growing up. Not many of them, but a few. Loving and caring for animals is a great occupation. The rewarding times are when all comes out well, but, with life, all things are not rosy. Your story sounds very intriguing. I look forward to reading it soon.
I am so with you on how special veterinarians are. I’m thankful for them! And, yes, life isn’t always rosy. That’s one thing about my books–the characters are always dealing with difficulties, and not every problem is solved. But they find ways to handle or live with the struggles, if that makes sense!
I love working dog stories and adding a cowboy just makes it all the better. I’ve also found that I like stories with veterinarians in them! Can’t wait to read this!
I feel the same!! Thank you!
Congratulations, Susan P! You’re the winner of my book! Please email me at jill@jillkemerer.com!
I love dogs and cowboys aren’t badf either!
i like to read stories with dogs and cowboys in them.
Haha! I agree!
Yes, a good story with a dog is fun.
I just love dogs!
I love books that have dogs in them.
I do, too!
I love books with dogs!!
Same here! And the one on my cover just melts me!
I do like books with dogs and horses in them. Cowboys too.
Give me all three–dogs, horses and cowboys!
This book is totally on my TBR and has been since before it came out. The first book I ever read from Love Inspired was a book by Jill and I loved her writing so much… I’ve been hooked on them ever since. This story sounds wonderful. I love so much about it. But forced proximity, when two people start develop feelings while being around each other… thats some of the best romances!
Jo!! Thank you! This made my day–I really appreciate your kind words!
Nice picture of the dog on the cover. You don’t often hear about Pomeranians as therapy dogs.
Isn’t it cute? I know! Small dogs can be very comforting.
Dogs and cowboys just seem to go together.
I 100% agree!
That cover is so cute! 😀
Love dogs in books!
Every time I look at it, I melt!
Yes! A cowboy with a soft spot for animals is a must! By the way, great cover!
I can’t get enough of the cover!
I love books with cowboys and dogs. I miss living in Texas and seeing cowboys so it’s great to read about them and I have two grandpups so I always enjoy dogs in stories.
Aww, I don’t blame you for missing Texas. I’m so glad you have grandpups! So sweet!
I do love me some cowboys and add a dog or any pet in there and you have the perfect book.
Yes! I am right there with you!
Yes I love books about dogs, horses, cowboys and any other pets and children.
I do, too! If a book has all of the above, even better!
I Love reading books with dogs, and Oh my Cowboy’s Yes Ma’am Have a Blessed Day
Haha!! Yes!! Thank you!
What a cute cover. We are pet people and dogs are favorites. We currently have number 14, all of which hae been rescues. We also fostered puppy litters and special case dogs for the local animal shelter for several years. We kept one from the first litter and one from the last. We also have 2 grand dogs that spend a lot of time with us. So yes, I like dogs in stories. The way “people” in the story treat animals tells you much about their character, whether it is a dog, cat, horse, or any other. I like that you are dealing with dementia and Alzheimer’s in the story. They are affecting so many families today. My husband’s mother had Alzheimer’s and he now now has Parkinson’s, likely from exposure while in the military. Our dogs have always loved him and they are a soothing presence for him. I have seen the calming effect they have had on residents of nursing homes and those in the hospital. Dogs tune in to a person’s physical and emotional state and often make an effort to console and comfort.
I hope the release of Training The K-9 Companion is going well. It sounds good.
That’s so amazing that you foster puppy litters and other dogs. What a blessing you are! My father was in Vietnam, and they’re pretty sure his Parkinson’s was caused by it, too. I’m so sorry your husband is going through it. Hang in there!
The VA now considers exposure to Agent Orange a presumptive for developing Parkinson’s . Most on the ground in Vietnam were exposed and even flight crews, like my husband, had exposure. They keep finding more things that it could have caused. Those exposed to the burn pits in the Middle East has a whole different set of health issues.
Books with dogs are my absolute #1 weakness and I also can’t get enough of cowboys & horses either!!!
Joannie, I am right there with you!!
Cowboys and dog can’t get any better than that!
I know, right? 🙂
Yes, I love reading books with dogs and cowboys.
I do, too!

I love stories with cowboys, and if there is a dog that makes it even better.
I’m an animal lover, too!
I love cowboys and dogs! And veterinarians too!
God bless veterinarians!
Dogs and cowboys are definitely an awesome combination.
I 100% agree!
Jill, I’ve enjoyed reading some of your other books. This one sounds really good.
I appreciate that, Mary!! Thank you!
