Stealing the Preacher – Giveaway!!!

My newest book, Stealing the Preacher, releases June 1, but I received my author copies early and would love to give a couple away. But before I do, I thought it would be fun to share some behind the scenes secrets from the making of Stealing the Preacher’s book trailer.

The marketing director from Bethany House contacted me back in April, worried that they wouldn’t be able to get the trailer done in time for my release because of the long winter they were experiencing up in Minnesota. The snow just wouldn’t melt. Thankfully, God brought the sun out just in time, and one week after the thaw hit, the creative team grabbed cameras, donned costumes, and brought Crockett and Joanna to life.

Dan Pitts, the creative genius behind the camera, actually sneaked in front of the camera for a cameo. Rather “Hitchcock” of him, don’t you think? Dressed as Crockett, he became my leading man, lassoed by the pretty heroine in pink. One of the editorial assistants, Elisa, stepped in to play Joanna and reeled him in. I just love how everyone at Bethany House is willing to get in on the action. Such great sports.

The result is a fun trailer that carries an old-time silent movie feel. Enjoy!

If you’d like a preview of the first three chapters, they are available as an excerpt on my Facebook page. Anyone who likes my page will gain immediate access to the content.

You can find it here.Β

So now for the giveaway! Since Joanna Robbins receives a huge shock when her father presents her with the preacher he stole as a birthday gift in Stealing the Preacher, I thought it would be fun to hear about the most surprising brithday gift you ever received.

I will choose two winners from those who leave comments, so be sure to include your email address to make it easy for me to contact you if you win. Unfortunately, I can only mail to US addresses. I’ll post the winners’ names by tomorrow.

Wishing you all luck!

  1. Thanks Mary and Margaret – Hmm Mary Margaret – isn’t that a character on Once Upon a Time? Or a nun or something? LOL Seriously, though, thank you so much for all your encouragement and support. It means so much!

  3. This looks like a fun book. I can’t wait to read it.
My favorite Birthday memory is probably when my parents threw me a surprise 16th birthday party. We had just moved from Oklahoma City, where I had lived most of my life, to Kansas City, Just a few months before. They invited people from the church we had started attending and it allowed me to make many more friendships so much sooner. I am still in contact with today πŸ™‚

  4. Love the video and can’t wait to read the book.
My most surprising birthday gift was on a visit to my mom, the next day she took me back to the airport. I couldn’t figure out what was going on. I had just got home and she was sending me back? Her gift to me was that I got to fly a Cessna plane. It was so much fun!!!

  5. Thanks for sponsoring a giveaway. πŸ™‚ The most surprising birthday present I ever received was the year my parents bought me a horse. I’d wanted a horse for as long as I could remember and it was the best surprise ever.

  6. This seems like it will be an enjoyable read! I’m adding it to my ‘to be read’ list.

And a surprise birthday present…. Definitely nothing as exciting as a preacher. But I think a KitchenAid mixer is close! πŸ™‚

  7. Is it crazy that I have a love-hate relationship with sneak peek chapters? Love because I’m so excited to read the book, hate because I can’t continue πŸ˜‰

I think my most surprising birthday gift was diamond earrings from my husband (at the time fiance). I thought my bling-quoat had been met, but he surprised me with diamond studs. I wear them everyday.

Thanks for the change to win!

  8. Hi! Love your books! I think my favorite birthday memory is when I turned eighteen and all of my friends had a surprise party for me. One of my best birthdays and lots of fun memories.

  9. I’m so excited to read the next addition of the Archer family. I enjoy and all of your books and can’t wait to receive this one.
I think for my birthday the thing that surprised and pleased me the most was my college tuition paid off!!!

  10. Hi Karen,

Your trailer for your new book is so inviting. My most suprising birthday gift was a suprise birthday lunch given to me by my Sunday School class, when I turned 40. It was so much fun. Thank you for the opportunity to win your book, “Stealing the Preacher.” ajlitton@comcastdotnet

  11. The most surprising “gift” was the arrival of a lady from church at my front door dressed in a gorilla suit on my 30th birthday. My mother had hired her to come deliver balloons and sing to me. Thanks, Mom…

  12. Love that trailer. I can’t wait for this book. It sounds like a hoot and the trailer just reinforced that. Fun stuff.

  13. The most surprising gift I’ve ever received? Well, I think that would have to be the one that I got 2 years ago for my 18th birthday from my best friend and her parents. My friend and I were able to meet Beverly Lewis in Lancaster, which was something I was NOT expecting at all!

Thanks for the great giveaway! Can’t wait to read Crockett’s story! =)

  14. Last year for my family threw me a birthday party!! Surprise! it was my first birthday party since I was a child πŸ™‚ I felt so special and loved πŸ™‚

  15. Excited for the book! My biggest surprise was my most recent birthday present. My husband gave me a beautiful blue and white sapphire ring. I have wanted one since I was a teenager. We are high school sweethearts. He totally got me with that one!

  16. Wow – Such great answers from everyone!

Surprise parties, jewelry, a horse, kitchen appliances, a dog, flying a Cessna plane (serious wow points there) and what’s that??? A church lady in a gorilla suit. LOL That’s just hysterical. Even a fiction writer couldn’t have dreamed that one up.

    Love it! Keep ’em coming!

  17. I don’t have any fun birthday stories, but the most surprising gift was that my daughter asked me to go into emergency surgery with her to deliver my first grandchild – a girl. Adaea. We had not expected her to have to have a C-Section and she had a birth coach and originally said she didn’t want me in there at all. But Praise God, when it actually started happening and they had to do emergency C-section, she asked me to be with her. It was the most wonderful surprise and truly the best moments I had with my daughter and granddaughter watching her be born and sharing that with my daughter!

  18. My family and I are pretty practical so I get things that I ask for…like books! But this year my husband surprised me with a Kindle Fire to read the books on. That was fun.

  19. My most surprising birthday gift (& best!) was the year my husband proposed to me! He met me for a birthday lunch & we were planning on going to a baseball game that weekend to celebrate but after walking me back to work, he stayed & after ensuring that we were alone, pulled out a ring & said that I should maybe wear it to the game πŸ˜‰ Next month is 10 years since that happy birthday surprise!

  20. I can’t wait to read your new book! I loved the Short-Straw Bride. My biggest surprise actully happened a couple of days before my birthday. My husband proposed to me. We have been happily married for 21 yrs.
    kayden@ffni.com

  21. I receive one of the best and most shocking birthday presents when I found out I was pregnant with my first child on my birthday!

  22. I’ve not read any of your books yet but I would love to get to.
I enjoy reading books that are set back in the 1800’s. When I read them I get so into them I feel like I’m there too.

  23. Very cute!!!! My favorite gift was my son!! I had him on sept 29 and my birthday is oct 1:)

  24. I love your books. They’re well written, intelligent, and fun. I can’t wait to get hold of this one!
I received my most surprising birthday gift when I was about 16. I used to love to watch all the old B movie horror flicks….”Dracula”, “Frankenstein”, “Them”…but my dad usually had the tv so I couldn’t watch them as often as I wanted. For Christmas that year my parents gave me my very own tv. It was just a 13” black and white but I loved it. (I still watch those movies today.)

  25. I can’t think of a surprising birthday gift, but the christmas after I had my first baby, my mom and husband conspired to get me George Strait tickets. Loved them and I love him! πŸ™‚

    Love your books!

  26. My son surprised me one year by coming 51/2 hour trip one way to see me and put in a flower bed for me and then went back that same day. He also took me out for dinner. Of course he brought my grandson with him to see me. One of the best days in my life.

  27. We’ve got the family themed gifts going now. Love it!!! Pregnancies, births, marriage proposals, family visits. These are the “happily ever after” tales I love to hear!

  28. My senior year in high school my then boyfriend, now husband, surprised me by filling my entire car with balloons! He and his football buddies worked all day blowing up the balloons to accomplish this feat! Needless to say I was late for basketball practice because I couldn’t get to my change if clothes!!!!

My daughter came to me just last night wanting to know if I had ordered your next book yet! We can’t wait to read “Stealing the Preacher.” (She is 12, by the way.)

  29. I’ve been waiting for this book to come out, Karen! None to patiently either! Can’t wait! My most surprising birthday present, hands down, was when I turned 20! The guy I was dating in college took me to a ski lodge for dinner in Utah where we were attending college. After dinner, who should join us for dessert but ROBERT REDFORD!!! WOW!!! It was his ski lodge and he saw us celebrating my birthday! He was amazing – so laid back in his old jeans and sheepskin jacket! He even signed my menu! Talk about best birthday gift ever!!!

  30. This year on my birthday, I received an email letting me know I had won a Kitchen aid mixer. That is the best birthday present I have ever received. Even got to pick the pretty red color : )

  31. For my 21st birthday, my best friend in college arranged a surprise “clue” day, where I got to spend time with each of my friends doing a surprise activity, culminating in a surprise birthday party!

  32. I love the Archer family and I am so excited about this book!

My best surprise birthday gift came from God. I was 24, had just started a new job, and had been to a work training with some of my new coworkers. Door prizes had been given away at the training, and everyone in my group but me had gotten a door prize (on my birthday no less). However, on the way home, God had a birthday surprise for me. A beautiful double rainbow. πŸ™‚

  33. This looks like a great book. Hope I win a copy, but if not, I’ll be borrowing it from the library – or maybe treating myself to a trip to the bookstore to buy it. Okay – my most surprising birthday gift was a birthstone ring I received for my 13th birthday instead of getting my ears pierced. I begged to get my ears pierced, but then chickened out when my parents finally took me for my birthday. Since they had to scramble to come up with a new idea, my mom gave me her birthstone ring that she had received from her parents on her birthday when she turned 13.

  34. I think that every year my birthday is great- I can’t really choose between one special one! Spending the day with my family and friends is enough for me. =)

    jennycohen104(at)gmail(dot)com

  35. My birthday sometimes falls on Thanksgiving, so I think that any year that happens is the best- I get to have all sorts of special foods and desserts! πŸ˜‰

    thejesusfreak62(at)gmail(dot)com

  36. I can’t really think one specific birthday present….I think that every year has been special for me as well.

I can’t wait to read Stealing the Preacher!!!!

    Emreilly303(at)gmail(dot)com

  37. For my 21st, my dad and his new wife got me a wooden toilet paper holder shaped like a fish. My, was I surprised to find out that was all in the package.

  38. My most surprising birthday gift happened 5 years ago. My husband took me to a live performance near us at a hotel resort and I saw Paul Anka perform. What a wonderful birthday that was.

  39. I received a guitar from my parents when I was a teenager. My dad, the creative gifter in the family, wrapped the guitar–on purpose–super tight, so I could tell what it was! Bright blue wrapping paper, hugging the guitar perfectly. He even individually wrapped each tuning peg!!

  40. My greatest birthday surprise was just a year ago! My brother had moved out of state several months before (the 1st to leave home) and on top of missing him like CRAZY, I was having a really tough year. About a week before my birthday, I woke up to the biggest, happiest surprise of my life! My brother was sitting on the edge of my bed, and he smiled and gave me a bug hug and asked if I’d be ready to leave by the next day! So I packed up that day and the next morning I was off for a 3 week visit to my brother’s (which included a fantastic birthday)!! Family is so important to me, so to receive a “missing piece” of our team brought such joy to my overwhelmed little heart πŸ™‚

Thanks so much for hosting a giveaway! My email is pocoauthor(at)gmail(dot)com

  41. I love the trailer. The music track for your silent movie is great. My husband plays piano and at times he’s talked about wanting to try and play along with a silent movie.

The book looks great and I can’t wait to read it. It’s been on my to-be-read shelf for a while now.

I would have to say that my best birthday present was in 2007. My birthday is just before Christmas. My son had just gotten back from a tour in Iraq in October and I hadn’t seen him yet. He was planning on coming home for Christmas but I had been told that he wouldn’t arrive until after my birthday. The day before my birthday my husband headed off to work as always. He then called at about 2 saying that there was a major power outage and the company was shutting down early. Just after he got home the doorbell rang. When I opened the door it was my son. They had cooked it up to surprise me for my birthday. Just telling about it has me crying again. It was so good to see him.

  42. The best birthday surprise I remember was my husband sent me tickets to come visit him in Korea where he was stationed for the year.

  43. Oh Karen I cant wait for the book! I just left you a FB comment not to long ago. I have read short Straw Bride at least six times this year and that I couldn’t wait till your next one! I love the characters in the books. I think my most surprising birthday gift was being reunited with my dad. Growing up my dad didn’t stick around and We never saw him. As I got older I thought that he should at least know that his only daughter was getting married. anyway after that he wrote me back and apologized and asked for forgiveness. Anyway we continued to write back and forth but 3 years ago my dad got in touch with my husband and asked him if he could come down to surprise me for my birthday. My husband knowing that I had forgiven him thought this would be a great surprise. I knew something was up but I couldn’t figure it out. My husband said he was bringing me home a gift from work and when he called to say he was home I went outside to see what it was and then saw my dad after 25 years. It was a great birthday present! We now have a wonderful father daughter relationship.

  44. A birthday which I will forever remember was a weekend away in the mountains. First time on a trip for my birthday.

  45. My birthday is in Oct and my Brother’s in May. Our patents really shocked us by throwing a surprise party for both of us in August. Neither of us had a clue. I had wanted the Strawberry Shortcake trolley for my dolls…and they bought me one. I was so excited, I cried. I still have it today!

I cannot wait to read Stealing the Preacher! My email is sunydey26@aol.com

  46. My 30th bday is next Friday so can we just say this giveaway would be a great surprise πŸ˜‰ lol, Well one of my best bday gifts/surprise was when my husband who at the time was my boyfriend (I was 17) took me to the ocean, it was the first time I had ever been. And I loved it! πŸ˜€

  47. I LOVE your books!!! I have re-read To Win Her Heart and A Short-Straw Bride several times! There’s something about how you share the emotions of your characters that I just can’t get enough of.

My most surprising present was when my husband threw me a surprise party for my 30th, and my mom and youngest sister drove 12 hours from Utah to be there for it! I was so clueless- I honestly had no idea or even suspected, which made it so much fun πŸ™‚

Thanks for the giveaway! I can’t wait to read Crockett’s story!
    colorvibrant[at]gmail[dot]com

  48. What a fun trailer! Great job to the crew that put it together!

The most surprising birthday gift I ever received was from a guy who was a close friend. He gave me a pink Care bear that was named something like Baby Hugs Bear, along with a sweet note about how it reminded him of me. It was just before he was leaving for a 3-week military training. When he returned, we started dating and this weekend we’ve been married for 6 years!

  49. My greatest surprise came on my 21st birthday where I was proposed to by my husband of now 10 years. He has been the greatest blessing in my life.

Thank you for all the fun books and giveaways! Be blessed!

  50. I can’t wait to read Stealing the Preacher!

I think my most surprising birthday gift was a few years ago when I was giving tickets to an Alan Jackson concert.

  51. By the way, MY birthday is Monday – Yes, it’s a national holiday. Karen Witemeyer day, otherwise known as Memorial Day. Ha! My birthday present was delivered yesterday, though it wasn’t much of a surprise. Our refridgerator went out a couple weeks ago and we finally got around to buying a new one. Tonight we get to have a food moving party (from the old fridge in the back room) and a decorating party as I put all those great fridge magnets back on. It just doesn’t look right standing naked in my kitchen. πŸ™‚

  52. soooo intriguing! Can’t wait to read….and would LOVE to win an author’s copy! πŸ™‚

  53. Hi Karen been following you all over the place so here I am trying to win this book….
Happy Birthday Monday, I share mine with Martin Luther King..
Going to read this book somehow -story sounds great..
    thanks for sharing.
    Paula O

  54. My biggest surprise for my birthday was when my whole family and all my friends threw me a huge surprise party when I turned 16. They completely had me fooled!
    Brittany M.

  55. I love that cover! Congrats on the book! Best b-day surprise for me was going on our very first cruise / Disney trip when I was turning 11. It was an amazing trip!

  56. The most surprising gift was a present from a girl at school when I was in 7th grade. I hadn’t really had any friends before that year when she and I became friends. She kept mentioning that she had a present for me, but I was expecting something small. Then she presented me with a huge gift bag full to the brim. I don’t remember everything that was in it, but there were lots of candles and a candle holder. I think the true surprise gift that she gave me was a friend. I hadn’t expected a friend, and I definitely hadn’t expected her to be my friend (we didn’t exactly hit it off when we first met). I haven’t seen the girl for 3 years, but I still have the candles and the candleholder to remember her by. I’ve had many friends now, but I’ll always remember her as the person who showed me what friendship meant and felt like.

  57. I forgot to mention in my email how much I loved your trailer! How fun! I don’t watch many trailers but yours was especially fun. On that alone I would read your book – if I didn’t already love them!
    Valri
    westernaz@msn.com

  58. My biggest birthday surprise gift had to be last year when my husband surprised me with my own iPad!!! He had one foe work and I had really wanted one but had no idea that I was getting one and I have enjoyed it so much especially reading books!!!
I can’t wait to read this new book!!!!

  59. What a fun question! I love reading the replies. Thank you so much for hosting this giveaway-I’m a new fan of yours having recently been introduced to “Short-Straw Bride” and “A Tailor-Made Bride”, so I can’t wait to read this newest release!

I have two birthday presents that were a fantastic surprise, so I hope it’s not cheating to mention both of them. The first was when I had my Sweet 16 party. All of my friends and family pooled their money together to buy me an iPod. iPods were just becoming popular then, and I’d wanted one really badly but didn’t have the money. My family has always struggled financially, so I wouldn’t have been able to afford one otherwise, and it’s six years later and I still have it! They’d wrapped my iPod in a huge box to make me think I was getting something bigger, so it definitely came as a surprise! The gift really wasn’t the iPod though. It was the fact that so many people had joined together to take the time to bless me. I’ll never forget their faces as I opened the box-they were just as excited to give me the present as I was to receive it! Their gift of love and that someone took the time to organize that always brings tears to my eyes.

The second best surprise birthday present I received came this year. When I was little, I had a toy fairy that flew into the air from the base she was attached to when you pulled the string. To a little girl’s eyes, she practically was a fairy. She was beautiful, she could fly-what more could you ask for?! Unfortunately, I’d only had her a day when I pulled the string while my mom and I were walking outside. She flew majestically up, up into the air, annndd… fell straight down into the cracks of a sewer drain. Obviously, I was devastated. Every kid has that one toy, and she was mine.

Well, I happened to mention it again to my mom recently, just jokingly (and somewhat truthfully) saying how I’d never forgotten about that toy and how sad it was I’d only had her a day. Imagine my surprise when I opened my gift this year and found the very same fairy inside! Somehow my mom had gotten on the internet and managed to find it. It’s not like I’d really play with it anymore, but it’s the nostalgia of the gift, and the fact that, after all these years, she isn’t really lost! It was like the fulfillment of a childhood dream, haha.

Now I love seeing my niece’s eyes light up when she plays with her just as mine used to when I was her age. It’s the gift that keeps on giving, and as long as we stay away from any sewage drains, I think we’ll be okay! πŸ˜‰

  60. Well my family is actually pretty normal so I haven’t received any shocking gifts, yet (there’s still plenty of time). The oddest present I’ve received was when a friend mailed me a stick of gum. Just 1 piece. πŸ™‚

  61. Great stuff, everyone!

Lizzie – I particularly liked your fairy story. So sweet!

And Valri – Thank you for your kind comments on my trailer. I was so happy with the way it turned out!

    Let the party continue…

I’ll be posting the winners tonight, so there’s still plenty of time to enter.

  62. Can’t wait to read this book. I’ve loved everything else you’ve written so waiting very impatiently for this one.
I think the gift that surprised me the most was when my husband told me to ask my boss for time off, because we were going to Hawaii for my birthday. Awesome present!

  63. Most surprising present was the year I turned 50 — my husband was out of town but made arrangements for friends to call me every hour to wish me a “Happy Birthday” — including 3 international friends. In addition, he had made a scrapbook with photos and stories from friends. It was an amazing surprise!

  64. Congratulations on the publication of your new book! And your first sequel! πŸ˜€ I’m really looking forward to it because I loved the Archer brothers in “Short-Straw Bride.” And I love the way they made the end of the trailer turn into the cover of the book. Very clever!

The most surprising gift I’ve received for my birthday was really something pretty simple but it meant a lot to me. It was a chocolate cake my co-workers surprised me with on my birthday. The thing is, I had been working at that job for about 5 months and I had moved away from my family for the first time in order to take it. I was feeling pretty homesick by the time my birthday rolled around. So I was completely shocked when instead of the walking into the meeting I was expecting, I was presented with a birthday cake and “Happy Birthdays” all around. I’m pretty sure I cried. It meant a lot to me and really made me feel appreciated and welcome in this new place.

    All the best,

    Stephanie

  65. I’m sorry, I forgot to include my email address. It’s:
    truthblossom[at]yahoo[dot]com

  66. That is the cutest cover ever, Karen. Someone who posts today is going to be very lucky.

I don’t know about birthday surprises, but my best present ever came two days early–my darling grandson Alec who was almost born on my birthday. We’re a lot alike–two Libras.

  67. Love the cover, Karen!
My most surprising (& best!) birthday gift was given to me a few months after my 40th birthday. My nephew, PJ, was born after a trouble ridden pregnancy for my sister. She made me his Godmother! He is my only Godchild, so for me he pretty much does no wrong! From the first moment that I held him in my arms, I felt this strong connection to him. I don’t have any children, so I always say that he’s the son that I never had but should have. PJ & I are very overprotective of each other, & are extremely close. Other than my hubby, he’s my favorite person to be with! He was worth the wait, and was definitely my best & most surprising birthday gift ever!

  68. Sounds like a great book. Would love to win and read it. Thank you for the chance.
    kmgervais(at)nycap(dot)rr(dot)com

  69. Love the book trailer! My most surprising birthday gift is the necklace my husband gave me this year–he’s not usually a jewelry giver, so it has a special place in my heart! Please enter me in the giveaway, and thanks!

  70. As a single working girl, my budget is kind of tight. For my most recent birthday my parents gave me a very generous money gift for a plane ticket to see family on the West coast (I live on the East coast). What a blessing!

  71. I would say my most surprising gifts I have ever received were from my sister and brother last year. My sister sent me a box filled with items representing each month. I turned shhhh 60 and everything was either 61 (60 with 1 to grow on) or it had 60 in the title. My brother, bought me a Kindle Fire when he was visiting from Texas and then a couple weeks later a package arrived on my doorstep with a Vera Bradley purse, awesome wallet and cover for my Kindle. I was so surprised at all the gifts that I cried every time I looked at them.

Karen, I love your book covers especially the one for Stealing the Preacher. I would love to be entered into your giveaway. Thank you for your generosity.

    Smiles & Blessings,
    Cindy W.

    countrybear52 AT yahoo DOT com

  72. I forgot to say that I loved the trailer for Stealing the Preacher. The music sounded so much like a player piano and the dffect on the camera lens added to the idea that we were watching something from that time period. Absolutely a job well done.

    Smiles & Blessings,
    Cindy W.

  73. My friend and I were celebrating my birthday at the Magic Kingdom at WDW, when my friend decided she was thirsty. So we went into a snack place to get a drink. I had my birthday button on so when I stepped up to the counter, the cast member handed me a vanilla ice cream cone. For free! Beat the water I was about to order.
Can’t wait to read this book.

  74. The best birthday gift I received was an iPod touch in my 12th birthday! I love all of your books so much!!

  75. I have received many gifts over the years but my most surprising was when my best friend (who is a man and always calls my Sunshine) gave me a gold necklace and pendant that has a sun on it and says “You are my Sunshine”. I was completely choked up when I opened it. Thank you Karen for the giveaway. I just keep trying to win this book! Maybe this time’s the charm. LOL

  76. My most surprising birthday gift came from my Great Grandma. We were having some financial trouble when I was about 9, we had moved the previous summer but things hadn’t exactly worked out. My Great Grandma was born in 1918 so she was definitely old enough to remember the Depression and rationing of the war years, she was also just naturally a practical woman. On my 9th birthday she made a cake for me and gave me my present, opening the box I found……. Flour, sugar, and cake mix! She knew I was learning how to bake and enjoyed it plus she wanted to get me something I could use. for the next several years it became tradition to receive things like flour, sugar, cake mix, chocolate chips, brown sugar, powdered sugar. While it may seem funny to other people I just loved those gifts from her. And in case you are wondering, yes, she did give other things besides flour. I have 2 doll quilts, a baby quilt (when I was born), 2 regular quilts, crochet covered hangers, a crocheted bell, books…. Each and every one are special to me, and so are my memories of cake mixes and flour. She died last year, a couple of months before her 94th birthday and I miss her dreadfully.

  77. Since my birthday is on Christmas day, it has become hard to remember which gifts were for Christmas & which were for my birthday. One of the most memorable gifts was a walking doll that my grandmother gave me – it was an offer given by a coffee company, she saved coffee can lids to help get the doll. The doll was made with different hair colors – the one I received had long blond curls (as did I), my music teacher collected dolls & had the same doll – hers was a brunette. I remember looking at her dolls when I would go to take my music lessons.

    Thanks for the giveaway opportunity!

  79. My most surprising birthday gift was eleven years ago this September. My mother had been diagnosed with lung cancer that had metastasized into 14 small brain tumors two months before. She rapidly went down hill after diagnosis and by the time September came along her memory wasn’t very good anymore. Usually she didn’t know who she was talking to. That day she had my dad dial my phone number and she told me, “Happy birthday, Dianna. I’m very proud of you.” It took all her strength my dad said but that’s a gift I’ll never forget. She died ten days later on her birthday.

  80. My most surprising birthday gift was one from my husband. He had made reservations for a much=needed weekend away for the two of us. He had rented a small cabin, took me out to a wonderful dinner, and presented me with a lovely wrapped gift (jewelry)! What a surprise!

  81. The most surprising birthday gift I received was when I was about 10 or 11. My aunt had made the most AMAZING looking cake for me and I drooled over it all day eagerly awaiting my first piece after dinner.

Finally the time came and the cake came out with candles blazing. They were the “surprise” candles that re-light, but being an April Fool’s baby those didn’t really catch me off guard since they’d been used so often I recognized the special spark their wicks had.

Anyhow, so I went to cut into the cake and it wouldn’t slice. I had dented the heck out of the bottom of a cake pan before I realized the special “cake” was just a beautifully iced cake pan!

Mercifully, they had another cake – a REAL one – in the kitchen for me, but to this day the family still remembers the fast one they pulled on me that day!!!
