Racing & Romance ~ A Dreamy Combination

If I say “Dr. Dreamy” who comes to mind? If you said Patrick Dempsey then we’re thinking along the same lines.

Patrick-Dempsey-American-Actor

Recently, I traveledto Daytona Beach, Florida, for a week’s vacation. While it was nice (really, really nice) to get out of the cold for a few days, the main reason for the trip was the Rolex 24 Hours at Daytona—a sports car race that lasts for 24 straight hours.

How does car racing tie into romance and Dr. Dreamy?

Me and DreamyPatrick Dempsey, actor and star of many “Happy ending” movies, owns a race team and drove in the race!

As part of the four days of festivities, spectators may walk through the garages and get up close with the cars and technicians. And while Patrick wasn’t there, I did get to stand quite close to his car (you’ll have to trust that his name is in the list of drivers just above the door).

Now you know how sports car racing and romance fit together.

What Do Writers Do When They’re Not Writing?

IMG_20140110_200735What do writers do when they’re not writing? They hang out with other writers! This past month my local romance writer’s group hosted a small regional conference. With my deadlines coming closer together these days, I have less and less opportunity to attend our monthly meetings. In order to give back to the group, I decided to chair the conference committee.  It’s a lot of work, but a lot of fun as well. This year we invited members of two other groups in our region to attend. We hosted workshops, enjoyed some meals together, watched a movie, and generally had an awesome time. Our very own Mary Connealy and Renee Ryan were in attendance as well as former filly, Cheryl St.John.

I confess, I made my first slideshow for this post…fingers crossed that it actually works!

The movie we watched was ‘American Dreamer’ with JoBeth Williams from 1984. If you haven’t seen the movie, it’s darling. A housewife wins a writing contest and the grand prize is an all-expense-paid trip to Paris. En route she’s hit by a car, and when she wakes up, she believes she’s the main character in a romance novel.

We didn’t have the proper cables to watch the movie on the screen, so we turned our suite into a makeshift theater. We threw a blanket over the tv and used our projector hooked to the computer. Not an elegant solution, but it sure was a lot of fun.

The Marshal’s Ready-Made Family is almost here! Available for pre-order on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. In February, look for the book on the shelf of your local Walmart The marshal's ready-made familystore. (Barnes & Noble and other retail outlets will order on demand. And if we demand enough, maybe they’ll even stock them!)

4 ½ stars from RT Magazine, Susan Mobley says, “A lovely marriage-of-convenience story, the interaction between the two main characters is a joy to start.”

Gentlemen don’t court feisty straight shooters like JoBeth McCoy. Just as she’s resigned to a lifetime alone, a misunderstanding forces the spunky telegraph operator into a marriage of convenience. Wedding the town’s handsome new marshal offers JoBeth a chance at motherhood, caring for the orphaned little girl she’s come to love.

Garrett Cain will lose guardianship of his niece, Cora, if he stays single, but he knows no woman could accept the secrets he’s hidden about his past. The lawman can’t jeopardize Cora’s future by admitting the truth. Yet when unexpected danger in the small town threatens to expose Garrett’s long-buried secret, only a leap of faith can turn a makeshift union into a real family.

A Cowgirl’s New Year’s Resolutions

Happy New Year!

It’s the Year of the Horse!

According to a recent survey 38% of us will go through the ritual of making New Year’s resolutions this year. Sad to say, only 8% will keep them pass January 2nd.  As someone once said, even the best intentions go in one year and out the other. That’s probably because we insist upon making resolutions that involve giving up something (drinking, smoking) or getting rid of something (weight, debt).

horse

I don’t know what resolutions they made in the Old West, but I’m willing to bet that giving up or getting rid of something was not on anyone’s priority list.  It was more like getting something (land or gold).   Early settlers probably didn’t do any better than modern folks in keeping their resolutions, but you have to give them credit: some died trying.

I plan to take my best shot at keeping my New Year’s resolutions this year—but dying is where I draw the line.

A Cowgirl’s Resolutions for 2014

  • Lose the extra five pounds on my hips.  From now on, I’ll pack only one gun instead of two.

  • Make an effort to see the good in everyone.   Even barbed wire has its good points.

  • Stop treatin’ suspicion as abs’lute proof.

  • Be more generous.  No more keepin’ my opinions to myself.

  • Make exercise a priority—for my horse.

  • Practice my quick draw with my gun—not my VISA card.

  • Keep from taking sides during a shoot-out, especially shoot-outs involving family members.

  • Avoid stampedes by shopping online.

  • Limit time spent on the open range.  That www dot brand sure can waste a lot of time.

  • Clean out closets.  Nothing (or no one) should hang that doesn’t deserve to be hung.

  • And finally: Stop holding up shopping carts and forcing people to buy my book.

I told you my resolutions, now tell me yours. Afraid you won’t keep them?  Not to worry.  I promise not to tell if you don’t die trying.

A Wishing For a Cowboy Christmas

Happy New Year’s Eve!

RR ArticleWishing for a Cowboy Web
Today, Tracy Garrett & Phyliss Miranda are sharing their two stories from WISHING FOR A COWBOY.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM TRACY GARRETT

When I  started writing Her Christmas Wish and first “met” Katie & Will, I knew they were opposites in so many ways. Where Katie was fiery tempered, Will was calm and deliberate. Katie came from a working-class Irish family, where money was tight and special sweets like Christmas cakes and cookies were anticipated even more because they were only made once a year. Even a simple pound cake, like the one Katie made for Will in Her Christmas Wish was a rare treat because of the sheer number of ingredients it took. Katie would have had to save her pin money for many months to be able to afford a dozen eggs, a pound of butter, a pound of sugar and rose water just to make a cake.

Will, on the other hand, was from a wealthy family, and something as simple as a pound cake could be served whenever a member of the family wanted it. But, even with his privilege, Will worked. He knew the value of his inheritance because he knew what it took to earn it.

IMG_3614And that had to make him love his Katie even more. When Katie made Will an old-fashioned pound cake, he loved it not only because it was his favorite, but because of what Katie sacrificed to buy the ingredients—maybe fabric for a new dress or hair ribbons or a hot cocoa after ice-skating with her friends.

Have you tried Katie’s Old-Fashioned Pound Cake? The recipe is included in the Anthology, Wishing For a Cowboy. In fact, there are eight recipes in all – one from each of the short stories. Check them all out!

HER CHRISTMAS WISH
Her only wish for Christmas was the man who left her behind.

Even a woman capable of living on her own…
Kathryn McConnell is a widow celebrating a milestone birthday alone. Though she feels a woman should be able to mourn the passing of her thirtieth birthday any way she wants, she won’t turn away a cowboy in need of lodging—until she learns it’s the man she’d expected to marry thirteen years earlier.

…never forgets her first love.
Will O’Brien had challenged his father’s prejudice against the woman he loved only to discover he was unable to stand against his family’s wealth and connections. Without a way to support his bride, Will struck out for the west, determined to earn a living for them both. When he returned after two years with no word from Katie, he found she’d married another and moved away. Heartbroken, he returns to his work, but never stops hoping to find her.

When chance lands Will at the remote stagecoach station run by the widowed Kathryn, he grabs at the opportunity he’s been handed, hoping to win back the only woman he has ever loved.

Happy Holidays to you all from Phyliss!

datenut candyWhen I agreed to write a short story for Wishing for a Cowboy, one of the requirements was to have a recipe to share with our readers.  The concept was easy for me since each of my single title books have a recipe in the story and then it’s listed in the back of the book.  In A Christmas Miracle, I selected date nut loaf candy which my grannie made every year for Christmas.  It was only fitting, plus the ingredients are indicative of what would be available in 1889.

Here’s a little excerpt from my story in Wishing for a Cowboy:
Christmas 1889

Texas Panhandle

Children should not suffer for the sins of their fathers, Mattie Jo Ashley thought, as she put two mugs of beer on the table for a couple of regulars of the Longhorn Saloon.

Lucas Jones had posted the House Rules on each wall. Although the watering hole was one of only two in the temperance colony known as Carroll Creek, Texas, its owner wanted to make sure everyone understood what he expected. He wouldn’t stand for a rowdy crowd that might run away his patrons who never missed three opportunities.  A good tent meeting.  A good church sermon. And, a good drink with a quiet game of cards.

Mattie Jo looked up at the rules posted prominently at eye level.

Rule 1:  Check your weapons at the door.

                Rule 2:  No cussing allowed.

Rule 3:  Rowdy behavior will not be tolerated.

Rule 4:  No touching my ladies.

Rule 5:  Only women are allowed upstairs.

The swinging doors flew open and her friend and fellow saloon girl Violet rushed in. Not bothering to acknowledge anyone around, she literally screamed, “Mattie Jo!” She rushed on without taking a breath. “The baby’s taken a turn for the worse.”

Blood ran like cold well water through Mattie Jo’s veins. “Slow down, Violet, and tell me what is going on with her.” Her heart beat out of control. She couldn’t lose another family member.

“Tell me exactly what’s going on.” Mattie Jo’s asked again. With each word her legs got weaker. It wasn’t typical of Violet to get so upset, even though it involved Mattie Jo’s baby sister, Katie.

“She won’t eat. Her eyes are more matted than ever. One is completely shut.”

“Her fever has gone up. Cool towels haven’t helped, so I gave her a cold bath. By the time I left, it still hadn’t brought down her fever. I don’t want to upset you, but it’s a whole bunch higher. She’s even more listless, refusing her bottle and is coughing more. I think she seems to be having a little trouble breathing.”

All of the worsening conditions Violet described balled up and hit Mattie Jo between the eyes. She swallowed hard and looked over the crowded saloon at her boss, Lucas Jones, who was delivering a tray of drinks to another table of card-playing cowboys.  Tears brimmed in her eyes, just thinking about the possibility that she might lose her precious sister.  She needed to go home and take care of her, but also had to work her shift because the jar in the kitchen out at her place had only three pennies and a dime in it. Not enough to pay for the doctor to make a house call especially three miles outside of town.

Phyliss and Tracy will give away copies of the anthology to two winners, so they can try all of our recipes next Christmas … if not before.  Happy Holidays!

Merry Christmas from My Cowboy & Me

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM

                   MY COWBOY & ME

Christmas 2013 logo P and P

What happened in 2013? Nothing catastrophic comes to mind, which is always nice, except I’m afraid that if I think long enough something will come to mind, so I’ll type fast.

I’m getting my books written a little faster than before. My 27th book released in September and number 28, 29, 30 & 31 are coming in 2014, (I’ve counted that a couple of times. Is that right? Four books in 2014? How’d that end up happening?) with more contracted for 2015 & 16.

I may be running around a little more than when I was working full time but I think I’m going to stop doing that pretty soon. (you may all be hearing a huge collective sigh of relief from my children, that Mama’s visits will be tapering off)

My Cowboy is doing well. We have the calves sold now, which we always do in December. That’s always a huge effort to get them all loaded and shipped, then it’s a big day when we go for the auction in Dunlap, Iowa, after a year’s hard work. They sold well and now we have about a two month break and…wait, WHAT? the first baby calf HAS ALREADY BEEN BORN??? When My Cowboy saw a baby calf out in the pasture, well, his language was of a sort that we aren’t going to mention here on a blog the whole world can read. We’re naming the calf…due in FEBRUARY but for some reason born in DECEMBER….OOPSIE.

Now that I’ve got a little more spare time, with the day job only part time and the books getting done a little faster, I’ve been trying to figure out a bucket list for all the things I want to do before I die. But to my surprise every time I start making one I find myself making a REVERSE bucket list.

Does that happen to anyone else?

Mary Connealy            It’s like I think of some DREAM I have. Something I’ve ‘always wanted to do.’ I put quotation marks around that because I have to fish around deep in my brain to try and remember some dream from my youth. Honestly, mostly I sit around and try to AVOID doing things. Like I try and get My Cowboy to go to town and get milk and bread. Or I try and get him to walk out and get the mail so I don’t have to. Or I drive around with the car too close to empty so I don’t have to get out and put gas in. So that’s how excited I am about getting out.

So… I reflect on what I’ve ‘always wanted to do,’ and I’ll hit on something in some shadowy corner of my brain. Examples:  I remembered I wanted to parachute out of a plane.

Now I think, “What kind of moron jumps out of a perfectly good plane? FORGET IT! OFF THE LIST!”

Or I think, ‘How cool would it be to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon?’

And of course it would be cool, but, oops that’s a long walk. I’m old and fat. I’ll die. So I cross it off the bucket list and think, “I had a lucky escape there.”

See? Reverse Bucket List. If I apply myself, I can get this bucket list down to nothing without ever leaving the house. I think I might be doing ‘Bucket List’ wrong!

So, I’ll maybe come up with some dream someday that’s so cool I don’t want to kick it off the list and convince My Cowboy it’s a good idea (that’s no small trick, he might have a reverse bucket list of his own, plus he might take secret pleasure in thwarting me).

Or, maybe I could have a bucket list made up entirely of things I can go shopping for online. I could handle that. An AMAZON.COM BUCKET LIST.

Hey, that’s cool. I’m starting that.

            Wait.

            I checked.

Amazon has something similar already. Forget it.

Well, then I’ll just go back to whittling down my Reverse Bucket List and in the meantime, I’ll keep busy pestering My Cowboy to get the mail.

God Bless You this Christmas

& Have a Very Happy New Year

THOUGHTS OF CHRISTMAS and Gifts from Charlene Sands

Yesterday, along with my daughter and her little one, a generational trio, we entered the fray of holiday shoppers.   We ventured deep into the battleground known as The Mall and we came out virtually unscathed.   Over the years we’ve concocted a game plan to thwart the system.  Shop early in the morning, plan your strategy, speed along, no dallying allowed and use the coupons to your best advantage.   Then once you get your items home, check off your list, send away for rebates immediately (or you will never do it) wrap the gifts as you go to avoid a Christmas Eve panic attack and PACE yourself.

Stop for coffee with a friend.   Have a pleasant holiday-song inspired lunch with family.  Try not to stress.

Christmas has certainly changed over the years.  So often I hear people say, I wish we could go back to the olden days, when the holiday was less commercial and less frenzied.  Think about the Old West and those homemade popcorn strings, handcrafted gifts, family gatherings celebrating the birth of Christ.

The generous volunteers at Operation Gratitude, making sure our service members receive a Care Package. Celebrating their one millionth care package! My friends Mary and Robin are among the volunteers!
The generous volunteers at Operation Gratitude, making sure our service members receive a Care Package. Celebrating their one millionth care package! My friends Mary and Robin are among the volunteers!

Are the holidays too commercial?   Maybe, but I still see a wonderful spirit of community and giving today.  I still see Toys for Tots, and all other kinds of charitable endeavors bringing joy to those less fortunate.  I still see volunteers working their behinds off to make sure their neighbors have a good holiday season.  I see friends who work tirelessly to send brave soldiers care packages overseas.   I see mothers sacrificing for their children, and fathers working long hours to make the holiday a little brighter for their family.

I see a long-standing icon in my community bringing joy to children with luminous lights of the season on Candy Cane Lane.   From manger scenes and lighted Peanuts characters decorating lawns and reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh and polar bears at the North Pole, these chilly scenes only bring warmth to my heart.

Streets and streets of illuminating decorations at Candy Cane Lane!

While evil and ill will does lurk in the world, I still see the good in people, I see givers and love and hope.

Trey Walker thought he was cursed when it came to women, but after a disaster destroyed nearly everything veterinarian Maddie Brooks owned, Trey offered the petite redhead shelter at 2 Hope Ranch.  Maddie was smart, sexy and good with animals… impossible to resist, yet he vowed not to break her heart.

Maddie knew the temporary arrangement she made with Trey was strictly business.  For over a year she’d tried to get the handsome rancher to notice her, but the man never seemed interested. Now, she’d be living under his roof and using his barn to treat animals.

Could she be the woman to break the Walker Curse?

Celebrate Babies and More Babies with Charlene Sands!!

Secret Heir

It’s true. I admit it. I love to write about babies!  Often they are the most fun you’ll find in a story. From high chair messes, diaper changes and special bonding  toys to charming the hero’s socks off, my baby books are usually highly emotional reads.

Today, I’m simply going to CELEBRATE the release of THE SECRET HEIR OF SUNSET RANCH.  Right now it’s a Hot New Release on Amazon and discounted for Kindle at $2.99!

Here’s a little bit about the story:

A war hero returns to a secret baby surprise in this Slades of Sunset Ranch novel by USA Today bestselling author Charlene Sands

Back from his tour of duty, wealthy Nevada rancher Justin Slade gets the shock of his life. The woman who shared this bed eighteen months ago is in his hometown with a son in tow who looks just like Justin.

Katherine Grady is hiding a dark past, but when she realizes Justin seduced her under false pretenses, she’s livid…even if she still finds him as irresistible as ever. Will their secrets keep them apart or will her hero fight for what’s his?

The Slades of Sunset Ranch

 Reviews:

Review from Debby at  Cataromance: The Secret Heir of Sunset Ranch was an intriguing read. Kat and Justin were both realistically portrayed with the same flaws and issues many of us have. The plot was well played and kept your interest, while the chemistry between Kat and Justin was explosive. A master storyteller, Charlene Sands comes through with another captivating tale, The Secret Heir of Sunset Ranch, a story guaranteed to touch your heart and tug at your emotions.

From Samantha at Goodreads: … Emphasis on the STEAMY. Sands has created a quick weekend read for all those girls who want a romance with a bit more of a kick! I’m talking cowboy boots, knee trembling romance here.   Add the fact that the main character welcomes his child and immediately wants to be there for him, and you’ve got the ultimate romance.

From  Debra on Amazon:  AMAZINGLY GOOD BOOK!  This was a great book. Let’s just say it kept me up late at night because I couldn’t put it down. The storyline and characters were totally believable. Tugged at your heart strings and left you wanting more.

And to celebrate my new release of THE SECRET HEIR OF SUNSET RANCH I’m giving away two of my previous baby books!  (If you already have these books, I’ll replace with other backlist books…not to worry)   Simply tell me if you like to read about babies or not.  What do you or don’t you like in a story where there’s a baby?

Here’s what you can win:

Classic Week…Top Ten Truths About Cowboys!

Classic Week Logo

We all have our own interpretation of what a cowboy truly is.  In romance novels, we tend to gloss over the reality of what it takes to be a true cowboy.  We take our fantasies seriously and dive in, head first and our cowboys have a lot to live up to.

What better way to start CLASSIC WEEK than sharing our thoughts about Cowboys!

But take it from this greenhorn, who once spent 2 hours in a saddle riding a tall horse named Champion over hills, through tunnels and along pastures of sunny downtown Burbank; the trail is a dust bowl of grit, horses are total fly magnets and without shade, the perspiration rate requires more than a woman’s Secret deodorant.  In short, there is nothing really romantic about what cowboys do.  Sigh….

But as readers, we suspend our disbelief and like to think of the cowboy, rancher hero as Adonis in leather boots.  Okay, admit it.  Who doesn’t love a hunky man who sports day old stubble, has incredible deep-set eyes and a rugged, muscled body?  A man who saunters, knows no fear and can hold his liquor?

So, instead of thinking of grime and sweat when we think of cowboys, we think in other, more positive terms.  Here are my truths about the Cowboy, whether present day or from the Old West.

Truth #1 –His sex appeal knows no bounds  – He’s the kind of guy that makes a woman do stupid things.

Truth #2–He’s handsome – who can resist a man with a sharp profile, high cheekbones and deep penetrating eyes (that rake over the heroine at every opportunity)

Truth #3  — He’s built tough – like a Ford Truck, this cowboy is ripped and strong.

Truth #4  –He’s savvy – He’s no greenhorn and his intelligence keeps him in the $$ green $$

Truth #5 — He’s perceptive – He can read a woman’s desire and knows exactly what she likes. (We are talking behind closed doors)

Truth #6– He’s honorable.  Even if he’s a bad boy, he will always uphold his honor.

Truth #7 — He’s charming – when he shows his softer side, he can (and will) charm the pants off the heroine.

Truth #8 – He’s not a fashionista – but when he tips his black Stetson he’s got your attention.

Truth #9 – He’s decent.  It might take him a while to figure it out, but in the end, he will always do the right thing.

Truth #10 – He’s rugged and a man of the earth.  He will die fighting for his land, his honor or the woman he loves.

I’m curious … what trait is most essential to you  in a mate?  Are there any other truths about Cowboys you would like to share?

To celebrate Classic Week and all of you, I’m giving away an advanced copy of The Secret Heir of Sunset Ranch (November release)  and an e-copy of the The Cowboy Contract!!   (Coming VERY soon)

LINCOLN AND ME and a GIVEAWAY!!

For the longest time, probably since grammar school, I’ve been fascinated by our 16th president, due to my father’s nightly sit downs at the dinner table. Dad read four history books a The Lincoln Exhibit week, thick amazing non-fiction accountings of the most memorable men in history. He had a fascination with General George Custer too and read everything written about him from our local library.   Dad put the mundane facts he’d learned together in story form and told us…as if in Deep Point of View, like he’d been there himself.   Of course, Lincoln and the Civil War were among one of his favorite topics.

So when the Lincoln Exhibit came to my town by way of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, we had to see it.   It was one of those goose bump-getting days when I realized just how close to American history I had come.

Pictured to the right is my sister Carol, my hubby, Don and yours truly at the entrance to the museum.Lincoln exhibit 1

Lincoln’s stovepipe hat, protected by a glass case, was the first item we came upon as we entered the museum rooms!  It was a “You had me at the hat” kind of moment that made the price of admission well worth it… ten times so.   There are only three such Lincoln hats in existence, and this one looked nearly untouched.  Dear Abe would use the deep well inside the hat to carry important papers and documents from room to room or building to building.  I love that!

Here’s Lincoln’s pocket watch, also in great shape.

And this image was perhaps the most memorable.   It’s a replica of the room where Lincoln took his last breaths.  In the forefront, encased in glass is the ACTUAL pillow that cushioned Lincoln’s head as he lay dying.  The blood stains are his.

As we exited the Lincoln rooms, this eerily life-like bust was waiting for us. The attention to detail was amazing to see.  The entire exhibit overall was fascinating and I hope if this exhibit visits your town, you’ll have a chance to enjoy it.

Some favorite Lincoln’s quotes:

A friend is one who has the same enemies as you have.
Abraham Lincoln

America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.

In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.
