Kat Wadsworth and Sebastian Jones never imagined their lives would entwine so closely. Forced to flee on a wagon train from a vengeful uncle and an unknown gunman, they live in a hidden canyon with the family that rescued them. But as the days turn into months, they each have separate reasons for wanting to move back to society, and the best way to the independence they desperately crave might be through a marriage of convenience.

However, settling into their homestead in Cheyenne, Wyoming, reveals a different reality for Kat. Her new husband becomes consumed by his inventions, leaving her feeling lonely and isolated. And just when they think they’ve left the danger behind, a mysterious attacker lurks in the shadows, threatening the new life they’ve built. Together, they must confront the perils from their pasts to forge a future with hope and the prospect of love.

I think the opening scene in Toward the Dawn is the funniest thing I’ve written in a while.
Talk about a marriage of convenience. Talk about two opposites that do NOT necessarily attract (though there is a shred of hope they will eventually)
The obsessed inventor hero who was nearly killed by a patent thief.
The asylum escapee heroine who grew up with a father who’s a doctor and learned a lot..until she accused her powerful uncle-in-law of killing her husband. and he locked her away.
Two people with very good reasons to be distrusting and secretive.
When Sebastian Jone finds a woman who wants to escape their hidden canyon as badly as he does…and they both realize, after a year hiding in a canyon together, they know nothing about each other, and neither really wants to ride off to face the world alone…..marriage in the result.
And when they ride toward the dawn, they ride straight into danger. Except which one of them is this killer after?
Their solution is to face down the danger rather then run and hide again. Their only other option is to spend the rest of their lives waiting for another killer.

  1. One wonders how the current paucity of mental institutions affects people being relegated to such places… Your book sounds like it’ll be a “stay up all night page turner!”

    • This whole series A Western Light Series, was inspired by the book The Woman they could not Silence…a woman who was locked in an asylum by her husband because she was an abolitionist and he was pro-slavery and she refused to agree with him. Therefore she must be insane. She spent three years locked up for this and finally, in a really dramatic way not the same way I did it 🙂 she escaped and had to prove herself sane in a court of law. It’s a fascinating true story.

  28. Shared danger is something that can bring people together and help them form a bond. Once that danger has passed (or it is thought to be over) the perspective on the relationship and of the other person can cause a change of feelings. They don’t seem to be the same person you thought they were. It may seem that way, but it sounds like developments will have them looking at things again. IThis sounds like another good, suspenseful read.

  33. It’s disturbing how easily it once was to have women committed to an institution. I’m interested in reading your book. The marriage of convenience trope is one of my favorites.
