Hello, Fillies!!
I haven’t been here in a couple dozen sunsets. Thanks for having me.
I’m a huge fan of vintage Western TV shows that include families. It’s so much fun to delve into family dynamics, wounds and the fun relationship between siblings and parents. The Western background adds even more to the enjoyment. Despite being fifty years old or more they tackle important societal topics along with exploring the meaning of family.
I eagerly binge The Big Valley, Bonanza, High Chaparral, The Rifleman, Maverick, Davy Crockett, and The Virginian. My latest series is all about Western family as well.
I’d like to introduce you to the Lazy M Ranch. Several of you have heard this tale. If so, use this minute to go fill up your coffee cups.
This series got its start when a friend (debut Love Inspired author Deborah Clack) sent me a card with a group of cowboys on the front. I wrote to the artist, Sherry Peters, who is the photographer behind Bradbury Lane https://sherrypphotography.com/. Sherry sent me a wall print of the cowboys. Thus, the Lazy M Ranch was born.
Meet brothers Drew, Sam, Trevor, and Luke, along with Grampa Gus Morgan who manage the Lazy M Ranch in Homestead Pass, Oklahoma. There’s another character in there who is introduced in my upcoming release, young Cole.
For you Okies here today, Homestead Pass is thirty minutes East of Elk City and two hours from Oklahoma City. I set my stories in Oklahoma as I had the pleasure of living there for seventeen years. And for those who go way back, I used to work at City of Faith Hospital in Tulsa.
I digress. This series chronicles the path these reluctant cowboys take to find love and the future the good Lord has planned for them.
My February release is Trevor’s story. It’s also my 19th book with Love Inspired. I’m very excited about The Cowboy’s Secret Past as it’s a twist on the secret baby trope. I can’t tell you the twist or I’d give away the fun.
Here’s the blurb. Didn’t they do a fabulous job on this cover?
He’s not the same man he was
But maybe now he’s ready to be a father
Since leaving his wild rodeo days behind, rancher Trevor Morgan has sobered up and built a faith-filled life. So he’s shocked when the woman caring for his grandfather intrudes on that solitude. Nurse Hope Burke has hidden motives for coming to the Lazy M Ranch—she believes Trevor is the father of her orphaned nephew. Can a loving aunt and a wary cowboy change a little boy’s life forever?

The Cowboy’s Secret Past is a standalone book. Here’s a quick peek inside.
“Mind if I join you?”
Hope blinked and nearly fell over at the sound of Trevor Morgan’s voice. Heart hammering as though she’d been caught doing something illegal, she scrambled to shove Cole’s birth certificate back into her purse.
“Sure,” she said on a shaky breath. Hope met his gaze and glanced away. He wasn’t wearing a Stetson today. His hair was the color of warm caramel, with thick unruly waves.
She could see why Anna was attracted to him. And it was a good thing that she was nothing like her stepsister. She had zero interest in rodeos or cowboys. And she definitely would never get involved with an emotionally unavailable man like this one. Trevor Morgan was a complication she could do without.
Today, I brought two fun giveaway for readers. Due to postage costs, this giveaway is US addresses only.
One reader will take home a print copy of The Cowboy’s Secret Past and a fun Book Lover tote.
One reader will take home the first three books in the series (print), The Baby Inheritance, The Cowboy Bargain and The Cowboy’s Secret Past.
To be entered, simply leave a comment letting me know about your favorite family Westerns. They can be vintage or modern television shows or movies.

I love When Calls the Heart. Set in Western Canada.
denise
I loved RIDE until HC canceled it. I may have a second chance on the CW.
Ride? Must go look it up. Thanks, Denise.
Hello, early bird. I have not watched it, but I imagine it will be easy to BINGE the reruns.
More like night owl, friend. 😉
I used to like Bonanza and Walker, Texas Ranger.
I also have watched When Calls The Heart. My dad watches reruns of those old Westerns you mentioned earlier in the post.
Yeah, I love when I can watch several back to back.
Welcome back Tina! My husband and I still watch reruns of the westerns and movies! And we like Wells Fargo, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Rawhide, and Laramie! I know they weren’t really “family” oriented, as those you listed, but they usually had some sort of family in them. As far as The Big Valley, I always had a crush on Nick. Most of my friends went with Heath. I guess Nick’s character was filled with more emotion! LOL
Your books sound wonderful! Much success to you!
I liked Nick too. ???
Those were supposed to be hearts. Trying again manually <3 <3
I loved that show!
Dallas the first one.
Yes, the first Dallas was really good.
Good morning Tina. Your new book sounds amazing. I truly love your writing style and your characters warm my heart, their love of the Lord and living life to please him is what sets you apart from others. Congrats on your 19th book. Enjoy your time here. Love and hugs, my sweet friend.
Oh I forgot to say, I love Gunsmoke and growing up I was a huge Fury fan.
Tonya! Sending hugs. Thank you for the kind words.
I have watched a little of When Calls the Heart and Yellowstone. When I was in high school my grandma got me hooked on reading Larry McMurtry books like Lonesome Dove.
Congrats on your 19th LI book! I watch reruns of the old western movies (3:10 to Yuma is my favorite); and one of the shows I watched was Stoney Burke. Do you remember that show?
I too love to watch all the old ones and now Heartland is a favorite!!
Good morning, Tina! Congratulations on your 19th LI release! Yes, that’s a great cover. Can’t wait to read The Cowboy’s Secret Past. I love those old westerns you mentioned (and old John Wayne movies). I had the pleasure of meeting James Drury (The Virginian) more than 20 years ago. He was a really nice guy.
Laura!!! Good to see you. Connie Queen is a huge James Drury fan too.
My Friend Flicka, Fury, Rin Tin Tin, Sky King, the Rifleman, Gunsmoke – weren’t they the best! Oh and the Roy Rogers and Dale Evans show. What a journey down memory lane. Thank you for sharing time with us today.
Hi Kathy! When I lived in Colorado, Roy and Dale’s daughter and her family went to my church. I was star-struck.
We never watched TV/movies growing up, but we did have lots of Louis L’Amour and Zane Grey books! And my brother loves listening to the old radio shows of Gunsmoke. 😀
Good reading choices!!! When I was in the army we listened to a ton of radio shows. Thanks for stopping by Elizabeth.
I always enjoyed Bonanza and still watch it sometimes. I also enjoy Longmire was one of my favorites. We use to watch them all when I was growing up. My dad always read a lot of westerns so I think that is why I love them now.
Oh, yes. How could I forget Longmire. Love it. thanks for visiting today.
Hi Tina, good to see you in a different venue and congratulations on your new series. For vintage Westerns I always liked Bonanza. With three sons and a dad, they never ran out of story ideas, which is probably why it lasted so long. I also loved “Gunsmoke” — the main characters were single, but Matt, Kitty, Doc and Chester/Festus formed a little family of their own and I loved their loyalty to each other. For contemporary I liked the Canadian series “Heartland,” until they killed Ty off. I went on this whole Western binge during COVID. There is nothing like them.
Hi, Kathy! Good to see you too. I watched a lot of Heartland too. Great show. And yes, I think Bonanza was the precursor to all our modern western books. Never thought of it like that but you are so right. Thanks for stopping by.
John Wayne’s movies. They were my late Grandfather favorite actor and he would watch nothing but John Wayne movies. I remember growing up and I would sit with my Grandfather and watch John Wayne…
Kim! My birthday twin. Good to see you. What wonderful memories you must have.
My favorites were The Big Valley, and Maverick . I also enjoyed Gunsmoke, Bonanza,, and Have Gun Will Travel.
I loved all those shows. Maverick was a favorite. Have Gun Will Travel really was ahead of its time. Thanks for visiting KariJean.
I love all westerns: When Calls the Heart, Gunsmoke, Big Valley, etc.
I also love reading all Christian westerns!
Look who’s here!!!! I am a total western wannabe too. <3
I like most westerns. I enjoyed Iron Horse.
I grew up on reruns of Bonanza, the Big Valley, and the Rifleman.
What I liked that they all had in common was how the family always stuck together. Even if the siblings were fighting among themselves, they were protective of each other against outsiders.
That’s right. The same is true of the Morgan Brothers!!
A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity. Proverbs 17:17 King James
Our family always watched Gunsmoke because my Mother went to school with Ken Curtis, the person who played Festus. Anytime he was in the Phoenix area, he would contact my Mother and they would visit.
Joye, that is so cool. I’m actually in Northern Arizona.
My daughter and I are watching Big Valley, we’re in season 4. We love that family. My newest Western that I discovered through my FIL, my daughter watched it with him is Laramie. I love the first seasons where it is about Slim and Andy (with Jonesy and Jess) and then the rest when they “adopt” Mike and Miss Daisy. I bought all the seasons of it and I have all of The Big Valley.
Brilliant idea. I just checked. I can watch THE BIG VALLEY on Amazon. Thanks for the heads up, Naomi!
My favorites were the Rifleman, Gunsmoke and though it’s not a western, I loved the family dynamics of the Waltans.
Goodnight Johnboy. hehehe. Couldn’t resist Ms. Jan.
My Dad and I always watched westerns together. That started my love of them. We watched every John Wayne westerns, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, Rifleman, Maverick, Roy Rogers, The Lone Ranger. Bonaza, Wells Fargo and The Big Valley all come to mind.
Ah, memories you will have forever. Thanks for visiting, Becki.
thanks for being here today. I loved all the shows you mentioned as well as Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, John Wayne, The Lone Ranger, When Calls The Heart, and so many more. I grew up on a farm and there were a lot of live cowboys/Cowmen that were a big part of our “community”. So many role models we had to follow. Especially for my three brothers. April and I looked up a lot to these men but also the women.
Dr. Quinn. I forgot about her!!!!
Some of my favorite growing up that come to mind are:
Rawhide
The Riffleman
Wagon Train
Wanted Dead or Alive
Thank you for the chance to win some fabulous giveaways!
Love your books!
Growing up the in the 50’s we would watch westerns. I enjoyed them greatly. Roy Rogers, Gunsmoke, Rawhide, Bonanza, The Rifleman and Have Gun Will Travel. I still watch the old Westerns on t.v. I pine for those days. They are meaningful and give me hope.
Those shows really showed the purpose of family values. Thanks for stopping by, Anne.
I love watching the Virginian and Laramie. The When Calls the Heart series by Jeanette Oke and the Al and Joanna Lacy books are wonderful.
Me too, Barb!!!
Westerns were very popular during the time I was growing up. I watched them everyday after school and looked forward to the characters, and acting as well as the locales depicted. I was entranced. The earliest were The Rifleman, Gunsmoke, Roy Rogers, Have Gun Will Travel, Rawhide, and Lone Ranger. Whenever I feel lost or sad I watch them at night and feel better.
What a perfect answer, Sharon. It is like going home.
Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman was a favorite of mine…
I need to go watch the reruns. Thanks for stopping by, Colleen.
Hi Tina, my daddy loved Westerns so I’ve watched them all of my life. I’m currently on a “Wagon Train” binge. I saw them many years ago but I’m enjoying them more the second, third, or even fourth time around! I find myself amazed by the number of movie stars from the 40s and 50s who showed up for a trip to California! I also marvel at the strength and determination of the real pioneers who chose to pursue their dreams!
Thanks, Tina, for giving us contemporary Western families to bond with in these unsettling times!
Good memories, Connie! Thanks for the sweet words!<3
no fav
Thanks for stopping by!
Works using cellular. Not WiFi.
I loved all those old western including the ones that came in on Saturday mornings!
Loved the night times ones too! Bonanza, Gunsmoke and Rawhide!
Saturday morning Westerns!!!! The good old days.
Oh . . probably The Apple Dumping Gang
Adorable movie. Writing this one down too!
I always like Dallas and Bonanza . Of course any Western show was on at our house when I was growing up..so I watched them all. I also like Yellowstone.
I agree, Jackie. They’re all good. Thanks for stopping by.
My favorite western is Bonanza. My husband and I love to watch this show.
Hi, Tina. I love My Friend Flicka and Bonanza. Thank you.
My Friend Flicka! That’s a trip down memory lane!
I liked watching Davy Crockett with my brother when we were kids. Thanks.
Carla
What a trip down Memory Lane! I remember so many of these shows. The first thing that popped into my mind was Maverick. I also liked Davy Crockett, Roy Rogers, and The Lone Ranger.
Big Valley was a favorite!! but loved many
Thanks for visiting, Jackie!
Hello Tina, I am a fan of all the old movies Bonanza was always one of my favorites and The Rifleman too!
Bonanza fans unite!!!
I like Tombstone.
Tombstone!!!!! A very complex show. Thanks for popping in, Rene!
I’m not a huge fan of tv or movies, but once in a while I’ll watch one. The last one was True Grit & it was okay… about what I expected. I prefer books as they let my imagination paint the pictures!
Books are always the best!
I liked all the westerns that came on TV while I was growing up, Rawhide, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, The Rifleman, Maverick, Wagon Train, Wanted Dead or Alive, Wyatt Earp, etc.
I forgot about Wyatt Earp! Now I have that theme song stuck in my head!
I love your Lazy M Ranch series! Those Morgan brothers are my kind of heroes. My husband and I binge on The Big Valley, Bonanza and Wild West….plus Dallas was quite a family saga. Congratulations on the release of The Cowboy’s Secret Past….love the cover!
I love Jim and Artemis!!!! Thanks for stopping by, my friend! <3
Hello and welcome Tina. I love Rifleman, Bonanza, Daniel Boone, Laramie, alot of the western movies with John Wayne, The Big Valley , Gunsmoke, Have Gun Will Travel, Wagon Train, and all the old Westerns. I also loved watching 1883. I grew up watching westerns with my dad and I loved them all, I know I am missing some of them but for now, I am remembering these. Thank you for the chance. Have a Great weekend.
Thank YOU for stopping by. I haven’t seen 1883 and I need to!
I enjoyed watching many of those old Western TV shows at my grandfather’s since he was such a big fan. My favorite was Bonanza. However, my personal favorite was How the West Was Won.
Oh golly! How the West was Won! So many stars!! Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Gregory Peck and on and on. Adding this to my list. Thanks for the reminder!
F troop! Liked Lou Diamond Phillips mysteries and Longmire.
Good choices! Ironically, my company in the Army was called F-Troop!!
I used to enjoyed watching some westerns with my family when I was younger. Gunsmoke, and Alias Smith and Jones were my favorites.
Ahhhhh! I forgot about Alias Smith and Jones! Funny show!
I grew up watching westerns! The Guns of Will Sonnett, Lancer, Wagon Train, Big Valley, Bonanza, Gunsmoke, High Chaparral, The Virginian, Daniel Boone, were all favorites. I still watch reruns of Wagon Train, Gunsmoke, Big Valley, Rawhide (which I never saw as a child, before my time), Wanted Dead or Alive (also never saw as a child). And, of course, I have to watch westerns with Sam Elliott!!!!!
Swoon! Anything with Sam Elliott! I’m with you, Trudy!??
Also those question marks were supposed to be <3
I watch Heartland, Ride, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, and Walker Texas Ranger to name a few.
Apparently everyone has seen Ride but me! Must remedy that! Thanks for popping in, Joannie!
As far as newer westerns, I loved RIDE also and a very sad they dropped the story, although I heard it is supposed to be picked up by a streaming service, which I do not recall the name of. I Love WCTH filmed in Canada. I also miss the Nashville series which has never been mentioned again. It was quite a mixed up family, trying to hide their illegal doings, including murder. It was GOOD! There are so many westerns I have read about, but no names come to mind at the present. Your book sounds like something I want to get into as it expresses the family dynamics so well.
I found it! Ride is on the Hallmark Channel! Thanks for visiting, Judy!!
Congratulations on your 19th LI release! I like When Calls the Heart.
Thank you! Good choice! Thanks for stopping by. BTW my heroine in Christmas with the Cowboy is Emma!!
I like all the oldies. Gun smoke, Bonanza, the Rifleman, Lonesome Dove…
I’m actually from Oklahoma. I live in Texas now, but I was born in Claremore, Oklahoma. If you lived in Tulsa you would know where that is.
My favorite western is Bonanza and even though it is not a western I love Little House On The Prairie.
I do know where that is! We’re two former Okies!!
My favorite the Rifleman and Bonanza
There’s a special place in my heart for Lucas and Mark McCain!
Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, Heartland and the Love Comes Softly movies are favorites of mine
You have excellent taste, Bethann 🙂
Some of my favorites are Bonanza, Big Valley, Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and Walker Texas Ranger.
Five stars for Walker, Texas Ranger!!!
Thanks for stopping by, Cherie.
Bonanza
Great choice! Thanks for stopping by!
I like When Calls The Heart and Yellowstone…
Hi, Rita! Thanks for taking time to visit!
I remember westerns from my childhood like Roy Roger’s, Fury, My Friend Flicka, and more. I love horses and watched westerns for that reason. Now we watch Rifleman almost every day.
You’re right! Great shows, Carolyn!
I miss Bonanza, Wagon Train, Rawhide ( am I dating myself?) And Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Gene Autry were must watch.
More recently, John Wayne, Tom Selleck.
Yes! I forgot about that Louis L’Amour Westerns Selleck did. And Quigley Fown Under! 3
Loved The Big Valley!!!
Me too! Great show, Jennifer!
I love the print and can see how it inspired your series. The new book sounds like a good story.
The first family western I really liked was The Rifleman. It was such a good representation of a strong relationship between a widowed father and young son. My other favorite family western is Bonanza. Again a widowed father and his sons. Three very different sons from three mothers. The responsible, sensible oldest, Adam, I could relate to. I had a crush on Little Joe (I think many high school girls did) and really liked Hoss. Hoss was the gentle giant of the show. Ben Cartwright, the father, was the solid figure that kept his sons on track, ran the ranch, and was an important figure in the community. I don’t think I missed a single episode.
Thank you, Patricia! I agree with you!
Showing my age, but I liked the Sky King family.
That was an oldie but goodie!!!
I loved Little House on the Prairie series. I also enjoyed the Love Comes Softly series. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you.
I had a crush on Almanzo back then 🙂
Thank you to everyone for spending the day with me! <3
My absolute favorite is Heartland!
I loved Big Valley. You talking about it makes me want to go rewatch it.
