Headwear of Yesterday and Today

My subject today is hats. I love hats and wish I didn’t look so awful in them. My daddy always wore a fedora everywhere he went and I really thought it made him look very nice. My grandpa wore fedoras also and that probably where my dad got it from. These days a lot of women are wearing them and they look so cute.

Stetsons always give cowboys added appeal. There’s just something about a man in a Stetson that makes my heart beat a little faster. Doesn’t matter how old I am and as long as I have eyes I’ll keep looking. I have a dear friend who always wears a Stetson and drives a pickup. Let me tell you, he looks sharp.

Hats were a must for women back in the day. They never left home without one and the hats were really pretty with flowers and feathers adorning them. Some even had a bird decoration perched amid the netting and flowers. I wish women still wore them. They’re so feminine.

In ONE SHOT AT LOVE, Dax Talon drives into Panther Creek, Colorado in a Model T car wearing a fedora. He does that because he knows how hard it is to be accepted in a small mountain community in 1939. They shoot strangers. Once he meets some of the people and gets lodging in a rooming house, he switches to his Stetson and Mariah really loves the way the hat adds to his handsome features. How could she not fall in love with him?

Especially since I picture him as a younger Tim McGraw! By the way, this is Warren Beatty in the fedora.

The female on the cover of this book wears a wide hat with a large pink flower in the center. The hat is a little out of fashion but Mariah doesn’t care. It belonged to her mother and it makes her feel pretty. Besides, she doesn’t get many opportunities to wear it. Her parents have both passed on and she’s left to raise her two siblings. It’s nothing she chooses but she’ll keep them together and safe no matter what.

Life is hard on the mountain with moonshiners taking over after the gold mine shut down. She doesn’t go anywhere without her rifle.

Then the legendary pink pistol comes into her possession and brings hope. She finally begins to believe that just possibly she can find love.

I really enjoyed writing this story, the Pink Pistol Sisterhood book #7 in the series. This is a novella so it’s short, but I’m very happy and proud to be a part of this Petticoats and Pistols’ fun project.

ONE SHOT AT LOVE will be out on May 30th. It’s available now for Preorder.

Click HERE for the Amazon link for the series page.

We also have four FREE Pink Pistol magazines with first chapters of each story, recipes, games, and lots more.

My Question – What do you think of hats in general and do you know anyone who wears a hat of any kind?

Since I don’t have the book yet, I’m giving away two $10 Amazon Gift Cards.

    • Hi Denise, I hear you. My hair and hats don’t get along. I envy girls who can wear them with style. My mother wasn’t a hat person either but she made sure my dad had his fedora. Thanks for coming.

  1. I love a good hat, but never thought the pill box hats my mother wore were good looking. I guess I like functional hats. I remember my mother always wanting my ball caps to have the bill up toward the sky and I said that the point was to keep the Sun out of my eyes and not to just sit there looking pretty.

    • How funny, David. I’ve seen ball caps worn a lot of ways – some turned backward. Now, that sure wouldn’t keep the sun out of your eyes! Glad you stopped by.

    • Wonderful, Rhonda! Maybe hats are coming back around. Sure hope so. A lot of actors wear hats. I remember Telly Savalas back in the day wore a fedora over his bald head. So does Sean Connery. Johnny Depp always has a hat on. Those just popped into my head. Have a beautiful day, Rhonda.

  2. My great-grandmother left her antique photograph album to me. She’s wearing a hat in most of them. Some are quite humorous. And the men in the photos are also wearing felt hats and ball caps. I also have her hatpins. I enjoyed your post!

    • What a treasure those photos must be, Karen. Hats were definitely the thing for women back in the day. The hat was what drew me to the cover of One Shot at Love. Hold on to the hat pins. You might get to use them one day when wearing hats becomes the rage! I just love a man in a hat. Glad you came over and enjoyed my post.

  3. I love hats. I wear the floppy hats when fishing or in the boat. Or either a visor cap. My husband wears a cap everyday. And he likes those wide brim sun bucket hats with the pointed front top. It keeps most of his face covered when bass fishing. If he is working on the line(he is a general foreman power lineman), it’s a hard hat. Of course the cowboys are sexy with their Stetsons. But, I think those linemen with their hard hats working the line are too! Heh.

Can’t wait to read your Pink Pistol story! I’m enjoying the series. Thanks for your post!

    • Tracy, I agree. Hats just do something for a man, doesn’t matter what kind. And us ladies have to keep the sun off our faces too. Those sunburns hurt. My sister and I were talking about our dad last night. In one of the pictures, he was wearing a fedora fishing. It must’ve been an old one but still it was funny.

I’m really thrilled that you’re liking the Pink Pistol Sisterhood series. We’re having fun with that, reading each other’s stories. Each one is so different. Have a lovely day.

  4. I think hats looks very nice on some ladies, but it’s not something I would wear. I don’t recall my grandmother or mother ever wearing a hat. My daughter-in-law occasionally wears a ball cap.

    • Scaredsilly, I’m happy my hat post drew you. Some women are just made to wear hats. Then there’s us. Darn it! I’m tempted to buy a fedora and just wear it around my apartment. 🙂 My grandmother wore one and she looked really pretty in it. Nice to have our pictures. Glad you came.

  5. I love hats, but they make my head itch, so I don’t wear them often. The black ladies in my area still wear them to church.

    • Hi Janice, those black ladies sure do like their hats and I love that. They probably don’t feel dressed without a hat on. Too bad you can’t wear a hat. Thanks for coming.

  6. I’m like you – I just don’t think hats look good on me. My dad always wore a hat or cap of some kind.

I agree with the cowboys and their Stetsons. Oh, be still, my heart! Good luck with the book!

  7. I have thick, curly, unruly hair, so hats don’t look good on me. My hair is shoulder length, so I end up with a lot of puff coming out of the bottom. I do try to wear a sun hat at the beach, though.

  8. My mom always wore a hat to church, even in her 80s. But my sister and hubby are the reason some hats have labels saying ” one size fits most (not all) asthey both have large heads.

    • Kate, bless your mom. Bet she looked real nice in those hats. Too bad about your sister and hubby. I won’t say they have the big head. Always good to see you.

  9. My father wore a fedora during the fall and winter and this was when men dressed for work. I thought that this was very flattering and all the men during that era wore fedoras. The men and women dressed up when they went out to dinner and the movies and wore hats. I loved that period of time. I have many black and white photos of my parents when they were wearing hats. My father had a fishing cap too and I saved it. Miss those days and that lovely fashion but the hats were worn for comfort when it was cold.

    • Anne, I miss the days when men dressed for work in a bank or office working with the public. I remember when women and men dressed up to fly on an airplane. Those days had style and people were kinder to each other. Now they wear shorts to church and far less on an airplane. I’m happy you came to hang out.

  10. I would love to wear a hat, especially to church or a wedding. But hats and I don’t get along. I have a small head and hats are just never the right size. Now that the fascinators have come about I think I could wear these.

    • Kathleen, many women bemoan that fact. I don’t think I could stand a fascinator perching on the side of my head. I say go for it! Thanks for coming.

  11. I grew up wearing straw cowboy hats while showing western pleasure horses! Hubs farms full time so the farmers caps are everywhere in the house – you know they NEVER turn down a free hat!! I loved reading this ARC and this whole series is just a blast to read!

    • Boy, you said a mouthful, Teresa! Farmers do have tons of hats of every color. People are always giving them hats. I’m so happy you’re liking this series. I do there is a great selection of stories. Doing it was so much fun. Love and hugs.

  12. I normally don’t wear hats unless I’m going to be out in the sun all day (have really thin hair and have had sun-burned my scalp). My ex-husband almost always wears a hat.

    • I’m sure a hat is a necessity for you, Karijean. I’m so sorry. I wish I could give you some of my hair. I have very thick hair. Love and hugs.

  13. Hats are beautiful and useful but I don’t like wearing them. Thanks for the chance to win a prize.

    • Vickie, thank you so much for coming. It’s funny how the British love their hats and American’s can’t stand them. I used to love looking at Sophia Loren in her Italian hats. She was so beautiful and had such flair. Blessings to you on this beautiful day.

  14. Hats can be very stylish, but they just don’t look good on me. I enjoy seeing Kate Middleton’s stylish Fascinator hats. Everything seems to look good on her.

  15. I love hats and so enjoy seeing all the outlandish hats worn during the Kentucky Derby. My mom wore hats when she was younger but not in her 30’s. Back in 1967 it was almost a necessity to wear a hat to a funeral so I bought one for my mom’s funeral. I personally do not wear hats as it messes up my hair since I keep it short all the time. Such vanity, the bane of my existence. Have a blessed day and this book sound so very intriguing. I look forward to reading it.

    • Judy, those hats at the Kentucky Derby were fun to look at, but like you said, some were really outlandish. I’m glad you wore a hat to your mom’s funeral. She would’ve smiled. My hair is short too but I’m about ready to buy me a fedora. I think I could wear that. I’m glad you’re liking the premise of One Shot at Love and hope you get to read it soon. Love and hugs.

  16. I like hats. I live in Arizona and a lot of people wear hats in the summer to keep the hot sun off their heads.

I think men wear more hats than women year round, especially baseball cap types.

  17. welcome today. Oh I love hats. My mom always wore hats and I fell in love with the look of them and helping her put decorations on plain hats she would buy. Growing up every sunday we would wear a hat to church. My youngest sister wouldnt let them stay on her head. NO WAY. So mom and I had a lot of fun with them. When I got married, my new husband would endulge me with new hats or a gift card where I could get a new hat. At 64 I still love to wear them. To church, in the garden, grocery store, etc. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net

    • Aha, finally a hat wearer, Lori! I love that you continue to wear them. Bless your hubby for making sure you have a new one occasionally. He must love them on you. 🙂 🙂 🙂

  18. I love the idea of hats. And I’m constantly trying them on. But I just hate wearing them.

Can’t wait for your next book.

    • Alisa, I do the same thing. I love trying hats on just to see how I look, hoping one flatters me. It doesn’t. I hope you enjoy One Shot at Love when it releases May 30th. Love you, lady.

  19. Hello Linda! I’m a little late with this but wanted to check in and say hi. I love hats – on anybody but me. When we were in high school my (future) husband’s family had a side business of horse farm/boarding/training so he had the boots, the jeans and the hat. He looked pretty cute, especially when competing in horse shows. Didn’t often wear those clothes to school, though, because he would get odd looks. Many years ago two of the long-time church ladies displayed their collections and invited others to a hat show. My little granddaughter was absolutely fascinated with all the different styles. Take care. Mariah’s story sounds like another good one. xo Sally

    • Sally, I’m sure your husband turned a lot of girl’s heads. And invited bullying at school. I can see why he didn’t wear them to class. I’ll bet those two church ladies got a lot of compliments on their hat collections. Maybe one day I’ll find a hat style that looks good on me and I hope you do too. Hope you like One Shot at Love.

  20. I think hats look good on some people, but not on me. I especially think a hat looks good on a cowboy. My husband and son both wear a hat everyday. They wear a baseball type hat that usually has some advertisement on it like a parts store or tractor supply store.

    • But, Colleen, you live in Arizona! It’s so hot there the sun can fry an egg on the sidewalk. I’m glad to see your name pop up. Love you, lady.

  21. I used to wear hats all the time. My husband wears one every day and my papaw used to wear a fedora.

  22. I wear big sun hats all the time when I’m outside! But rarely hats just for fashion…I wish I was a hat person! Hats are fun!

  23. Hi Linda, I think hats are very nice, but I just don’t wear hats. I wore one about a month ago because I was outside painting, but as far as just wearing a hat because , well I don’t. My husband will wear a hat, or a cap most of the time, especially if we are out in the sun. Your book sounds like a great read and I love love the cover! Thank you for sharing about it. Have a great afternoon and a great week. God bless you and your family.

    • I’m glad you stopped by, Alicia. And thanks for the compliment about my book cover. I think it’s so beautiful. Our own lovely Shanna Hatfield designed it and most of the Pink Pistol series ones. Blessings and love, dear friend.

  24. I wear a ball cap to work outside on our farm, but I don’t think I look great in hats. 🙂 Two of my great-uncles on my mom’s side would always wear cowboy hats.

  25. If my eyes need protection from the sun, I wear a baseball cap. I just have to make sure I put my hair in a low ponytail first.

I did own a cowboy hat. It used to be that hats wouldn’t stay on my head because my hair was… too voluminous. I had a lot of hair and it would push the hat up and off my head.

    • Maryellen, I used to wear a cowboy hat too back when I was a lot younger. That was when Urban Cowboy was all the rage and everyone wanted a hat…and to ride a mechanical bull. I did both. The bull was fun. I didn’t hurt myself. The crazy things we do. Thanks for coming.

  26. Long ago in the olden days my parents wore hats and they dressed smartly. This was a norm then and it was wonderful to see them go out for the evening. The style of wearing a fedora was a a real classic at that time. I pine for that era.

    • Ruth, I pine for it too. It was a classy era for sure. Love how people dressed up to fly on an airplane or ride a train. Now they barely wear clothes. So sad. Thanks for coming.

  27. I like hats but it takes a certain lady to wear them well. I do not do justice to hats. Wish I did.

  28. I love how pretty hats look, but I don’t like how they feel on my head. I do wear a wide brimmed straw hat when gardening to keep off the sun, however! Mine has a tie down because of the constant wind where I live!

  29. Linda- I am sorry I’m late to the game today. It’s been a tough one, but hopefully I’ll get over my sickness.
I love hates on men. My dad always with word a Resistol or a cap. Never seen him without a hat except when going to bed. Another thing he believed in… no hat on the bed. Super bad cowboy luck,

Love you. Your book was phenomenal.

    • Miss Tonya, I’m so sorry you’re sick. Your dad is a cowboy so he needs to wear a hat. Those Resistols are beautiful hats. I wonder where that no hat on the bed came from? My parents both lived by that saying. I love you too, Sister Friend. Get well soon! Thank you for liking One Shot at Love. 🙂

  30. My husband always wore a Resistol or a Bailey. They have become so expensive that he has switched to wearing free ball caps. Like so many farm families we have lots of them. I like hats but I don’t like “hat hair”. I do wear a hat when working outside in summer.

  31. I know a few gentlemen who wear baseball type hats. I do not know any women. I believe it maybe something connected with location. If someone was sitting in the sun for a ball game, they maybe wearing a hat, but not everyday occurances. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you.

  32. Like you, I love hats, but they really don’t look that good on me. Our daughter instituted Friday Hat Day about 10 to 15 years ago when she was Director of Student Services at AB Tech in Asheville, NC. She left that job to go to Law School at UNC. She graduated 2 years ago and is now the director of the Foreign Students at the UNC Law School. She kept her Hat Day throughout school and is still doling it even when not at work. She has a nice collection of hats and looks very nice in them. Most are wide brimmed, some have feathers and some have flowers.

  33. When I was a very young child my mom would wear a hat for dress up occasions, as was typical then. My dad, a rancher, always wore a hat. Enjoyed all the comments about this interesting subject!

  34. I am not a huge fan of hats. I rarely wear them. I might wear a ball cap if I am going to be out for a long time in the sun on a casual occasion or a nice sunhat on a nicer occasion. My mom is not a hat person either so I think that also influenced me. My teenager daughter likes to experiment with fashion so she has actually worn hats more often than me.

  35. What an interesting post, sister. I think hats can help define personalities and I remember Daddy’s and Grandpa’s hats well. I’ve never been a hat person, but I think they look great on some people. So excited that this new book is going to be released soon! People are going to love this story!

    • Jan, I also have a picture of Uncle Luke and Uncle George with hats on. We had a lot of hat wearers in our family. Then it all changed. I think Daddy enjoyed wearing a hat. He had thin hair. Thanks for coming, Sister. Love you!

  36. Hi Linda, Loved your post on hats. My grandmother wore hats all the time. I don’t wear a lot of hats only when I’m out in the sun per dermatologist & a lot of sunscreen.
