It is fantastically hot here in Oklahoma. We’ve had several days in with temps over 100 lately with more to come.
So what better time than to chat about a Christmas book, right?
Have you ever experienced a moment of mistaken identity? Maybe you have a doppelgänger out there somewhere or maybe you look a little bit like a famous movie star. I have never been mistaken for anyone else, but I do you have a bit of an identity crisis that happens every once in a while. (Crisis might be a strong descriptor…)
It started when I was a junior or senior in high school. I would meet people and tell them my name and they would immediately say, “Oh. You’re Sean’s sister.”
My brother was/is a social butterfly and it became a running family joke that even though I was older, I would frequently get recognized as being his sister.
Fast forward twenty years, and it still happens. About three years ago, we moved into a neighborhood about half a mile from my brother. Our kids go to the same elementary school and they love being able to see their cousins in the hallway during the day (none of them are in the same grade). It wasn’t long before I started hearing from other parents, “Oh. You’re Sean’s sister.”
It used to bug me. But now I’m able to laugh about it. I am even thinking about having a T-shirt made for myself with “Sean’s sister” on it for next time we take a trip together.
The hero of my October release in the Christmas Wishes and Cowboy Kisses anthology happens to be a twin. And he gets mistaken for his brother by the one woman he never got over.
Giveaway!
I would love to give away a $10 Amazon gift card and an early copy of my novella from this anthology (ready in about two weeks via ebook). Leave me a comment and let me know whether you’ve ever been mistaken for someone else or maybe you’ve been the one who was mixed up.
Thanks for chatting today!

I haven’t been mistaken for anyone. I can’t think of anyone I’ve confused for another.
Thanks for stopping by to chat, Denise!
Good morning- I’ve had people come up and start talking to me (I’m a talker too), then they realize I’m not who they thought I was. I always laugh and tell them, “Well I’m glad we met, but I’d also like to meet who you thought I am!!!”
Congrats on your new book.
That’s lovely. I’m a talker too… I get it from my dad.
My husband and I attended a gospel meeting in a town about 15 miles away. After the service was over and we were making our way out, a man grabbed my hand and said, “Come on!” He proceeded to lead (drag) me to the door and down the steps of the church. It wasn’t until we were almost to the sidewalk that he turned to look and then turned beet red. “I’m so sorry!” he stammered. “I thought you were my daughter!” In his defense, I am quite short.
That’s too funny!
Yes I have. I’m a walker and get stopped at least 2 or 3 times a year people thinking I’m someone they know until we are face to face. Congrats on the new book.
Thank you! Appreciate you stopping in to chat.
I have had people mistake for someone. It is very strange.
🙂 Thanks for chatting today.
I can’t remember ever doing it except for my granddaughters and they are twins (see about once every year).
Twins! How fun. Have they ever tried to trick you on purpose? (They may not be old enough… or ornery enough).
Good morning, Lacy! We so appreciate you coming to chat with us today! I had the privilege of being a part of the CHRISTMAS WISHES & COWBOY KISSES promo blast last week. Wow! Such enthusiasm for this Christmas collection!!
I’m the oldest of seven, but I have a younger sister who looks like me – so they say. I can’t see it, but one year, she bought the exact same coat that I had. Pure coincidence. When she attended church, the same one I do, my own daughters thought she was me. Until they got closer to her pew, that is. LOL.
That’s such a great story. It should show up in a book–sounds like something you’d see on the page.
Not for someone else but the eyes in our family make us easy to recognize in the community!
So cool. What color?
good morning. wonderful post. thanks for sharing. yes I have mistaken others for someone else. I have also been mistaken for some one else. many times, as an adult, I was mistaken for my mother. “oh hello Pattie, I see you have died your hair” LOL mom had red hair and I had blonde, now white. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net
More and more people tell me I look like my mother. ????
I have been mistaken for someone else but mostly my sisters is who they think I am. I guess we all look enough alike that people think we are the other sister. Most of the time when they call me my sister’s name I just go along with it and let them think that is who I am.
Hello Lacy! I’ve never been mistaken for anyone but my best friend growing up that I’ve known for 50 years now looks so much like Caroline Kennedy that she gets mistaken for her all the time! People think I’m with her and that she’s famous! It’s quite funny. She actually does look a lot like her!
That must be fun and a bit funny to watch happen. I mean, unless someone starts taking photos of you!
As a teacher, I saw a student performing on the stage at a distance. I thought it was one of my students and complimented him on his singing. It wasn’t him. The incident showed me how easy it was to be mistaken.
I could totally see myself doing this.
I go between two ends of the spectrum–either people think I’m only 16, or they think I’m my mom. 😀
Thanks for chatting! Isn’t it funny how people can think we are older or younger? Take the compliment, I say!
not mistaken for anyone else
Thanks for stopping by.
Several times women have mistaken me for someone else.
Oh, I can relate to your tale!! I have three older sisters. I’ve never been mistaken for my 2nd to oldest sister, but I have been mistaken for my oldest and the one just older than me! In fact, me and my sister just older than me thought about having t-shirts made for when we were out together that would say no we’re not on the front and twins on the back!!
That reminds me of a time when someone asked me and my sister if we were twins (we are four years apart). We were pretty young. People can be so oblivious sometimes!
Rarely but it did happen to me.
Thanks for commenting. 🙂
I don’t think I have been mistaken for anyone, but like you, I have had many people say “Oh you’re Rick or Pat, Or Mike or Pete’s sister. One time when I introduced myself to someone at one of my brother’s weddings the couple said, Oh we didn’t know Pete had a sister… So, I feel your pain…lol
It’s funny to me now, but back then it really bothered me!! I’m glad to be his sister. Thanks for sharing.
You are blessed to have a friendly and outgoing brother! But, I can understand how it might feel a little awkward to be always deemed “the sister”. Not exactly mistaken for anyone but had somewhat of a funny experience doing some out of town genealogy research on my husband’s family. While visiting a local, small reference library, the lady said, oh, you must be Alvord’s cousin, as you have the same coloring. Well, no, I explained, it actually is my husband (there with me) who would be related. The gentleman in question had written a great family history book, and I was there to further investigate and make some copies.
Hi Catherine, I definitely appreciate my brother much more now than I did back then. 🙂 He’s a great dad and a good friend to have. Thanks for sharing your story.
Omgoodness, yes!! I always got called by my sister’s name, Laura, even though she was six years older than me and five inches shorter! Haha Even when I was twelve (and 5’7”), we went to a local dress shop in our little town, and the owner came up to me just gushing, “Well, Laura, how are you enjoying college, my dear?”. I said “I’m twelve, I’m her sister!”, to which I received a little pinch from my Mama, for being disrespectful! It happened at church, even. At revival, we always had “fill the pew” night. Well, all the people on my pew were our relatives that came down from So. OK. to N. TX where we lived, and they called my name as the winner! I was so excited and went down the aisle, got my prize, and man, did I get it when we got home! You see, my sister had invited about ten friends from school and they all came, and they misread her Laura as Lana! Gee! Then, years later, after my family moved to OK, and I’d been married for years, people started coming up to me and calling me by someone else’s name. It was after I had gotten a different hairstyle. I evidently had a doppelgänger!! I finally saw her and there was SOME resemblance, but not much, to me! So, yes, I’ve definitely been there, done that, as the old saying goes! Loll
That’s a lot of coincidences! I hope your sister didn’t give you too much grief. :):) Thanks for sharing.
Once I was mistaken for my mother by relatives she had not seen in years… they said I did not age much at all, LOL.
What a lovely compliment. 🙂
I get called my Aunt’s name all the time by my mom and grandparents–they say I’m a lot like her when she was my age. And I don’t mind, bc my Aunt is awesome!
That’s lovely! What a great connection to have.
My mom
I feel this. 🙂
I’ve never been mistaken for someone else, but like you I am identified as someone’s sister.
As the youngest of three the chance of moving up into the classroom one of my siblings had was a common occurrence.
The very first words my fourth grade teacher ever said to me were to ask how my brother was enjoying junior high.
In high school I was compared to my sister often. She was mostly an average student so it usually went well, but the few things she excels at I don’t. Those comparisons didn’t go well and in one case got me excused for a required-for-graduation class.
Oh no! Those siblings can sure leave a legacy, can’t they? This has happened with my kids a couple of times but mostly good so far! Thanks for chatting.
In Junior High a lot of my friends kept telling me there was a girl who looked like me. When we finally met neither of us thought we looked alike.
Similar to you being “Sean’s sister”, when one of my cousins would introduce me to people who knew my father she would tell them I was “little Harry”. At first I was confused, because my brother was named after our father, and I would say, “ no, my brother is little Harry”.
Lacy, thank you for visiting on the spur of the moment. We’re thrilled to have you. I’ve written a book about twin brothers and had a lot of fun. No one could ever guess which was which. I’ve been mistaken for the actress Sandy Duncan which seemed odd to me because I don’t think we look anything alike. Wishing you tons of success with your Christmas anthology.
Years ago I realized I must have a doppelganger in our (fairly large) city. I had multiple friends comment about seeing me a few days ago at a local store or restaurant, but it was never me. This happened several times over a few months and then stopped so I guess my “twin” moved away!
One time at a restaurant someone came up to me and called me by someone else’s name. When I said I wasn’t that person they apologized and said “You look just like her”. It was kind of weird, but interesting.
Not so much mistaken but I’ve had a lot of those you look just your Dad and You are your mother’s twin.
And a lot of people can’t remember my name. I’ve been called T-Anna, Kia, one of my favorites is “your name starts with an H right?” From a gal named Mia.
😉
Actually, just recently a week or two ago in the grocery store I had a woman stop me and ask me if I was a certain person when I said no I wasn’t her she told me of how much I looked like her. Also looked like my late grandmother
I have never been mistaken for someone but I have had the comment from people who know are extended family that I look like a “Brownrigg”!
I have been mistaken for someone else several times but never the same person. More odd to me is the fact that I have been called Debbie by many people. None of the people or situations, even the same part of the country are the same.
I have seen this anthology mentioned and love the cover. Anthologies are favorites, so I will be seriously looking at this one. Your story sounds like it will be enjoyable. Confusion and misidentification can lead to interesting situations.
One time one of my daughters school mates mistook me for another lady. He told me I saw you at the dance and you were really having a good time and you were drinking pretty much! I told him, no it wasn’t me and it Was Not me, I don’t go to parties by myself and I sure as not over drink thats for sure, its more fun to watch the people that have been drinking and acting silly instead that was kind of funny, especially now , maybe not at the time , but I did set him straight, it wasn’t me, that was many many years ago. Have a great weekend and stay safe.
Yes I have been someone had thought I was my cousin and started talking to me then said oh you are not who I thought you were it was so funny I said nope that is my cousin!
Thank you so much for sharing. Yes, I have been mixed up with someone else. When I was a child, I was able to go to Girl Scout camp for a week. When we arrived, we were told by a friend that there was another girl in the camp at the same time that looked like me. She was going to be in a different group. There were times that week that even though we were not in the same group, I was mistaken for her. I was one who always did what was asked and expected. I hate to say, but she was not. Our friend who was the caretaker of the camp had to step in a few times to get me out of hot water for things she did. God bless you.
That is an easy yes! I am an identical twin, so I have been mistaken for my twin often.
I have never been mistaken for someone else, but I have almost mistaken someone else a few times that required a second (or third) look. By the way, I love Christmas anthologies, and your story sounds fun!
Just other day I was in a convenient store standing in line for the cashier, when a person next to me said they thought I looked familiar to them but they didn’t know from where. They mentioned a ball park, but I never go there, so I must just look like someone they had seen.
I have an old classmate who always called me Sally Field when he saw me. I of coarse don’t look like her but he said to him I did. Even today he will call me Sally. I just go with the flow.
Yes I have. CHRISTMAS WISHES AND COWBOY KISSES sounds very good.
Yes this happened to me in the grocery store. A woman came over to me and said I look exactly like her friend.
