Merry Christmas from Jeannie Watt

Do you remember Woolworth’s Stores? When my mom was a very young mother, she visited the Woolworth’s in Spokane, Washington to Christmas shop and she saw these very cute stockings with names spelled out in sequins. She could not work the cost of a custom-made stocking for her baby daughter–me–into her meager Christmas budget, but she was able to purchase a less expensive stocking and sequins and make her own. She did the same when my brother was born.

My stocking has hung every Christmas since 1957. It’s getting a little tattered, and truth be told, it isn’t often filled, but every now and again I find a thoughtful bauble in the toe. The last was a beautiful garnet ring. It did, however, always get stuffed to the brim when I was a kid and loved emptying it.

I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday, filled with lovely moments which will become equally lovely memories.

Merry Christmas!

Jeannie

  1. My family had the same knit red and white Christmas stockings all through the years. I still have mine. My daughter-in-law bought new stockings every year for her girls until this year. It seemed strange to me to have so many stockings.

  2. My son has a stocking that my best friend made him when he was a baby. He is 32 now and I still hang that stocking and stuff it every year. It is a cross stitch one and its starting to show its ware.

  3. stocking. Special Christmas! Christmas stockings have been a part of Christmas since I got married in the early 70s, not so much as a child. Watching my 5 children emptying their personalized stockings Christmas Day was always a joy.

  4. Such a beautiful memory to have. My mother has been gone for so many years I have few memories of her at Christmas. She passed in 1967. All one has at my age is memories as we all live too many miles apart. GOD bless you on this celebration of Our Savior’s birth.

  5. Our girls each had a felt stocking my husband’s mom made for them. When we added son-in-laws and grandchildren I made stockings for them. They all still get hung and the kids have added stockings for their cats and dog. Well worn, yes, but full of memories.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all!

  6. Hi, what a Beautiful memory for you and you still have the stocking. I made our 2 now grown adult childrens stockings, Our daughter will be 44 in April so her stocking is that old and our son’s Stocking , I finished when he was maybe 5 yrs old. I have also made our 3 grandchildren’s stockings , my son in laws and my son’s girlfriends stocking. I love filling them up every year for them. May you and your family have a Very Merry and Blessed Christmas.

  7. Jeannie, I remember Woolworth’s! And you and I share a birthday year, 1957! I had two older sisters when I was born, who were 10 and 12. They made me a stocking–well, decorated it like your mom did for you. Mom bought a velveteen stocking and they put sequins and such on it to decorate it. I still have it somewhere packed away. I think most everything they decorated it with has fallen off through the years, but I will never get rid of that stocking! MERRY CHRISTMAS!

  8. I remember Woolworth’s. My mom made stockings for my brother and I when we were little including for the dog we had. Merry Christmas!

  9. I hadn’t thought of Woolworths in ages. I remember doing my Christmas shopping there in the 50’s. It was amazing how far $1 would go back then. Of course, it took me forever to save that much. I remember taking my grandmother there one day and buying ice cream sundaes for us both. That took my summer savings that year. Thank you for bringing back good memories.

I hope you and yours had a joyous Christmas filled with good memories and the making of many more.
