It’s been a while since I’ve had a full-length story out and so I’m really happy to have this one from three years ago included with five other excellent authors, including one of our former fillies, Tracy Garrett, as well as Kaye Spencer, Agnes Alexander, Becky Lower, and Patti Sherry-Crews.

What’s the biggest “life gamble” you’ve ever taken? How did it turn out–as you expected, or not? Mine was probably having to move to West Virginia from Oklahoma the summer just before my senior year in high school. I was not a happy camper–but look what came of it! I met my husband there in West Virginia–and that would never have happened if my dad hadn’t been transferred right then. So although it was a “forced” chance, it was one I made the best of, and learned from, and eventually enjoyed even thought I missed my Oklahoma home and friends. What’s the biggest gamble YOU ever took? Life is a series of risks, some more than others. Lol
Denise, I think NOTHING made me more nervous than to quit a job (or be fired from one!) and not have another one lined up. My dad was an alcoholic, and uncertainty makes me very stressed. Yes, so true–lots of risks in our lives!

Congratulations on your new book! One of the biggest challenges I had to face was when I was a little kid and we moved from New York to Texas. I was always shy and the move made me even more shy. Another was the time I left my ex.
Janine, I relate. I was shy in many ways when I was younger, and I guess my parents, trying to do the right thing, put me in piano and dance lessons to try to “bring me out of it” –I despised dance lessons more than anything. After a few years my mom relented and let me quit, probably because piano practice was taking up so much of my time by then. Piano was a different story altogether. I had a taskmaster piano teacher! LOL And performance was everything. And PRACTICE was everything. We had three recitals every year and at least three contests every year to get ready for and go to. So…I don’t think I ever “got over” being shy, I just really hated performing. I was in a band later on in life and guess what…I STILL wasn’t “over it”! I felt sick every time we went on stage.
And good for you for leaving your ex and getting out of a bad situation! That took a lot of guts!
Even feeling sick from being on stage, at last you got up there. I don’t know if I could have gone that far.
In a way I guess all those years of piano recitals and competitions prepared me for when I DID have to get up on stage and perform. All my life, everyone said, “You never look nervous. You always look like you’re just fine.” Oh, if they only knew! Even my mom would say that. She always bragged to family members on me about how “cool and calm” I was. LOL I really thought when I joined the band that I had gotten past the stage fright, and no one ever knew, but I tell you, it was really hard to do .
I think Universality was my biggest challenge. I did study abroad and that was a challenge. The booklooks amazing.
Debra, I’ve always thought what an opportunity, yet how HARD that would be. My sister went to school in Hawaii for a couple of years–now this was long ago, back in the mid 60’s when Hawaii hadn’t been a state for very long at all. Then she had the opportunity to go to Japan for 6 months and live with a family there for her Asian Studies degree. That experience was one of the highlights of her life! But having been raised in “small-town Oklahoma” she was very homesick and I know that spoiled some of the enjoyment of her travels. Where did you go to school? To me, that sounds like opportunity, fun, and excitement, but I have to confess, I would be homesick for Oklahoma no matter where I went.
After 2 failed marriages, I remarried after 7 years of being a single mother. What a wonderful 30 years we had together!
Estella, they say the third time is the charm, and you know, I’ve discovered that many times there is truth in that! I’m so glad it worked out for you and you’ve had so many years of happiness! That was definitely worth taking a chance on, wasn’t it? XO

Sharon, I’m so happy to hear you enjoyed The Devil and Miss Julia Jackson! That story means a lot to me because of the conditions I wrote it under. My son was working on his master’s degree and writing his thesis. We made a deal to “keep motivated” that we would meet at least 3-4 days every week at a little tea shop close to my house and work together. And we kept to it for about 3 months! He got his thesis written and presented and got his master’s degree in Engineering Physics, and I wrote a book. It proved to both of us what we could do if we set up a deadline and work schedule and were accountable to someone else by meeting and working together. LOL Every story in this boxed set is really good because they are all so different and they’re all well-written. I hope you enjoy them if you get the set.
These books look fantastic and would love to read them. I did quit a job one time without having another one. It all worked out for the better though.
Sometimes you just find yourself in a position that you HAVE to change–like quitting a job even though you have no other prospects yet. That’s very hard, I think. Because you are giving up the security of a paycheck for another kind of peace of mind. I’m so glad it worked out for you. I think that is one of the scariest changes we can make because there’s so much uncertainty.
Cheryl! This is great news and what a wonderful gift! My biggest gamble … it might be getting married to my husband whom I had known for only a few months. And my dad was a pastor and married us! A few years of adjustment ensued, but we have had the best time of our lives for 48 years. I’ve been blessed.
Kathy, I love that! I wonder how your dad felt about the prospect of your marriage lasting or not, not having known one another for very long. You were brave, but in your heart, you had to know your hubby was “the one” — else it would have been really tough to take that leap of faith! And goodness, my hubby and I have been married coming up on 42 years and we are STILL ADJUSTING! LOL Does it ever end? LOL Congratulations on your wonderful marriage, Kathy!
Congratulations, Cheryl! What a wonderful new release and right before Christmas! I feel like I’ve spent a lifetime taking gambles, but the biggest had to be on a Texas outlaw musician, headed for prison with no hope of ever returning. 🙂 I wrote about it. The gamble paid off in a big way!

Your books sound like Great reads! 44 years ago I took a huge gamble, I was at work 44 yrs. ago and I saw this guy that had gone to apply for a job where I was working, well, I liked him right away , he really didn’t notice me . Les than a week later he started working there , well we got to meet each other and we went out a couple of times, a month later we moved in together, (yep, I guess he liked me too) well, we lived together for a year and then we got married , so 44 years ago , 2 now grown up children with little families of their own , and 3 grandchildren we are still together, been together 44 yrs and married 43 yrs. , now that was a big gamble , but very well worth it. 🙂
Alicia, that’s like a fairy tale romance! I gambled on my hubby too–he was older than I was, had been married and had 2 kids, just back from overseas and just gotten out of the Navy–so he was MUCH more worldly than I was! LOL Here we are nearly 44 years together, coming up on our 42nd wedding anniversary in February with two grown kids of our own, and amazingly we are still together…did I mention we never owned a gun? LOLLOL (Just kidding, I would do it all over again!)
Congratulations on the release of this anthology. It sounds like a good escape from the chaos that surrounds us at the moment.
I have gambled a few times and they all worked out very well. I decided I wanted to join the Peace Corps when I heard President Kennedy announce it. I was in high school and had to finish it and college before joining. I had never been more than a few hundred miles from my home and 4 weeks after college graduation left for the other side of the world. It was fantastic. When I came back for Christmas after 2 1/2 years, I saw a classmate I had known my junior year of high school. We saw each other 3 times while I was home (he was stationed at the same AF base as my cousin’s husband and we all had dinner together). We never dated and after those three short encounters, he flew to my assignment and proposed. We both gambled on that short, non-dating relationship to decide we were the ones for each other. We celebrated our 48th anniversary this year, have 3 great children, and two wonderful grandchildren. I gambled and won the jackpot.

Patricia, what a great story. The story of your life! AWESOME! Your hubby must have had his eye on you for a while and you never knew it, during high school! He was lovestruck, and so were you! This really conjures up an image of Cupid taking aim and shooting both of you! LOL What a great success story and how wonderful it has lasted all these years. Congratulations!! The biggest gamble I ever made was deciding to get married in three months time. Our families wanted us to wait for another year. My husband and I have been married for 32 years.
Debra, from reading these comments, I’m seeing that a lot of us took a huge gamble on marrying our spouses! And wow, so many success stories–I’m thinking that’s why we write about these kinds of relationships in our novels and want to read about them, too–we identify with these characters! My biggest gamble was moving from Detroit to Washington DC a year after graduating from college. The girl I moved with has been my best friend ever since. We’re going on fifty years of friendship now. She still lives in the DC area with her hubby and I’m in NC, near her sisters, who have also become my best buds. If not for taking the plunge to get out of the chilly Michigan area, I wouldn’t have had the privilege of knowing this family.

Moving is a gamble in so many ways, and usually holds unforeseen, wonderful things that we can’t even begin to imagine until it happens to us–and all as a result of moving to a different location! You gained a whole new “family” because of taking a chance on moving in with your friend–and that is just wonderful. My unforeseen life-changer was meeting my husband in West Virginia when we moved out there. I had to go to school my senior year in high school there after going 11 years at my school in my small hometown in Oklahoma, and I thought my world had ended. But when I went to college out there I met my husband-to-be and the rest is history.
