That Special Character
Sometimes a character comes along who insists I need to tell his story. Usually RIGHT NOW when I’m working on another book. In my case, the character is usually male. What can I say? I like men.:)
Liam McFarland, the hero of The Christmas Cowboy, is that character. I knew from the moment he stepped on the page in The Wrong Brother, the first book in the Montana Made series, that I would write his story. What I didn’t know until I got into that first book was that Liam would be such a strong character that I would have to slap him down the entire book, assuring him that his story was next.
To me Liam is the ultimate hero. He’s a hard-working cowboy, who’s extremely nice to look at, and who loves animals and his family, and he wants a family of his own. Which was why he arranged for Cici Bradley to come to town. But Cici and Logan, Liam’s brother, fell in love so Liam stepped aside, still waiting for his own story.
Val Fletcher, the heroine of The Christmas Cowboy, has lived on the ranch next door to Liam her entire life. She’s a horsewoman and rancher who has a soft spot for animals. She fell in love with Liam when she was thirteen-years-old and he saved a dog from some bullies who were torturing it. She’d done her best to rescue the dog, but she wasn’t having a lot of luck against two older boys. Until Liam stepped up.
Liam is eight years older than her and Val has never been on his radar other than being his best friend’s little sister. Eventually, he realizes she’s all grown up but she’s still his best friend’s little sister and off-limits. Until he discovers Val crying at his brother’s wedding and learns she’s pregnant and the father wants nothing to do with her or her baby.
So Liam does what any good guy would do and offers to marry her. The last thing Val wants is a marriage of convenience to a man she’s been in love with forever. But between the knowledge that her old-fashioned father will never accept an unmarried pregnant daughter, no matter her age, and Liam convincing her that the marriage would benefit him as well, she’s tempted.
It may sound like I’ve told you the whole story but I promise I haven’t. This snippet is from page 10 of the book. They’re discussing what the marriage would be like. As in would it be a real marriage?
“I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t like having a marriage without sex,” Val said. Might as well get that out there now. “Would you?”
He was staring at her now with his hazel eyes deepening to green, and she had no idea what he was thinking. Great. He wasn’t attracted to her and he didn’t know how to tell her.
“No.”
“No, what?” she asked.
“No, I wouldn’t like to be married and not have sex with my wife. But if that’s what you want—”
“I just said it wasn’t.”
“Okay, then.”
Oh, the enthusiasm is killing me.
Liam and Val not only have to navigate a marriage of convenience becoming a real marriage, but they have other challenges along the way to their happily-ever-after.
Liam McFarland is one of my very favorite heroes. The quintessential cowboy with a heart of gold and a strong sense of right and wrong. He’s not perfect, no person is, but he darn near is. And it doesn’t hurt a bit that he’s hot as sin.:)

Depends on the story line of the marriage. Caring and Strong.
Caring and strong sounds good to me!
Do you like marriage of convenience stories? What qualities do you think are essential for a hero to have?
I do like marriage of convenience stories as long as it’s not a failure to be honest with each other that causes the problem. I want the hero to have a strong faith and a caring heart.
I like that in The Christmas Cowboy both Val and Liam know the truth from the beginning. Although Liam doesn’t know Val has always been in love with him.:)
I do believe. Why not. What people don’t know is sex isn’t everything in a relationship. It takes communication, trust, honesty, and commitment. I love a man who is strong enough to stick up for what he wants, loyal, family oriented and sexy doesn’t hurt.
I think you just described Liam!:)
I like marriage of convenience stories where love enters the picture. The hero should be protective, respectful, and have a strong faith in God.
I like it when love enters the picture too.:)
I like marriage of convenience stories that end in love for each other. The hero should be protective, respectful, and have a strong faith in God.
Yes, I do like marriage of convenience stories because it gives you license to build a real relationship between them and also be happy to see it blossom. It can bring tears when written just right. The books sound fantastic and I look forward to reading them. Great job. Welcome to Petticoats and Pistols.
Thank you, Judy. I’m so happy to be here!
I love books that are marriage of convenience turned to true love. My ideal hero is able to make decisions on his own and then stands by those decisions. I don’t like wimpy characters.
I don’t like wimpy characters either, Vicki.
Marriage of convenience…in Liam’s case, oh yes. He sounds like a terrific cowboy and husband material
Thanks, Deb. I think he is.:)
Welcome! Hot as sin, huh? Sounds good to me! Most Regency Romances I read are based on marriage of conveniences. But, there is always a spark there somehow! Although I like the spark and a few kisses and desiring looks, I’m not into the “getting it on” stuff on the page. Leave that to the reader’s imagination, I say!
I’m really into Liam though. Heh. He does sound like he needs to be read! I love those type of male characters! Best wishes to you!
Tracy, The Christmas Cowboy is pretty steamy. It’s a contemporary, though, not a Regency.
I love marriage of convenience stories and this one sounds so intriguing
Thank you, Rhonda. Sometimes it’s a challenge to write a present day marriage of convenience story. They need a good reason, in my opinion.
I don’t mind marriage of convenience stories as long as they true convivence. Not just someone who is bored with where they are. I think the hero should be truthful, loyal and willing to defend at a moments notice.
Truthful, loyal and willing to defend sounds like Liam to me!
It’s as good a trope as any other. It and arranged marriage seem awfully close to me. If neither partner’s affections were already engaged elsewhere these types of marriages often grew to become strongly affectionate or even truly in love.
This book sounds like it’ll be a good story but Val does seem awfully plain spoken, especially for the time period. Guess she doesn’t believe in beating about the bush.
Thanks for running the giveaway.
Truthful, loyal and willing to defend sounds like Liam to me!
Oops. That reply belongs to the previous post.
Hi, Mary. The Christmas Cowboy is a contemporary romance. Since Val is a contemporary heroine she doesn’t seem too outspoken to me. But she doesn’t beat around the bush, that’s for sure!
Hi, Mary. The Christmas Cowboy is contemporary romance. Val definitely doesn’t beat around the bush.
I do like some marriage of convenience stories.
Me too!
I do like the premise in that there’s some common goal…thanks for sharing!!
Thanks, Kate.
I do enjoy marriage of convenience stories.
So glad, Denise. Thanks for answering.
Marriage of convenience isn’t my favorite trope but I don’t mind reading them – I prefer an alpha man, even though I didn’t marry one! LOL!!
I like alpha males too, Teresa.
I love them. My mom’s dad had two marriages that were marriages of convenience. My mom and Uncle were born from the first marriage of convenience and when she passed away when my mom was only 6 weeks old, my grandpa had to put the all the children, 6 in total, in an orphanage. He ended up marrying one of the matrons so he could keep the family together. Someone had wanted to adopt my mom.
That’s quite a story, Barbara! Thanks for answering.
I enjoy marriage of convenience stories and am thankful they end up “happily ever after”!
Ginni, To me it’s not a romance if it doesn’t end up HEA.:)
I enjoy reading all types of romance stories (except erotica, no real storyline there usually). Sometimes the marriage of convenience is better than the historical “marriage by duty” and the “arranged by the father”.
The qualities in a hero, for me, are all the feel good qualities. Honest, loyal, loving, hard working, caring, fun loving, you know the ones.
The Christmas Cowboy sounds like an amazing stoty. I’m adding it to my TBR list!!!!!!!!!
Thank you, Carrie. I hope you enjoy it.:)
Good morning, your books sound great! And your character Liam sounds like a good guy and I really hope that him and Val have an HEA it really sounds like they both deserve it. (not entering this ebook giveaway as I am not tech savvy at all, but Thank you) Have a Great day and a great weekend.
Thank you, Alicia. And thanks for posting.
I enjoy marriage of convenience . The guy should be loving, caring, strong, loyal, trustworthy, respectful, strong, love God, and hard working.
Those are great qualities, Linda.
They are okay. If the hero chooses a marriage of convenience, he should be willing to “step up to the plate” no matter what happens. Thanks for the chance to win a book prize.
Thanks for your reply, Vickie. The fact that Liam stepped up to the plate is one of the reasons l love him.:)
Liam and Val sound like a match made in heaven. Like they just fit and were meant to be soul mates. Added it to my TBR list and can’t wait to read it. Thanks for being here Eve I love your books!
Tracy, Thanks so much! You made my day! I hope you enjoy Liam and Val’s story.:)
Marriage of convenience stories are one of my favorites. I think a hero has to have a strong moral compass, and he has to have something he stands for. He can’t be wishy-washy. Thanks for the chance to win!
Thanks for posting, Megan. I agree with you, especially with the no wishy washy!
sounds interesting
Thanks for posting!
Marriage of convenience is my favorite trope in contemporary and historical romance
I think I said it earlier but it’s hard to find a good reason for a marriage of convenience in a contemporary but I thought Liam and Val’s reason was valid.
I think they need to be very caring person
Don’t believe there really is a good reason for marriage of convenience unless both people secretly truly love each other
Both books sound & look like good reads, you’re a new author to me so really looking forward to trying your books
I do like marriage of convenience stories if they are handled well. There needs to be a good reason for it to be necessary or wanted. There should be some sort of reason for it that makes sense and makes the marriage necessary. It helps if the hero is to be a man of character, caring, considerate, and not afraid to stand up for those he cares for. In some cases he needs to develop those traits over the course of the relationship. He can have his own reasons for wanting the marriage, as the woman usually does.
Only if there is love.
