Special project! The Legacy of Rocking K Ranch

I have a novella collection releasing in January.

This is a fun ‘extra’ I found time to do and I realized I haven’t talked about it.

Next month we go Christmas-y…but maybe I can work The Legacy of Rocking K Ranch into the Christmas fun.

Then BOOM January 1, here comes the book!

I’d better at least MENTION it this month.

The Legacy of Rocking K Ranch is something I’ve wanted to do myself for a long time, but it’s just never quite worked out.

That is, take a dynastic western family and follow them through the generations.

Start when they first go west on the Oregon Trail maybe, then found a ranch. Next raise up some tough cowboys and cowgirls.

Just follow them generation after generation. I AM TELLING YOU I THOUGHT OF THIS BEFORE YELLOWSTONE! I SWEAR!

When a chance came to team up with three other authors and do this, I jumped at it, and it became the Legacy of Rocking K Ranch.

I wrote this a long time ago…maybe before Covid even. And kinda forgot about it. The release date was first probably not even going to happen, then all of a sudden it’s back on…where’d I put that book again?

And now, finally, here it is. My book is the beginning. Then Darcie Gruger has the child from my book all grown up.

Next is Becca Whitham then on to Kimberley Woodhouse whose story is the next generation looking back at where she came from, and finding her own future through the strength of her forebearers. Especially the women.

The Legacy of Rocking K Ranch

Six Decades of History Unfurls on a Wyoming Ranch

Journey to untamed Wyoming where four generations of women experience love, loss, grace, adoption, struggles with the law, relationships with natives, and through it all, family bonds.

Eleanor by Mary Connealy
1850 – Wagon train guide, Ray “Wild Cat” Manning, can’t ignore the abandoned wagon stricken with smallpox. Eleanor Yates, now widowed with an ailing daughter, says yes to Wild Cat’s marriage of convenience. It is her only choice—but far from her romantic dreams.

Grace by D. J. Gudger
1867 – Grace Manning abandons her journey east at Fort Laramie. The ranch is where she belongs. Unable to reach her father, Grace scrambles to find a way home. Captain Winfield Cooper is mustering out in a few short days. The gold fields at South Pass City are calling but a lonely laundress pleads to tag along with him and his motley men. Will this woman who refuses to unveil her face derail his dreams?

Caroline by Becca Whitham
1886 – Ray Cooper escaped reservation life by pursuing a degree from Harvard, but it hasn’t granted him the respect he craves in Washington, DC. Caroline Forrester longs to be more than a society hostess for her father. As the two fight against the Dawes Act, they also fight their growing attraction.

Penelope by Kimberley Woodhouse
1910 – Penelope Cooper, an ambitious writer, is commissioned by her publisher—and future husband—to present tales of the American West. She returns to her family’s ranch in Wyoming along with photographer, Jason Miller, to interview the women of her family. But will rediscovering her past make Penelope reconsider her future?

  1. I live in Wyoming, so I love to read clean historical books about Wyoming! Not so much with the contemporary books, but if they stay clean and they’re part of a series, I am more likely to read them. That tends to be true of any series, but it’s always fun to hear how others view the state where I live right now, or other places I’ve lived in.

  2. I love historical romance books, and I love a series that goes through the years.

    I haven’t watched Yellowstone.

    • Denise, we aren’t subscribed to whatever streaming thing it’s on. I can’t keep up with all that. But we watched a couple of episodes somehow, free. the people were all really MEAN

  3. No, I’ve not watched Yellowstone.

I prefer historical Christian romance, but I enjoy a contemporary one occasionally if it is clean, so I’ve read a few series that followed a family through the generations. I know I enjoy your books!!

Happy Thanksgiving to you & yours!

  4. Good morning Mary! I haven’t watched Yellowstone. But I love that type of genre. Wyoming is a state so special to me and I love the history that out pours from it. So, I will be most interested in your new release on January 1. Happy Thanksgiving to your family as well.

  5. I love history and I am so excited for this one? I’m not currently watching Yellowstone, but I love it! And yes I love books who connect and bring history all the way to our modern times. Split time fiction is my favorite

  6. I haven’t been watching Yellowstone but I should. I’ve heard its good. I love historical romance books that go way back.

  7. No, we don’t watch Yellowstone because of the language. Just watching the trailers for it turned me off. I do enjoy a series that follows a family for generations.

  8. I’m not watching Yellowstone, but I do love history and love to read it. I do like books that connect and bring history to our current times.

  9. I watched the first two seasons of Yellowstone but I have major issues with the show. I can’t stand Beth or Monica but adore Teeter. The fact that they get away with murder all the time and all the other lawlessness that they do drives me nuts. I do really like the family part of it but not the way they treat Jamie and the fact that John quite obviously wasn’t watching his daughter and she was out getting pregnant and then held her brother responsible because he helped her with the abortion in a manner that would protect the family name. And the f word is horrible in this show. Okay, rant over.

  10. I have watched a few seasons of Yellowstone but not all of them. I do enjoy historical books and also some time travel books, so I guess I would enjoy going from history to modern times.

  11. I haven’t started Yellowstone but westerns have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. So looking forward to the Rockin K Ranch.

  12. I haven’t watched Yellowstone. I read historicals which are my favorite genre. They are fascinating and interest me greatly because history shapes us, is vital to learn and is meaningful and profound. from the olden days to modern times it is interesting to read about how things evolve and change.

  13. I haven’t watched Yellowstone yet. I’m working my way thru The Rifleman.
And I don’t mind series or books that span time. As long as it holds my interest.

  14. No, I haven’t watched Yellowstone but I’ve heard some good things about it so I’m planning to check it out one of these days. Yes to Question #2. Your book sounds interesting so I’m adding it to my list. Thanks for the chance to win a prize. Happy Thanksgiving!

  15. I watch a new program until I find out if it is a clean movie/program. If one off color word is spoken I cut the program off. Such is Yellowstone. So many entertaining programs could be watched if not for such loose language wasn’t used. I really get upset when I watch a show for 1/2 an hour and all of a sudden, there goes that expletive. I immediately change stations. I wonder how many other watchers they lose because of this?
Your book doe s sound delightful and I would love to read it when it comes out. My wishes for you and your family to have a bountiful and very thankful Thanksgiving and Christmas.

  16. No, I haven’t watched Yellowstone. I grew up in Wyoming on our small family farm and will go for books set in Wyoming history first. Looking forward to these books.

  17. I haven’t watched Yellowstone.
I do live in Wyoming though and it’s fun to me as I read books set here, to visualize what it looked like back then.

  18. Yes, I watch Yellowstone
I like to read books based on historical events. I first started reading those kinds of series with those of John Jakes about early American history.
Would love to read your books.

    • Hi Joye. I’m always so disappointed when kids talk about boring history classes. to me, history is about wars and heroes, huge inventions and progress and defeat, triumph and mystery. Why isn’t a history class the most interesting one possible???

  19. I like to read series that follow generations of a family. I look forward to this new collection. I’ve not watched Yellowstone. Happy Thanksgiving!!

  20. I love historical and contemporary westerns, but I haven’t watched Yellowstone. I really don’t watch much TV. I prefer reading. Happy Thanksgiving to all who visit here!

  21. Yellowstone is much too violent for me. I tried the 1929 series and it was too much as well – even though I mostly watched it to see parts of Butte,MT where they filmed most of it, and where I live. (Some of it was even filmed a few miles from the rural area where I live.)

  22. We don’t have a television at home so most references to TV shows from the last 10 years or so are lost on me. I have read a couple of series that worked through time, but none as described here.
Each subsequent book didn’t follow a direct descendant of the previous main couple.

  23. I like to read read series that follow the characters lives. I like historical fiction. I love your books. Happy Thanksgiving. I have watched part of Yellowstone but quit on account of the language.

  24. Good morning Mary! Yes, watchingYellowstone. And 1883, plus 1923: oh yeah…and Lawman Bass Reeves! What an interesting man he was! I love series. Especially the historical ones!

Sounds like a good series you have started Mary! Best wishes!

  25. I have heard a great deal about the Yellowstone program, but I have just the basics on antenna TV. I do greatly enjoy, as a change from a traditional historical fiction, a family or generational saga. The novella collection sounds very interesting! I am blessed to have visited historic Yellowstone National Park, and we also spent some time touring around the beautiful state in general.

  26. Yes, I definitely enjoy reading series like The Legacy of Rocking K Ranch. I loved all 15 books of Jane Peart’s The Montclair Brides series.

  27. I’ve never watched Yellowstone, but I do enjoy reading a series that goes from historical to more modern-day time periods–especially when it’s a family/relative connection.

  28. Yes, I do like series like this (and no, we don’t watch Yellowstone). Did anyone else gobble up Gilbert Morris’ The House of Winslow series (started with the Pilgrims and went forward in American history)? Going even further back in time (high school) , it was Elswyth Thane’s Williamsburg Chronicles and anything by Elizabeth Goudge.

  29. I am really looking forward to this, Mary! I have not watched Yellowstone, But I do like books that follow generations!

  30. The Legacy Of Rocking K Ranch sounds like it will be a good anthology. It is always interesting to follow a family, town, group through history. Later generations can learn much tracing that history.

I watched a couple of episodes of Yellowstone, but really didn’t care for it. They aren’t very nice people. I couldn’t find much in the way of redeeming value in any of them.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  31. No, I have not watched Yellowstone. Yes, I like books that begin in history and advance to modern times. Thank you so much for sharing. God bless you. Happy Thanksgiving.

  32. No, I have not watched Yellowstone. Yes, I do like historical romance that spans through the years in a series. Wishing you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving!

  33. I love books that follow a family down through time & this one sounds like something I’m going to really like & can’t wait for it to become available. Each story presents something very different than what I’ve read about in the past & sparks my interest.

  34. Definitely have to get in on this! So enjoyed the Pink Pistol series, so know this will be just as interesting and fun! Thanks, Ladies!

  35. Hi, I love books that are series and about families, that go from generation to generation, I love following the families and how they grow and change! Your book sounds so, so very good! I have not watched Yellowstone, but I did watch 1883 and I Loved it! Thank you so much for sharing about your book, I will definitely add it to my TBR. I Love your book cover!! Have a Blessed Thanksgiving.

  36. I recently read Gilbert Morris House of Winslow series. Talking about starting at the beginning. They came over from England on the Mayflower! There is always a Winslow all through the ages of time. Good books.
I said all that to say this… I love reading a series! When I go to the library I check out the whole series when I can!
You are a great author so I know your books will be good wholesome reasing!

  37. Hi, Mary! We do not watch Yellowstone either. It’s on Peacock and we don’t pay for that. Besides it’s too much like a soap opera for Dave and too violent and vulgar for me. I love historical fiction and a generational series sounds wonderful! Can’t wait to read it!
