10 Years of Chasing Dreams

I’ve been thinking a lot about dreams.

Some dreams are small. Some are huge. Some seem attainable. Some seem beyond our reach.

But the thing about dreams is that they don’t chase us. We have to go after them to make them come true.

I thought it might be fun to share some “dream” quotes today. I love this one because it is a call to action. To not just dream about how our life could be, but to live the life we dream.

I also love this reminder that it is NEVER too late to pursue a dream. Age is only a number, not a stumbling block.

This Walt Disney quote is one of my favorite “dream” quotes. It’s a reminder to me to have courage.

You see, ten years ago, I left my day job to pursue a full-time writing career (passion!). My husband nudged me to take a big leap of faith and I haven’t regretted for even one minute that I walked away from security and stability to chase my dream.

And this quote speaks to my heart. When I left my job, so many well-meaning people acted like I’d lost my mind and poured in advice. Suggested I beg for my job back. Asked if I wasn’t too young to retire. Let me assure you, I’ve worked harder and longer the past ten years than I ever did at any of the jobs I held over the years.

And that’s because of this quote. Dreams don’t just happen. You have to work for them. Work hard. Sacrifice. Put in the sweat and determination (tears and blood – paper cuts count, don’t they?).

I’ve been pursuing a dream for ten years not just for myself, but also for CC. He believes in me whole-heartedly and it would shred my heart to let him down. And then there are my faithful readers who have become friends and so very dear to me. I am so blessed by them, and their encouragement and kindness.

So I keep dreaming bigger dreams, and then working hard to make them come true. And I will tell you, there are a lot of times I have no idea what I’m doing. There are a lot of days I’m scared by the goals I’ve set. But I love what I do. And am so grateful and so incredibly blessed to be able to do something I love every day.

What’s one dream you would like to pursue,

or that you’ve already made come true?

    • I so understand that. My parents were always going to travel when Dad retired. Only he didn’t fully retire until almost 80 and by then, Mom could no longer travel. I hope you and your husband can find some time to travel and enjoy new adventures!

    • Teresa F.: I can remember my dad taking us to our family vacation site and then he went back home to the farm. He came back to get us when the week was up. No vacation for him ever and, unfortunately, my mother was tragically taken from us at the age of 42. They never got a vacation with the entire family.

  1. Good morning Shanna! Some of my dreams have come true. God has truly blessed my life and family. I still have goals to reach and one is a new kitchen! Which hopefully will happen next year. A few other goals were to retire and have most everything paid for. That has happened. Praise the Lord!

But my dream is to start back creating art. I usually do colored pencil work which is detailed and time consuming. I would like to expand on that some by doing some raw edge appliqué and combine the two together. This is my plan. I have won a few ribbons on my art in the past, but life gets so busy. I put it once again on the back burner, but I feel it’s time to pursue it again. My prayer is that God will lead me in the right direction. He has blessed me with this talent and I should once again take up my pencil and draw with His hand leading mine.

Congrats on your dreams coming true Shanna. And May God keep blessing you!

    • Hi Tracy,
What you shared is beautiful – draw with His hand leading mine. I love that. And I hope you can work on your dreams coming true with God’s direction and blessing. The art I’ve seen you’ve created is amazing and truly a gift!
Thank you for your kind words and for blessing me with your friendship! I’m so thankful for you!

  2. My dream is to go to Wyoming to see my oldest sister and brother, to Kansas to see my youngest sister and then onto Arizona to see my dad’s youngest brother, my Uncle Verne.

  3. I can’t recall whether I ever dreamed of it, but I probably did. I went to Hawaii to celebrate my 44th birthday with my husband and his sister and her husband, in 1988. What a beautiful trip and I still remember it to this day. Our plan was to return in 2 years but it did not come to fruition. Work and being frugal kept us from reliving that trip. I still remember so much of that trip, all these years later, and enjoy every minute of the memories. Often I will look up pics and videos of Hawaii. I also watch every program on tv that is enacted in Hawaii. I am there in my own way.

    • Oh, what a wonderful way to celebrate your birthday all those years ago, Judy. And I love that the memories are still so vibrant in your mind and heart. May they continue to bring you joy for years to come!

  4. I always dreamt of being a Fashion Designer for the movies. Edith Head was my idol. But life didn’t go that way. The closest I got was to have been a Home Economics teacher for many years, teaching young girls how to design and sew.

  5. What a fun post. Thanks for sharing. I have seen some of these quotes before and love them. I read a few of Zig Zilglars books and loved them. I had a dream of learning to quilt. Mom found out about it and enrolled the two of us into a quilting class. I was in high school. One of my dreams was a family with lots of kids. I got married and we had two kiddos. LOL I was done That was enough. But I continued with my dream of quilting when the kiddos were both in school full time. I joined a group at church that made quilts for the pregnancy center we were a part of. Now I quilt on my on and I still love it.

    • That is so neat your mom enrolled the two of you in a quilting class and you are still quilting. Love, love that! Isn’t Zig Ziglar great. Just love his quotes!
      Happy quilting!

  6. I would love to update my kitchen again. It was done about 33 years ago so I am ready for a new one again with new cabinets and countertops. Mine are well worn now.

  7. I heard President Kennedy’s speech establishing the Peace Corps when I was in high school. I decided then it was something I wanted to do. I had to finish high school and college first, but my end goal was always to join. I applied my senior year of college and left for training a few weeks after graduation. I served the standard 2 year assignment and extended for a third year. It was a fantastic experience. A week before I left for my initial training, I had a former Extension Agent offer me my dream job – the school district he worked for had outdoor properties they wanted developed for outdoor education programs. They wanted someone to develop the property, write the curriculum, and implement the program. I had to pass it up for the other dream. As it turned out, by the time I got back to the States 3 years later, budget cuts were hitting school districts and programs like the wanted me to start were being cut.
