Bucket List?

The Brides of Hope Mountain Series

I FINALLY HAVE A COVER FOR BOOK THREE!!!

And today one lucky commenter (hey LUCKY is my spin, okay?) will win a signed copy of book #2, NOT YET RELEASED…Woman of Sunlight.

Getting a book published was a bucket list thing for me.

I’m not big on bucket lists. In fact, I sort of have what I think of as a REVERSE bucket list. I think of all the things I used to want to do and never got done and I’m all WHAT WAS I THINKING??? THANK HEAVENS I NEVER GOT THAT DONE!!

So I don’t mark things off my bucket list by DOING them. I mark things off by coming to my senses.

So, last month, I did something I’ve never quite gotten marked off my bucket list (very short these days)

I took a helicopter ride to the bottom of the Grand Canyon!

OH YES I DID! I took photos, mainly because I wanted to prove it to myself that I did it, later when I began to think it was just something I cooked up in my imagination.

This is a picture of a picture, if that makes sense (it doesn’t, oops). Part of the flight package is a snapshot (not free just available to buy) of us with our pilot.

Do they have a digital picture? Nope, just that picture to hand over.

So I propped it up and snapped a picture of that picture.

Our pilot looked and sounded like Ben Affleck. He was a great combination of cool competence, thus earning my shaky trust, and humor. Just a nice smooth combination.

It was a perfect day. I was so nervous about the helicopter. They always seem so SWOOPY on TV. But it was as smooth as silk. Once while we seemed to just be creeping along in the sky I asked him how fast we were going.

He said: 150 mph.

I couldn’t feel the speed. I was worried about air sickness but never even close.

My Cowboy came along. This is something I’ve wanted to do since I wrote a book set in the Grand Canyon a whole lotta years ago, called Deep Trouble.

I did so much research for that book that, by the time I was deep into it, I wanted to hike to the bottom of the Grand Canyon. But I was pretty sure I’d die. So I discovered you could FLY down there.

And the bucket list had a new agenda item.

Bucket Lists. Do you have them? Do you have a dream? A goal? Tell me about one of them that you’ve done or still want to do…or have come to your senses. (parachute jump anyone…that’s one I kicked off a while ago)

My ‘get a book published’ bucket list item is going GREAT. My new release (coming March 3) Woman of Sunlight, is my SIXTY-FOURTH BOOK. That’s some huge leap beyond getting ONE published, huh?

Today, leave a comment and get your name in the drawing for a signed copy of Woman of Sunlight. Let’s talk dreams, goals, ambitions, bucket lists.

  1. Hi, Congratulations getting your helicopter ride off your list! You are brave, I don’t think I would get in one, well, I think I would sit in one and that would be it, no ride for me. 🙂 I don’t do bucket lists. I would love to travel in a train for a week or so, I’ve been on trains but not for that long of a trip. Maybe someday I will accomplish doing it. Thank you for sharing your photos of your helicopter ride and about your ride. Your books sound like very good reads, and the covers are Beautiful. Thank you for the chance. Have a Great rest of the week. God Bless you.

    • Hi Alice. The whole ride (a van picked us up) to the helicopter place, My Cowboy kept saying, We don’t have to go if we don’t want to. We can (or you can) change your mind. And I seriously considered it except I was determined to just face it, do it.

We did make sure our affairs were in order first. 🙂

    • Your books are ones I always know I will enjoy. I get them each time I see your name on it. If I would be selected for your giveaway I would like to instead have it sent to my friend that is looking for a new to her Christian author of western romance. She likes print books. I now read all my books on my iPad due to retinitis pigmentosa.

    • Hi! I can NOT wait to read book #2!!! I am not a daring person at all, so my bucket list is ridiculously mild. An example of an item on said list is making a visit to Alistair Begg’s church in Cleveland. 🙂

  2. Congrats on being able to check off from your bucket list. I’ve only been in a helicopter once, to go from Newark Airport to New York. It was windy and turned out to be the chippies ride you can imagine and very small inside. Great picture of a picture ?. Have a good day.

  3. Congrats on being able to check off from your bucket list. I’ve only been in a helicopter once, to go from Newark Airport to New York. It was windy and turned out to be the choppiest ride you can imagine and very small inside. Great picture of a picture ?. Have a good day.

  4. I don’t have a bucket list but I would love to travel the Oregon Trail. I don’t even know if people can follow it or how. I’d want to take my time and learn about the different landmarks.

    • On my bucket list is to see all 50 states, then I want to see the world. I have 4 states left to see. The Grand Canyon is an amazing place and I would love to go to the bottom, but could never hike it, or even ride a horse, so the helicopter ride sounds awesome, just not sure I could handle the ride.
Congratulations on getting to book 64 being published.

    • Most of my remaining bucket list things are natural beauty. I really haven’t traveled much. I go to writer’s conferences and that takes me interesting places.
But I’ve never been to Yellowstone. Never been to Yosemite.
There are some caverns in Kentucky and Missouri I’d like to see. I saw Carlsbad Cavern years ago and it was fantastic. It inspired my Kincaid Brides series…those amazing, stunning, regal caverns.
Southern Utah National Parks. I’ll see what they’re like!!!

  5. How wonderful! We had a helicopter ride around the Big Island of Hawai’i on our honeymoon–as close to the volcanoes as was safe.

I don’t have a bucket list. I don’t want to have a list of things I never did and have regrets. I’ve been lucky and rappelled off a tower and a building in college, completed a military obstacle course in college, gone up in a hot air balloon, and several other great experiences in my life.

    • I have gotten to travel to a lot of pretty places. I love lighthouses and have gotten to see some up close. I got to cross the Columbia River a few times, once driving across it to Astoria, Oregon, at the mouth of the river. It was an amazing sight. My family and I walked to Cape Disappointment on the Washington side of the river years ago. My big memory from years ago is slipping in the mud and landing on my bottom (I saved my camera from the mud) on the walk.
I always thought of Cave of the Winds near Colorado Springs as the caves in your Kinkaid series. What a cool setting for a series.
I can’t wait for the new book to come out! I love your books!
My next trip will be by train from Texas to Virginia for my granddaughter’s graduation from Coast Guard A School in April. I haven’t been on a cross country train trip since I was a child.

  6. I want visit Montana that has been on my bucket list for years. Hope maybe in the next year or so to finally see the state I have only read about and saw in pictures

    • Wishing you the best on your “One day” book series, Abigail! Hoping that dream comes true and you’re making a post like this!

  7. I would love to go to Cadillac Mountain in Arcadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine in the fall. Love your book covers Mary. So beautiful! Congratulations on 64 published books. That is amazing!

  8. Wow! Go girl! Your helicopter ride sounds amazing! My bucket list consisted of visiting all fifty states. My hubby and I completed that wonderful task in 2018.

  9. One thing I’ve marked off is spending a week at working western ranch! It was in MT and I had so much fun! One thing still on my bucket list is taking a hot air balloon ride. I think that would be amazing!

  10. Congrats on knocking something off your bucket list. I would have enjoyed doing that myself. I don’t really have a bucket list but would love to go to Scotland some day. Now that I am older I am not sure I would even enjoy a trip like that. When you get older you just don’t travel as well as you did when you were young.

  11. Your covers are amazing and make me want to read your books for sure! I think I just have a couple of things on my bucket list: write a book (or a story or something, just get back into writing), ride a horse (I rode my nephew’s horse once around the pasture, but it was just a few minutes so I don’t know if it counts, and own a St. Bernard. Right now, the car isn’t big enough for kids and a large dog so I’m waiting for the kids to grow up and move out and enjoying my French Bulldog mix instead.

  12. I am so happy to have found your books! Top of my bucket list is to bring my children to various national parks before they move out. Since we are homeschooling I hope we can make a trip every year!

  13. I don’t really have a bucket list. I wanted to go to Hawaii, for like forever, and my sweet husband made that dream a reality last year.

Which leaves really just one item that I can think of, I want to publish a book or twenty. 🙂 I took back up my writing cap a few years back, now that my kiddos are more independent and I have been polishing up my storytelling. So getting one or more of my books that I have been plugging away at published is a big dream for me. 🙂

Have a great day, Mary! Thank you for all the great adventures you have taken me on.

  14. Love the new cover! I have a sort of bucket list. There’s not really anything extravagant on there. Just some things I would like to see/do in my lifetime. The main goal my husband and I have is to eventually open a bookstore and a book-themed bed and breakfast. It might not happen until retirement, but it is what we would love to do. ??

  15. Wow! 64th book. I’m in awe. I’ve read most of those books. 🙂

I don’t know that I have a bucket list as much as things I’m petitioning God for. Whether or not He’ll grant my desires is yet to be seen. In the waiting time, I trust Him to work things in His way and His timing.

BTW, so cool riding a helicopter to the bottom of the canyon. My son and I were able to see areas around the rim when he was in fifth grade many years ago. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.

  16. Cannot wait to read the other two books in the series. Hmm, I would like to do a lot of things. But traveling is a biggie for me. I would like to go to Ireland and Poland amongst the many places I want to see.

  17. Congrats on your next book! I don’t really do bucket lists either. I’d rather think about the wonderful things I have done. I’ve explored several of Alexander the great’s abandoned castles, ridden quite a few steam trains, wrote a (unpublished) children’s fantasy book series, for my kids, and they said once ” Mom, you go write, I’ll do the dishes!

  18. I did the helicopter ride in Hawaii. Loved it.
My bucket list had flying in a blimp. That one is off the list. But my biggy was to see all 50 of the USA. Still have about 10 or 12 to visit. Don’t think I will make it as I am 86 and not desiring to travel anymore.

  19. Wow, I’ve never Done a helicopter ride YET, not going
To say I won’t or will. I’m like you they look extremely choppy on TV.
Love all your books, I think I have all of them that I can get my hands on and have all the Kindle Ones I can get too. I got a couple hooked
In them that goes to church with me and she reads them to her Husband and he Loves them. They wait impatiently I must say for the next one to be released. ??

    • Hi, I love your books,I haven’t read all of them yet but I’m working on it. Would love to win this book,I love the covers. I don’t have much of a bucket list either, but I’ve always wanted to go see the Grand Canyon.

  20. I would love to go up in a hot air balloon but afraid I would “chicken out “.
I am so glad you did your book bucket list because I love all your books.

  21. Congratulations on your new book! I’m excited to read it!! I’ve been waiting (not patiently I might add) for it!! Lol
I do have a few things I’d like to do and see in the future but to call it a bucket list , I wouldn’t go that far.
    Your adventure looked amazing!!
    God bless!

  22. You have have a brave heart to ride in the helicopter just like I imagine your heroines in this series. Would love to win!

  23. A bucket list item for me is to hold a koala bear or play with otters. (Both preferably …but not at the same time.) Also, a bucket list item is to get published.
I remember reading Deep Trouble and you put me in the Grand Canyon. (Love that story too!)
Keep working on that bucket list Mary! 🙂

  24. I’m glad you are getting things done on your bucket list. I’m especially grateful that your publishing a new book is on it!! You help fulfill my list of reading new books!!! Thanks for your wonderful stories!!

  25. I’m so happy to see the third book cover. All three are beautiful. Can’t wait to read Woman of Sunlight in a couple of weeks!

  26. Great pictures, and kudos for doing something I am sure would be too scary for me. And thank you. You are the first person I’ve heard articulate my bucket list policy. I call it my Reverse Bucket List like you or my Non-Bucket List. If I’ve lived this long and haven’t already done it maybe it wasn’t that important to begin with. So I just happily mark things off as “Sigh of relief – don’t have to do that!” and go on.

Congrats on the upcoming release (that’s a LOT of books!) and thanks for the giveaway.

  27. I’d love to go to Hawaii someday! More remote, not touristy. For a more achievable goal, I hope to homeschool my children, starting next year! I’ve never been in a helicopter, but it sounds fun! My parents and my dad got a free shirt because the one he was wearing got oil spilled all over it. I think leaking oil would have scared me!

  28. My bucket list includes going to all the Disney theme parks around the world with my sister.

And a few other (cheaper) goals, like watch all the films that won the best picture Oscar. And learn to bake bread. And learn to fly a small plane.

  29. I don’t really have a bucket list but I love to travel and see new places. Alaska is near the top of that list and your new book cover makes me think of there! Love all your book so I am looking forward to the new one.

  30. Congratulations. All three of these covers are just gorgeous. I am like you with the bucket list thing. I looked at my list I made before I was even married and went, Oh my goodness that is never happening. LOL I do make goals for myself though. This year a few of my goals are: loose weight (happening), learn applique (started) I made two pot holders for my daughter that have two different types of applique on them. She will get them for christmas. Yes, I am having fun. Oh but that helicopter ride sounds like it would be fantastic. I have been to the Grand Canyon many times but never in a helicopter. HMMM Thanks for being here today.

  31. I live in Arizona and have visited the Grand Canyon lots of times. I have seen it covered with snow, fog, sunlight and shaded by lots of clouds. It is undescribable-so beautiful.
My one thing I would like to do is take a raft down the Colorado River through the canyon like a lot of tourists do.

  32. I don’t really have much of an official bucket list, but the Grand Canyon is definitely a must see!
When I was kid, we drove from Arkansas to California to visit family. One of the cousins had a pilots license and took me up in a helicopter. My mom threw a fit. So I have always equated spontaneous rides in a helicopter a little wild and rebellious! What a fun memory!! Hahaha ?

  33. love the covers, and you are brave for going in a helicopter. i guess this trip i am planning is something to cross off my dreams/bucket list. you see, back in the 80’s my mom use to take me and my sister on trips, and we always took the amtrak. they have sleeper cars, but we could never afford it, and she would always say, “one day ellie, we will get a sleeper car” its like first class for trains, lol well when i take my trip in the fall I am getting the sleeper car for me and my kids, its kinda like a “im doing this for you ma, and diane, ” i know they will be with me in sprite when we travel but it is going to be a great trip. I have found memories of my ma, my sis and me traveling on the amtrak,

    • I have always dreamed of getting one of my own books published but I’m not quite brave enough yet. I also dream of owning a ranch! I’ve always love horses and cattle and someday I want to own a herd of cattle and several horses. I’ve traveled so many times in my life but I think it would be amazing to settle down on my own piece of land. So happy you got to ride a helicopter, how fun! The pictures are beautiful and I’m so excited to read your new book!

  34. The Grand Canyon is a place I would love to see!

My husband and I own a small business, a dream or mine would be to grow/expand that so my husband could quit his full time job.

  35. The helicopter ride sounds awesome. I hope to knock off traveling to all the landmarks in the US on my bucket list in my lifetime. Thanks for. Chance to win a signed copy! I can’t wait to read it!!!

  36. You are so brave! I don’t know if I could take a helicopter into the Grand Canyon. Glad you did though!

  37. I recently saw a Facebook ad for glamping in Utah that included very wonderful “covered wagons” with air conditioning and luxury bedding and suite like interiors. Includes horse back riding into monument nations park where old west movies were done. It is expensive but that is now my #1 bucket list item! I love the idea of old west but I love to be pampered. 🙂
I also love your books. So fun to read and I think I have read them all so far. I look forward to finishing this series!!

  38. Mary, your helicopter ride sounds amazing! Thank you for sharing these beautiful photos.

I’d love to go horseback riding in Israel.

Your series has such gorgeous covers! I’m looking forward to reading it. 🙂

  39. I LOVE your books and it would be amazing to win this one! I’ve never ridden in a helicopter but love flying. So glad you crossed this off your bucket list and shared it with us. Thanks for the giveaway!

  40. I love your books they are so fun to read. Sometimes they make me laugh out loud. I don’t really have a bucket list but I would like to travel more especially out west.

  41. I loved “Aiming for Love “, which is no surprise since I love all your books and can’t wait for the next two!

  42. Hey Mary that is so cool that you were able to ride a helicopter. I don’t think I would have the nerve to ride one. I would love to travel to Ireland someday because seeing pictures seems like it does no justice. I love your books and can’t wait to read your newest book. Have a great day.

  43. Jackson Hole and Yellowstone were on my bucket list and I went there in September! Alaska is on my list but have my doubts I will make it there!

  44. I don’t do bucket lists and only ever had something I wanted to do before I died and that was visit Scotland. Well, we did that two years ago! So I’ve got nothing now and I’m totally fine with that. Haha! I agree, helicopters seem way too swoopy for me.

  45. I don’t really have a bucket list. I would like to visit the Grand Canyon but I think I will pass on the helicopter ride.

  46. How fun to read of your adventure and everyone’s dreams. Mine was always to have a pet deer. Wanted one forever, which was an absolute no way, and got lots of garden statues and stuffed deer. On my birthday around 5th grade, someone called asking if we could take one in, an Asian fallow that needed a home. We had the property and the fencing, so how could my folks say no. Afraid to ask for too much more! Ha! I am in the middle of Aiming for Love and just got to hear Ursula sing!! SO excited to see the third cover! It has been a treat to meet the three sisters, so unique apart and so beautiful together. Thanks for sharing your talents and the chance to win a copy of the new release!

  47. I have been lucky enough to check many things off my bucket list. We did our Alaska Trip this past summer. Now I am working on a long wanted trip to Ireland, Scotland, and England. We both want to work on or family ancestry with further research. I still have zip lining on my list (my daughter says I am nuts, the harness will hurt). We started hiking down the Grand Canyon many years ago (over 30) but one of our daughters was sick and it was very hot, so we only made it a mile or so down. We have been considering trying to ride the mules down. The helicopter would be a lot easier and likely less painful. We have both been in a helicopter, so there is no issue there. One of the first things I ever put on my list was joining the Peace Corps. I heard Kennedy’s speech and decided that day it was what I wanted to do. First I had to finish high school and college, but I left for training 3 weeks after I graduated. It was well worth waiting for.

  48. My husband and I talk about “bucket lists” sometimes. The top thing on both of ours has always been to go sky-diving. But that may have to wait quite a while now, as our first munchkin is due to arrive in the next few weeks and I’m not sure when/if we’ll do that, now. 🙂
Other than that, though, I can’t really think of anything that has consistently been an, “oh, we have to do ______.” We just kind of do things and end up going, “that was really cool! I’m glad we did that!”

  49. I really don’t have a bucket list but one place I would really love to go see is the Biltmore estate can’t wait to read book 2 love your books ?

  50. I really don’t have a bucket list but one place I would really love to go see is the Biltmore estate can’t wait to read book 2 love your books ?

  51. I don’t really have a bucket list but a place I would really like to go see is the biltmore estate can’t wait to read book 2 love your books

  52. My bucket list is going to Scotland and Ireland. Driving a semi. Lol. Don’t ask me why. Thank you for sharing your story with us all.

  53. I am still hoping to see the Grand Canyon, Mount Rushmore, and the Redwood Forest. Thanks for your giveaway.

  54. I want to travel to Scotland and Ireland one day! Those are high on my bucket list. Congratulations on your new book!!!

  55. I had a helicopter ride for all of maybe 10 minutes. I felt like a kid in a candy store. I got to sit in the co-pilot’s seat. It was so cool looking down on farm land by Fort Vermilion, Alberta. It would be cool to win. My bucket list gets shorter as my health deteriorates. ?
