Nothing Gold Can Stay
Nature’s first green is gold
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf’s a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.
——————-Robert Frost
To Celebrate these golden days of Autumn, leave a comment about your favorite things about fall. The golden and orange leaves. Bright pumpkins. Children in costumes and buckets of candy. The cool evenings. The end of mowing and bugs. The oncoming holiday season.
One lucky commentor will win a copy of The Reluctant Warrior:
…Union army officer Cameron Scott is used to being obeyed, but nothing about this journey to Lake Tahoe has gone as expected. He’s come to fetch his daughter and nephew, and seek revenge on the people who killed his brother. When danger descends on the cabin where they’re huddled, Cam is hurt trying to protect everyone and now finds Gwen caring for him too. He soon realizes why the kids love her so much and wonders if it might be best for him to move on without them. Happy Autumn Mary- what a beautiful book cover and I love his hat, it caught me eye right away. I hope you have a wonderful autumn.
Hi Tonya. Fall is a lot of work out here in the country. Calf weaning next week. Crops to harvest. But it’s beautiful, too.
Happy Autumn! I love the smell of wood fire in the fireplace, taste of warm apple cider, and the crunch of dried leaves under my feet.
Hi MJSH, a wood fire. The best smell ever. Warm Apple Cider and pumpkin spice EVERYTHING!!!
Happy Fall Y’all! I love cooler nights and the occasional cooler days here in Texas. I love football season, especially Dallas Cowboy games. I love fall foods, soups, stews, pumpkin and pecan pies, cakes made from my mothers pear tree and other hearty foods we do not tend to prepare in the heat of summer. Fall is the beginning of my favorite time of year, Halloween and Thanksgiving, which I love, lead us into Christmas and winter. I have MS which causes us MSers to be heat intolerant and I live in Texas so the slightest lowering of temps has to be my favorite thing about fall though.
Stephanie, I love chili soup and we never have it in the summer. It’s almost time for a pot!!!
Love that cover. What I love about Fall is the lower temperatures, the beautiful color’s and smells. Pumpkin and spice filling the air. Halloween and the little ones trick or treating. But it’s also the lead in to Thanksgiving & Christmas which means family gatherings.
I bought a pumpkin this week and set it out by my mailbox. It’s not fancy decorating but I love that pop of bright color every time I drive home.
Love your book cover!! I love the pumpkin spice everything that’s available in the fall and the cooler temps.
I love pumpkins, cooler weather, fall colors. Thank you for the chance to win a copy of this book. It looks like a really good one.
I love leaves changing color and driving by mountains that are so colorful.
Debra, we live in the bluffs alone the Missouri Rivers, lots of trees. It’s such a pretty drive in the fall.
Happy fall! I enjoyed the poem and your book cover is so pretty.
Isn’t that a great cover, Janine. My publisher did such a great job.
Good morning Mary,
Always nice to see you in another venue, especially since I’ve already been on Seekerville this morning and didn’t understand a word Pam said. Sigh. This is also I think the shortest blog post I’ve ever seen from you! That said, I live in New Hampshire and we do fall really well. We are home to the White Mountains and several smaller peaks, and the fall foliage is amazing, it just goes On and On. Wish I could post a picture, but will be chronicling it on Facebook. I make Pumpkin Pie Muffins, contact me offline if you want the recipe. We go nuts for pumpkin here, a garage in a nearby town offered a Pumpkin Spice Oil Change last year, think he was joking. The air has a certain smell, leaf mold, not as gross as it sounds, and there’s also the smell of bonfires and that first wood stove fire of the season. And the sun is somehow brighter than ever, as if it has to make its presence known before fading for winter. Thick sweaters, thick scarves, hot drinks, scuffling through leaves. There is an air of both anticipation, as we snap into our fall-and-winter routines, and sorrow to see summer fade (I PICKED MY LAST TOMATO) and think about those who have gone before.
Please enter me in drawing.
It’s a special salute to fall. And it is really short isn’t it. We’ve harvested our last potato but have some to last a while. We’ve been eating zucchini like crazy for months and haven’t gotten tired of it yet. We have BLTs with our own tomatoes about five days a week.
It was so NICE to see you this week, Kathy. I’m so sorry about the whole mix-up with your room!
I enjoy the cooler weather, the leaves changing color and Football.
Hi Estella, this summer seems so long and hot. I love being able to snuggle under a blanket.
I loved the poem. I enjoy the cooler weather and maybe the end of mowing but around here the mowing seem to go on forever. I need to mow right now but we have had so much rain it is just to wet to mow its like living in a swamp right now. I love taking long walks and looking at the leave changing colors this time of the year.
I think this is the first year EVER My Cowboy never got a week off mowing the lawn. Often times in August the grass is dormant and maybe a few weeks need to be hit with the mower. But not this year. The grass just seemed thrilled to keep growing…bless it’s heart!
I cannot wait to read this book! In fact, my husband and I both enjoy listening to the comedy of Mary Connealy! Congratulations on another exciting Cowboy Comedy!
It’s coming Mary. It releases Tuesday!!!
The best thing about fall is the cool nights. I love it when it dips into the 60’s! Days that don’t hit 90 are also a fall favorite.
It’s so much cooler but we don’t have a frost yet. That usually really changes the leaves and brings out the colors.
love the fall weather up here in Wisconsin, beautiful fall colors, and some time the warm weather to enjoy a road trip or two. love you books, love reading them, can’t wait until your next book comes out
Cooler weather, a great time to curl up with a book!!! 🙂
Mary, great blog! Thanks so much and the books look wonderful. Added to my to read list. Hugs and thanks, Phyliss
Hi Phyliss, thank you!!!
I love the cooler days, leaves changing color. It feels like there’s a calm in the air before the storm. Black Friday. Hahaha
Pam, the calm before the storm of…holiday shopping??? 😀
Fall is my favorite season. I love the color in the trees, the fun decorations, cooler temperatures, and college football.
I’m glad we’re celebrating it then, Cheryl!
Autumn is my favorite season. I love everything about it. The cooler temps, the beautiful colors, the holidays, college football, boots, jeans and flannel! 🙂
I love the fresh crisp air, the smell of wood burning in the fire place. The pumpkin and cinnamon smell. Fall my favorite time of the year.
The best thing is the smell of fallen leaves (the changing colors are lovely, of course, but for me, it isn’t Fall until I can SMELL it). Granted, the cool weather and decreasing humidity are wonderful, also.
Thank you for sharing your great post. I love everything fall!!!
I absolutely love the changing colors of the leaves!
No more BUGS!!! Ok there is more, like sweatshirts, bonfires, falling leaves, warm drinks, boots, scarves, cozy blankets! I just adore this season!
Susan, no more bugs is HUGE!!!
I love fall!!! From the colors of the leaves to the aroma of the crisp weather!! I love warm mugs of cider and lots of book reading!
Coolness in the air and the changing of the leaves.
The smell of ripe fruit in the orchard, the changing colors of trees, blooming chrysanthemums and asters, and, yes, the end of lawn mowing and watering for a few months. Of course when spring comes I’ll be anxious to get the water going and everything growing again.
The cooler weather, cozy sweaters and wool socks, stews and soups and chili… And the day we cave and decide to turn the heater on 😉 Thanks for reminding us about this lovely poem and for the great visuals, Mary!
Fall is my favorite season. I love the cooler temperatures, the beautiful colored leaves, decorating the house, and planting pansies.
I love the colors of fall. The different colors of leaves, the orange of the pumpkins, the tan of the fodder shocks, the burnt orange of bittersweet. All of these are perfect accents for the end of the growing season and the evidence of our hard work culminating in the harvest. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I love Halloween Anything to do with Halloween Happy Friday
One thing: pumpkin pie.
Autumn is my favorite season of the year. It always has been. I grew up in the Northeast, the NE corner of New York which is really more a part of New England than anything else. From our house on the side of the Adirondack Mountains, we could see Lake Champlain, the Green Mountains of Vermont, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The colors of Autumn were glorious. We lived in the Rockies for 3 years. The colors are different, but the golden aspen have their own special beauty. We now along the Blue Ridge Mountains. The colors are similar to New England, just later. I love the cool, crisp air, the crunch of fallen leaves underfoot, all the fall produce. My corner of NY was McIntosh apple country and I always looked forward to late September and early October when the apple crop was ready to pick. Apple pies would grace out table frequently afterwards.
Have a wonderful Autumn season.
We don’t get the colors of autumn because we are too far in the South. Love to go and visit states that do get autumn colors. I’m also looking forward to the release of this new book. Can’t wait to read it!
Happy Fall! I love the crisp air and watching college football!
Fresh apple cider season, apple cider donuts freshly made, the start of NFL football, the sound of crickets in the evening, tourists (finally) go home (Oregon coast), temps not too hot or cold, and I love when it gets darker earlier in the evening!
The one thing I miss living on the coast, we don’t get the fall colors on the trees! Pine trees don’t change and birch trees just shed their leaves. I grew up in Illinois and I remember the vivid reds, oranges, and yellows of the maple or oak trees. Beautiful!
Thank you for the giveaway chance, Mary, and fun post!
Looking so forward to this book!
I love the colors of the leaves, the coolness of the air, and bonfires! Especially when I have a great book to read! Love your books Mary and I can’t wait to read this one!
This one will be a good one, too! Thanx, Mary, for your humor!
I love Mary Connealy books! I can’t wait for the new book to come out.
Great cover! I know the work of the farm growing up I had some chores to do but you don’t realize at that time how much your parents do. I love the cooler weather, the colored leaves of the trees and bright sunshine. I also made chili last week and a pumpkin pie today. Autumn food!
