The Great Western Christmas Celebration

Now it’s time for our story twist. A catastrophe befalls our town – affecting the celebration or the Christmas Day service or some other aspect of Christmas for our town.

So what kind of catastrophe do we have and what is at stake? It could be  disastrous – a blizzard threatens to cancel the charity food drive. Or tragic – a fever sweeps through the town. Or even slightly humorous – an unexpected balmy spell melts the snow and threatens to cancel the snowman building contest. Keep the year in mind so we don’t have a cattle stampede through town during modern times or canceled flights during the Oklahoma land rush.

A blizzard not only impacts the activities, it has delayed the delivery of items people have been waiting on: food, dry goods, toys, etc… Santa may not make it and Christmas, aside from the faith aspects, is threatened with not happening, so they must remember the true meaning of Christmas as they all gather in the church or other large venue.

  9. The furnace went out in the place the children were going to perform the Christmas pageant.
    Or someone vandalized by breaking the windows.

  10. While everyone is enjoying the parade, a herd of deer sweep through town and have their own lunch of the prepared town picnic, including Mrs. Harveys famous, and delicious fruit cake!

  13. All the gingerbread houses melted due to a furnace malfunction leaving nothing but a puddle for the big Gingerbread house contest.

  15. After attacking the stagecoach, impacting not only the folks on board but also the delivery of mail, which contained gifts for people, the nefarious gang of outlaws went through the town and broke the windows of many of the shops and ransacked them, ruining grocery staples and stealing much of the merchandise. When they tried to break into the blacksmith’s shop they ran into a problem………

  20. A horrible blizzard comes upon the town unexpectedly, and the church offers shelter for those in need, while the women in town do what they do best, prepare delicious meals to offer the hungry and to the hard working men of town helping those they can.

  21. A fire – perhaps one of the candles in a window display caught the curtains on fire and since the wooden structures are so close together a few more structures caught fire before the towns people could put out the fire.

  24. An ice storm plagues our small western town just before Christmas! What shall we do? People began to gather at the livery to check on their stabled horses. Soon, it was fitting to do as Mary and Joseph did – meet in a stable since the inn was full.

  25. I’m going with someone has plans to rob the bank while everyone in town is busy with the Christmas festivities, and when one loan man (our hero, of course!) goes up against the gang, he’s injured (not fatally, of course!), and a blizzard is coming in to cover their tracks!

  28. All of the women in town go on strike because they’re frustrated that the men aren’t celebrating the true spirit of Christmas!

  29. A gang of bank robbers come into town and rob it’s only bank. The sheriff and deputies corner them as they dart into the town’s restaurant before they are able to get out of town. The robbers hold the owners and a few customers hostage. All Christmas celebrations come to a halt as the sheriff tries to get the robbers to give up and come out before someone gets hurt. With plenty of food and drink available in the restaurant, the robbers feel like they can hold out for a long time.

  32. A warm front blows in bringing rain, melting the snow and causing rivers and streams to rise to flood stage (that happens often here in the west in mid-December as it is this week). Everyone is busy moving animals and protecting their homes leaving no time for celebrating.

  34. A huge avalanche from a nearby mountain comes down with such force it reaches the town, not burying it, but leaving enough snow that stops all activities. The citizens start organizing shovel brigades and wagons to haul some of the snow away.

  36. A blizzard rolls in a few days before Christmas Eve. The weight of the snow caves in a portion of the church’s roof, where the festivities are to be held.

  40. During a storm, all the ornaments and decorations that are supposed to be used for the tree in the town square were broken so now the town’s decoration committee is trying to get donations from townspeople of whatever they have to spare.

  43. A major polar cold front descended on Hollyberry a week before Christmas freezing EVERYTHING, wells, water troughs and the river that ran through town. Unfortunately, the weather began warming quickly a couple of days before Christmas. The quick thaw released a torrent of ice and water into the town flooding homes and businesses in all their holiday finery. Christmas underwater was not a gift the residents of Hollyberry had anticipated.

  45. Two days before the last day of school, a measles outbreak struck half of the students attending the one-room schoolhouse. The Christmas play was scheduled for 1 pm, followed by a party that everyone in town was planning to attend!

  47. A bridge on the only road into town from their supply center is damaged and closed. The special supplies they have ordered for the Christmas celebration can’t get over the river and repairs may not be made in time. No red ribbon, no fireworks, and no special foods some have ordered.

  48. A huge snowstorm blows through the day before causing an avalanche that took out half the town, including the church and Christmas tree in the town square.
