Paulette D Marshall and a Giveaway!

Hello, dear readers!

I’m beyond excited to visit with my Petticoats and Pistols family! Today, I want to share a little about my latest book, The Railroad Tycoon Rescue, a story filled with romance, secrets, and a touch of suspense.

One of the things I absolutely love about writing historical romance is the research that goes into each book. For this story, I spent time studying medicinal plants their healing properties, their dangers, and the fascinating ways they were used in the past. That research led me to incorporate one particularly potent plant into my novel in a rather…unexpected way. But I won’t spoil it for you! You’ll have to read it to find out how it changes everything for my heroine, Etta.

I have a deep admiration for strong, independent women, especially those who faced hardships in the Old West. Etta is a perfect example of such a woman. Living in the South after the war, she’s been doing everything she can to survive on her own. But survival isn’t always enough when someone else wants what you have.

Etta’s knowledge of plants becomes her shield and her weapon when she’s faced with an unwelcome suitor who refuses to take no for an answer. With a little creativity (and some well-timed botanical assistance), she manages to make him leave earlier than planned. But escaping one problem only leads her to another…

On the other side of the country, Cornelius-Cory, as he’s known, has all the wealth he could ever need. What he doesn’t have is a wife. And according to his grandfather’s will, if he doesn’t marry before his 23rd birthday, he stands to lose his inheritance. Tired of being pursued for his money, Cory takes matters into his own hands and applies for a mail-order bride, keeping his fortune a secret.

When fate and a tragic train derailment throw Etta and Cory together, neither of them is fully prepared for the secrets that threaten to pull them apart. With unexpected visitors, accusations, and the past closing in, will they find the happy ending they so desperately seek?

If you love stories of resilience, faith and romance wrapped in the charm of historical settings, The Railroad Tycoon Rescue is a book you won’t want to miss!

I pray you enjoy it.

A Giveaway!!!

Tired of only being wanted for his money, and with an urgent need to marry to keep his inheritance, Cory applies for a mail-order bride through his cousin’s agency. He tells himself he’ll let her know before their wedding that he’s actually wealthy. After all, he doesn’t want to start their marriage with a lie.

After her parents’ death, Etta has sold nearly everything she owns just to survive. Now, the man who owns the mortgage has made it clear, marry him, or else. Desperate, she fills out a mail-order bride application, and sneaks away under false pretenses. She plans to tell her intended about her situation before they marry. But fate has other plans when the train she’s traveling on derails, leaving her injured and vulnerable.

With danger lurking, secrets unraveling, time is running out, will Cory and Etta overcome their past to build a future together?

I’d love to hear from you! What do you love about historical romance? One winner will be picked from the comments left below. The winner will receive an eBook of The Railroad Tycoon Rescue.

  1. I love reading historical romance novels because I usually learn something new about the time period or something that applies to our time.

  2. I really enjoy reading books written in that era, because I actually learn things that I hadn’t known before. I really like the characters.

  3. The book sounds interesting. I love reading historical books because I learn things I did not know in an entertaining way.

    • Sharon, thank you. I love historical books too and visiting sites. Learning while you read a entertaining story is a great way to learn and then it isn’t as boring as it could be. I agree with you.

      Have a good day.

    • Teresa, I love to read too when I have time. Before I started writing I read a lot.

I have always related to western, historical and always have. But I do love to write contemporary too.

      Have a good day!

  4. Welcome Paulette! How exciting! I’m not sure I have read your books! And this one sounds good! I love historical romance. I love sinking into the past and what it must of been like. How they lived, their environment, and how they survived with all the elements that came with living in that era. And I love hearing how they used ordinary plants for any aliment or sickness they had! That would be research I would love!

Is it unlimited Kindle? If not, I hope I win! LOL I love the story line! You like drawing? What are the subjects you like drawing?

    Many blessings to you!

    • Oh cool! I’m reading Honorable Husbands series now! I’ve read two thus far! LOL Yes, even a series of 25! So, I guess I’ll get to yours eventually!

      • Tracy,
I have a book in the Hopeful Husbands that is part of that big series. It comes out July 3, 2025. It’s called Mail-Order Frieghter. There are some wonderful authors in that big series.

    • Tracy, all of my books are on Kindle Unlimited. I love escaping into a new historical romance. Yes, their lives were very hard back then but that also shaped who they were too.

I haven’t had much time lately to draw, but I usually draw scenery. I am working on one that is a lake with mountians (Eddie Mountians in California ) in the back ground.
Do you draw? If so what do you draw?

      • Hey Paulette! Hope you read this! Anyway, I love drawing unusual things. Lineman boots I I j=guess is still life, portraits, and flowers. Really anything that might inspire me!

Thank you for this article and telling me about your new book in the series, Hopeful Husbands.

        Again, Best wishes to you!

    • Molly, I am always amazed on the different ideas and history. There are many ways to look at everything. I love visitng the places or museums, national parks… there is so much out there.
I love reading historial romance book too.

      Have a good day.

  5. I love historicals. I want to see how they lived, problems encountered, and how they solved them. It’s a good way to learn about history as well.

    • Karijean, I agree with you, I love history. There is a lot of history to learn. I find in my research that there can be conflicting infromation sometimes. But we can lean a lot from our history.

  6. I love finding out more about historical events through reading historical romance. I’ve learned so many interesting facts about different periods in time.

    • Kim, I agree with you. I love to pick up book and enjoy all it has to give me, especially a historical. Or visit a museum or a history day at a national park. So much to learn and so little time.

      Have a good day!

  7. I love reading historical romance. I love the simpler times, the stage coaches, train travel, and the adventures one would see while traveling. I like the simple cooking on the campfires and the old wood cook stoves and the hard work that the husbands and wife’s had to put in every day just to get by. I enjoy reading about the clothing the women would often have to make themselves for their family and the rules couples had to go by while “courtin.” It was a very interesting time and fun for me to read about.

    • Connie, I agree with you, especially the simpler times even though they worked hard. Thier clothes were beatiful, except for the corsetts. I would not like that. I cooperate some of the older ways in my life, like cooking over a campfire once in awhile.
      I love reading historicals also.
One of my books that I recently wrote about, I took a trip to the location that I was going to set the book in. There was so much information I included in that book. I will be going back to that location again this year. I would love to write a sequel to that book. It comes out in October 2025.

  8. I love visiting the past generations, exploring the way they had to live, situations they came across, and the various attitudes and characters of the people. Finding romance is the frosting on the cake, after all the angst, terror and fighting the unknown. This book sounds very intriguing. I look forward to reading it.

    • Quilt Lady, me too. By your name it sounds like you are keeping some of the history alive in your life. I love quilts and have made a couple. I would love to make another one but with writing I never have the extra time.

I love going back in time to see how things were then too.

      Have a wonderful day.

  9. imagining myself in the time period and place of the protagonist is what leads me to read historical fiction. The book sounds like it’ll be a good adventure/love story!

  10. I like the history and learning how they lived and survived during this time. I always learn something new.

  11. Your book sounds thrilling! I love the going back in time part of historical romances. Hearing about different places back in history applied to a story makes it all the more “believable”… as far as the history part goes. Knowing you Indie authors really research the places and such is a bonus!

  12. I’ve always felt a connection to the old west time period. I am lucky enough to have known great-grandparents born in the late 1800’s. But there are certainly modern conveniences that I am thankful for!

    • Robin, I have always felt an connection to the old west too. I am thankful for modern conveniences too but there is something to about how simple things were back then and the food was so much better for us back then too.

      Nice chatting with you Robin.

      Have a nice day.

  13. I love escaping to a different time and place. I’ve been seeing your book in my book recommendations and have it in my wishlist. I hope to read it soon. It sounds great!

    • Christy,
I am honored that my books are on your wishlist! Thank you.

I hope you get a chance to read one soon and that you like it.

I love escaping into a different time and place too.

      Have a wonderful day!

  14. I enjoy reading historical fiction simply because I know that I am so spoiled by modern conveniences. I am not sure I would have survived in the rustic living conditions, the societal restrictions on women and the days of hard labor to bring something from absolutely nothing. I admire the true grit of the pilgrims and pioneers that built this country.

    • Danielle, I agree with you. I know I’m spoiled and back in 1800 with all my health issues I probably wouldn’t have servived that. When I was younger I think I could have held my own – if I was in 1800’s. I admire them and there is a touch of that survival spirit in me.

      Wonderful talking to you.

      Have a good day.

  15. Your book sounds amazing. I love reading about strong women who overcome the rules or norms expected of them. I enjoy mail order bride books and stories involving using plants for medicinal purposes. Makes me wonder how many cures and treatments are being overlooked or have been lost through the years. I’m sure a lot of them would be better than all the medicines with their side effects that we have today. Looking forward to reading i.

    • Sarah, I agree with you about strong woman.

I also agree that some of the cures and treatments are being overlooded and many have been lost. But there are at lot of people who use herbal cures now too. I use a lot of herbal treatments whenever I can.
That’s probably why I put those in my books.

It was nice chatting with you.

      Have a great evening.

  16. I have always enjoyed history and studying different cultures. Reading historical novels is a good combination of the both of them. We may be familiar with the places the stories take place, but the culture and rules of society were much different than they are today. I enjoy seeing those differences and how they result in the impacted the lives of people. Mail order bride stories have always interested me. We often consider them something particular to the historical West, but they are common in other areas and are still being done today. What drove women to this option historically isn’t much different from what drives many of them today. I am lucky that there are so many good authors out there that do the research to make their books as accurate as they can. As much as I enjoy them for the history, I am enjoying the for the good stories they are.

    • Patricia,
I agree with you. I enjoy a good historical novel too and there are some wonderful authors.

When I was reaseaching mail-order brides and proxy brides I was suprised learning that it was still in practice today.

Hope you have a wonderful evening.

  17. The Christian, historical books I love to read best are grounded in history, but also have the characters developed into ‘human’ type storybook people. This is getting to be the only genre I read anymore! I like losing myself in the past with events unfolding that could have happened to my US ancestors! (I’m a genealogy nut, too! ;~) )

  18. Sounds like a fantastic book and I just love books with a little adventure with along with faith and love. One of my favorite books to read is historical mail order brides and keeping secrets also a plus in a book.

  19. I love learning about how people lived in past times and I am often inspired by seeing the struggles they lived through and how they did it.
