Reading Olympics

I love the Olympics. The amazing athletes, the human interest stories, and the spirit of sportsmanship and patriotism. Every two years, my daughter and I get together to watch either the summer or winter games. She geeks out about it as much as I do, which makes it that much more fun. We love wathcing the big events like gymnastics, swimming, and track & field. But we also enjoy watching the niche events like equestrian, archery, and badminton. We even watched a few rounds of shooting, though I tried to imagine the competitors wearing cowboy boots and hats for a more western experience.

Now that the Olympics are over, I thought it might be fun to turn that sporting spirit in a more bookish direction. So, I’d like to invite you to participate in the . . .

If you were participating in the Reading Olympics, which event(s) would you be most likely to medal in?
.
  • Weightlifting – Reading the heaviest tomes
  • Sprinting – Epically fast reading
  • Wrestling – Taking down the TBR pile
  • Gymnastics – Reading in twisty, convoluted positions
  • Equestrian – Reading books about horses
  • Shot Put – Longest toss of a disappointing book across a room
  • Synchronized Diving – Diving into a good book with a reading partner
  • Archery – Pinpointing the exact right book for a friend
  • Relay Racing – Reading series straight through without dropping the baton to pick up a different book
  • Marathon – Reading an author’s entire backlist in a single year
  • Rowing – Participating member in a book club who keeps conversations on track while never rocking the boat
  • Triathlon – Reading multiple books at the same time.
  • Sailing – Skimming the surface to sail through as many books as possible.
  • Boxing – Needing the largest number of boxes to pack up your personal book collection

My best two events would be Wrestling and Equestrian.

How about you?

  1. Equestrian – a book cover with a horse on it is a huge draw for me.
Wrestling – because there are so many authors I’d like to catch up with.
Shot Put – unfortunately there are a few of those too. Ha!

  2. I would be best in sprinting, wrestling, and relay racing. However, I would occasionally also enter a marathon because I’ve been known to read all the books by an author I find and love. I usually have a triathlon going because I’m always reading a novel, a Christian nonfiction, and an Audible book at the same time. I read a lot — nearly 500 books a year, counting all categories.

  3. What a fun idea! The events I could contend for a medal in are Sprinting, Marathon,& Relay Racing. I would also like to introduce a new event: Re-reading a bunch of books you know you already love (usually performed after multiple Shot Put attempts!) I’m not sure what this new event could be called though. Lol!

  4. Relay Racing and I would take the gold in Boxing! In fact, I am working on that now since we’re moving LOL! I still have books from my childhood and I am now almost 76 years old.

  5. Triathlon, Sailing, and Boxing. I constantly read several at a time, I’m known for skimming several books and I have a ton of books scattered throughout my house to box up.

  6. My events would be wrestling and triathlon (occasionally). I will be reading a book, but then I get an ARC and have to put the first book on hold. Right now, I’m reading three books.

  7. Equestrian without a doubt. I’m a 73 year old still wanting a horse old girl. I think everything I’ve written has a horse in it somewhere, even if it’s a carousel or Breyer horse or Painted Pony or a painting on a wall.

    Sigh.

  8. For me it would be Boxing and Relay Racing. The closest I come to Shot Put is throwing books in a box to go to the thrift store. I have even thrown two or three in a waste basket 🙂

  9. Relay Racing, Marathon and Equestrian because if there is a horse on the cover, a cowboy can’t be far behind.

  10. My main event would be Wrestling. My pile of TBR has gotten pretty big lately!

I might throw a little bit of Sprinting in there, too. That would give me a change to speed-reread some of my favs so I don’t get too bogged down with only new ones.

  11. For me it would be Archery (I did this when I was working a librarian), Relay Reading (I did this not long ago), and definitely Boxing (don’t even bring that one up to my husband).
We, too, enjoy the Olympics. We didn’t miss much of them this year. I got to watch them 3 times most days. Live during the day, prime time, and again after midnight.

  12. Wrestling & Boxing. I have quite a collection of pb books that I have read & keep, but; I will loan them out to my friends to read & return. Love the Olympics, watched a lot of them on TV this year.
