My Favorite Things – Dragonflies

Hi everyone, Winnie here.

When I sat down to think about writing this post I had trouble figuring out what my subject would be. I have lots of favorite things-family, friends, a good seafood boil, chocolate chip cookies right from the oven, road trips with friends, and so much more.

But I decided to simplify and go with something whimsical – my love of dragonflies. I’ve always been entranced by them – I can remember when I was a little girl playing in the backyard and watching them dart here and there.  They were so colorful and so fast I just thought they were wonderfully magical.

Back then we called them mosquito hawks, mainly because that seemed to be what they fed on. I don’t know if that’s a regional thing, because when I moved away from the small South Louisiana town where I grew up and said mosquito hawk, nobody knew and I was talking about.

Over the years I’ve collected many items with a dragonfly theme, from teacups to trinket boxes to jewelry and everything in between. I thought I’d show you a bit of my collection today, so here are a some photographs.

Here are some teapots, tea cups and saucers – these marry my love of all things tea with dragonflies 🙂

Here are some pitchers, both big and small!

I also have some platters, tidbit tray and a decorative spoon

Here are a few of my trinket boxes and candles

And of course I couldn’t resist adding some dragonfly bling to my jewelry box

Here is a miscellaneous collection of dragonfly collectibles, a wall hook and some items from my crafting days

Some tote bags and coin purses

I’ve managed to slip dragonfly images on some of the logoed giveaways I’ve purchased in the past…

And also some bookmarks I’ve saved in my ‘giveaway closet’ to put in reader baskets

I have other items but I think I’ll stop there 🙂

So tell me about something whimsical that you have a fondness for.  I’ll draw a name from all of my commenters and that person will win their choice of one of my books and any item from the last two pictures – my logoed giveaways or one of the dragonfly bookmarks

  1. Winnie! What a great assortment of items!!! Years ago my mom gave me a couple of items with birds on them and next thing I knew, I had a collection going and one of my several Christmas trees is bird themed. I had intended to have it be very simple with a few birds and nests but friends started giving me ornaments so now it’s a thing and fairly elegant.

  2. Love your dragonflies! My daughter too, has dragonflies everywhere. Mine thing is giraffes. I even have a life-size head on a ten foot pole, peeking through the palm fronds in the yard.

  3. Good morning Winnie! What a collection! The only thing I have with dragonflies(yes, here in Florida we call them skitter hawks) is a quilt my aunt made me. I purchased the fabric years ago and gave it to her. She surprised me with a quilt! I love many things that grow and fly in my garden! It’s my happy place! But, I have always loved daisies and sunflowers. So, I will go with them!

    Many blessings!

  4. Wow! Love your dragonfly collection.

I love heart-shaped items. It started from childhood, if my brothers and I had a like item, they were marked star, diamond, and heart for me. Simple for Mom to mark and solved any argument as to whom had which item.

I bring out most of my hearts for Valentine’s. But I’ve collected quite an assortment over the years.

  5. What a great group of items. Lovely. My mother loved strawberry items and I have all sorts of things with strawberries. My favorite us the timer. It sits next to a turtle timer as I like turtles.

  6. What a wonderful collection. Treasures. I enjoy the sweet I have a small miniature frog collection which I just started.

  7. I collect dragons. I have figurines, jewelry, bookmarks, toys, stuffed ones, and even a nesting dragon set.

    • @Debra At the casino most of the new machines seem to involve dragon themes so I decided to get myself a necklace with dragon beads to wear when I go. I was hoping for good luck but so far it hasn’t helped me haha…but they are definitely cool looking and a neat thing that you collect.

  8. Oh wow a great collection. I used to collect pigs. I have them all over my kitchen and kind of run out of room for them. The past few years I started collecting thimbles from different places. They are small and don’t take up much room in the house.

  9. Special and beautiful. Very impressive. Such good taste. I have never collected anything but as I got older I appreciated being surrounded by black and white photos which are meaningful and unique.

  10. I like butterflies and dragonflies! I have at least one dragonfly necklace, some bookmarks, and I think a mug. Honestly, if I went looking, there might be more than that! lol!! I also have things with honey bees on them, though I collect a lot of different things.

  11. oh what a wonderful collection. I love dragonfly’s also. I collected Boyd’s Bears at one time and Precious Moments. I love butterflies and have planted a butterfly garden and every year we get lots of moths and butterflies. I love humming birds and keep a feeder for them. Well the list could go on. But right now my husband and I are retired so collection is not going to happen right now. We have plenty of collectibles from the past to enjoy.

  12. When I was young I collected horse figurines which I bought from Woolworth’s at the time when I had a little saved. I eventually gave them away when I got older. Now I have small glass shapes – animals, people and bottles.

    • One of my daughters had a collection of horse-themed items as well when she was younger. She’s married with kids of her own now and her collection is still at my house and her old bedroom 🙂

  13. I love butterflies as they are so beautiful and a variety of colors. To keep with your dragonfly theme I have one pin from Avon which is a Dragonfly, and it is beautiful. I have never worn it as I do not dress up anymore. It rests in it’s original box. Things I have collected are eggs, one crystal and the others ceramic. Most of them are also from Avon. Boy, I bought lots of ornamental items from Avon in the past. Your collection is beautiful.

  14. I love dragonflies, butterflies & hummingbirds because one grandma said she was going to come back and visit as a dragonfly and the other said she would come back as a butterfly or hummingbird so every time we saw one it was them watching over us. I remember when we moved to Maine, on my daughters’ first day of school, I saw a dragonfly watching them and flying around until they got on the bus.

  15. As I’ve matured I try to keep fewer things (much still needs to be done!). In high school and college I liked owls and had an owl pendant and other items.

Have you read Iba Ibbotson’s “The Dragonfly Pool”? It’s a good yarn.

  16. Mine would be blue roses, but I also keep an eye out for butterflies, too.

Winnie, my mom grew up calling dragonflies “devil’s darning needles” and still dislikes them. She was told as a child that if she lied or swore, the devil’s darning needle would sew up her mouth. I always refer to them as dragonflies. You have a lovely collection.

  17. I collect horse and dragon items… love all of your dragonfly items… I recently got a beautiful dragonfly necklace.

  18. You have some lovely dragonfly items. Makes me wish I was collecting something along those lines.
I don’t have a specific theme I collect a lot of. I will pick up Irish themed items if they strike my fancy. The other thing I will get when I find them are old books printed in the 1800’s or earlier if I could ever find one. They are fascinating and tell so much about the culture and viewpoints of the time. I have found novels written around WWI and WWII a great look at the mindset of the people and nation at the time. It can be more revealing than current books being written about that time. I remember reading a book written in the 1940’s set in Washington, DC and Front Royal, VA. It gave excellent insight into how lives were at the time, plans being made. It ended with the radio broadcast of a day of Infamy and how it changed the paths their lives would take. I would tell you what it was, but it is the only book one of our dogs chewed up. (Thankfully I had finished it.). I have a 1911(?) book written for those Brits heading to India with the East India Company. It is a combination of health information and helpful hints for daily living in India (how to hire household help, bargain in markets, etc,). My first one was an 1865 or so big book on how to be a housewife and mother. Not much we would agree with today. I have one on The Allentown flood and one on children’s games of the 1800’s. There are some small ones from a religious group on how young men and women should behave. They all make interesting reading.

  19. I have an an angel collection. I used to collect bells, but quit and now only have my favorite bell.

  20. I enjoyed your post. I remember that years ago a neighbor of mine had a thimble collection.

  21. What a coincidence. I also collect things with dragonflies on it as well. However, my collection is not as extensive as yours is. Thanks for sharing!

  22. Hi Winnie, Love your dragonfly collection. I like to collect hummingbird things & cardinals. Enjoy your books & post on P&P. Hope, you are enjoying your summer.
