Today is National Chocolate Chip Day!
It made me think of how good our house smelled when I’d walk in the door after school and Mom would have a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies. They were my favorites.
I tried and failed so many times over the years to recreate her cookies and couldn’t.
Mom was never good about writing down recipes or sharing them, so I finally gave up.
After she passed away, I happened to find her recipe, tried it, and the cookies were just like the ones she used to make. With every bite of chocolate-imbued nostalgia, they took me back to those days when I’d come home and she’d ask about my day while I sat at the counter and had a glass of milk with a cookie or two.
If you need a good chocolate chip cookie recipe, here’s the one from my mama.
Mom’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup salted butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar, packed

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Cream butter and sugars. Add egg and combine. Add vanilla. Stir baking soda and salt into flour then add a little at a time to dough. Stir in chocolate chips.
Use a cookie scoop, or a tablespoon to drop dough on parchment lined baking sheet.

After spending her formative years on a farm in Eastern Oregon, hopeless romantic Shanna Hatfield turns her rural experiences into sweet historical and contemporary romances filled with sarcasm, humor, and hunky western heroes.
When this USA Today bestselling author isn’t writing or covertly hiding decadent chocolate from the other occupants of her home, Shanna hangs out with her beloved husband, Captain Cavedweller.
Chocolate chip are great but I’m a big fan of ginger cookies (snaps, gingerbread people, pfeffernusse, Joe Froggers…), too.
Those are all yummy choices, Mary! Have a lovely day!
Dipped in milk is my favorite way to eat chocolate chip cookies.
They are soooo good that way! Thank you for stopping in today!
I have a muffin recipe that has chocolate chips, walnuts or pecans, and coconut that I love. And if someone doesn’t like one of those ingredients, they can just leave it out, and the muffins are still good.
The muffins sound amazing, Janice! I love coconut and pecans. Thanks for stopping in today!
Thank you for sharing mom’s recipe. Enjoying them spending time with the one who baked them is the best memory to keep. Especially fun when in pj’s and watching tv.
They are sweet memories thinking about baking together. And it is fun to snack on cookies and watch movies. Have a great day!
Our family enjoys chocolate chip cookie bars, but we also have a cookie “recipe ” that has no measurements, just add with love. It comes out a little different each time, but always tastes good- so we keep making it 🙂
I love that you bake them the recipe with love! That is awesome – and so fun that it turns out differently each time!
I am not a chocolate chip person – got sick on some bad ones as a kid – love snickerdoodles instead!
Snickerdoodles are one of Captain Cavedweller’s favorites. Thank you for popping in today – and sorry about those bad chips when you were young.
Hey Shanna! Thanks for the recipe! I’m a big fan of peanut butter cookies. My grandson and I make them now and again. My mother worked when my brothers and I were getting off the bus. My brother, Billy Joe, and I would fry canned biscuits. We would pull out the biscuits to make a hole. He would fry them while I made the icing out of sugar and milk. Best donuts! LOL I know! We couldn’t be more than 9 or 10 years old!
As soon as we got in off the bus, we would come in and one of us would call Mobile 20(my dad’s handle) and let him know we were home. “Base to Mobile 20.” Dad: “Go ahead.” Me: We are home.” Dad: “Check your Mom’s list on the table.” Mom always had a to do list for us. Me:”What’s your 10/20?” Dad: “Over at old Baker place. I’ll be home in an hour.” We were latch key kids long before it was named!
Great memories! Have a blessed day!
Oh, Tracy! I loved what you shared, and made me remember the CB we had at the house in dad’s office. Anytime he needed something he’d call “Crow’s Nest Base” and one of us would be off on an errand. Peanut butter cookies are my dad’s favorites! Have a day full of joy and blessings!
My favorite is melted chocolate chips and lots of peanuts frozen together.
That sounds divine! Thank you for stopping in today!
Love chocolate chip cookies. Like when the chocolate chips are soft and gooey
That is the best. When the chips are melted and gooey and warm from the oven. Yum!
I really like chocolate chip cookies!
Me too! Thanks for popping in today!
That recipe sounds delicious.
I love them in cookies or straight out of the bag. Just a handful.
I eat them straight out of the bag too. Sometimes I mix them with dried cranberries and nuts as a snack. So good! Thank you for stopping in today!
I love chocolate chip cookies with toffee chips in them but my favorite recipe of my mom’s was her spice cookie recipe, they had chocolate chip and butterscotch chips in them.
They sound so good, Naomi! I love butterscotch chips too! Have an amazing day!
Love them warm with a glass of cold milk for dipping!!!!
They are so good that way! Thank you for stopping in today, Kate!
I love to grab one or two and eat them while I’m reading a good book.
A great way to enjoy them! Have a lovely day, Connie!
Lately I like to eat them kind of warm.
So, so yummy when they are warm and the chips are gooey! Have a great day, Joannie!
You can’t beat homemade chocolate chip cookies right out of the oven with a cup of tea!
It is hard to bake warm, freshly baked cookies. Thanks for stopping in today, Kathleen!
I love warm chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven. I confess that I have started using refrigerated cookie dough.
Nothing wrong with that, Elaine! Enjoy your cookies!
Chocolate chip cookies are my favorite. I am going to try this recipe. Thanks
I hope the cookies turn out great, Debby! Have an amazing day!
I add toasted oatmeal and chopped walnuts to my chocolate chip cookie dough and we both like that. But I’m not convinced there is a bad chocolate chip cookie recipe in existence.
If there is a bad recipe, I’ve probably tried it! LOL! Thank you for stopping in today!
I like my chocolate chip cookies sandwiched between a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Yum, yum! I love cookie sandwiches!
I like my chocolate chips baked in crescent rolls so that I can tell myself that I am eating semi-healthy.
LOL! I love it! Thanks for sharing that idea, Becky!
I love Chocolate Chip Cookies!
I love chocolate chip cookies and I love them just by themselves, I dont have to have anything with them. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your delicious sounding recipe.
They are so good, even on their own. Thanks for popping in today, Alicia!
What a great recipe! I like cookies with coffee. Recently I was eating a piece of chocolate with coffee and I wondered which one I loved more and I decided I need coffee and want chocolate haha…
I always tell myself dark chocolate is good for me, so it’s a health thing to eat it. Ha! Thanks for stopping in today, Rachel!
Your mom’s recipe will be made in my house later today, with just one modification: before dropping the dough onto a baking sheet and baking for 10 minutes, I’ll have to do a taste test to determine whether or not I have enough chocolate chips in that cookie dough! 😉
Maybe you should taste test some dough for me too! Hope they turn out great!
I most certainly will!! 🙂 🙂 🙂
I’m not a fan of Chocolate Chip Cookies but my favorite is White Chocolate and Cranberry
That is such a delicious combination! Thanks for stopping in today!
One of my favorite chocolate chip cookies is a recipe from my niece. It has oatmeal, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I also eat chocolate chips when I need a chocolate fix:) Mixing them with mint chips is good too.
Oh, I hadn’t thought about mixing with mint chips. Will have to give that a try. The cookies with oatmeal and spices sound good too!
with milk
Can’t go wrong with the classics of milk and cookies!
I love chocolate chip cookies, but haven’t found many that compare to home made. I’ll eat the anyway I can, but with milk or hot tea is best.
It is hard to beat milk and cookies!
Just about any way they are fixed – you can’t go wrong with them!!
I love cookies and baking them, but I should not do it anymore as I tend to eat too many for quality control only. One must be certain the product is properly baked, after all. 🙂
It is so hard to eat just one!
