Chocolate Chip Cookie Day

Today is National Chocolate Chip Day!

It made me think of how good our house smelled when I’d walk in the door after school and Mom would have a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies. They were my favorites.

I tried and failed so many times over the years to recreate her cookies and couldn’t.

Mom was never good about writing down recipes or sharing them, so I finally gave up.

After she passed away, I happened to find her recipe, tried it, and the cookies were just like the ones she used to make.  With every bite of chocolate-imbued nostalgia, they took me back to those days when I’d come home and she’d ask about my day while I sat at the counter and had a glass of milk with a cookie or two.

If you need a good chocolate chip cookie recipe, here’s the one from my mama.

Mom’s Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients:

1 cup salted butter, softened

1 cup brown sugar, packed

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1 egg

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 teaspoon baking soda

pinch of salt

2 1/2 cups flour

2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Cream butter and sugars. Add egg and combine. Add vanilla. Stir baking soda and salt into flour then add a little at a time to dough. Stir in chocolate chips.

Use a cookie scoop, or a tablespoon to drop dough on parchment lined baking sheet.

Bake for 10 minutes until cookie are just set and barely starting to brown. Remove from oven and cool for a minute before transferring to a wire rack to cool.

Yield: 36 cookies

  1. I have a muffin recipe that has chocolate chips, walnuts or pecans, and coconut that I love. And if someone doesn’t like one of those ingredients, they can just leave it out, and the muffins are still good.

  2. Thank you for sharing mom’s recipe. Enjoying them spending time with the one who baked them is the best memory to keep. Especially fun when in pj’s and watching tv.

  3. Our family enjoys chocolate chip cookie bars, but we also have a cookie “recipe ” that has no measurements, just add with love. It comes out a little different each time, but always tastes good- so we keep making it 🙂

  4. I am not a chocolate chip person – got sick on some bad ones as a kid – love snickerdoodles instead!

  5. Hey Shanna! Thanks for the recipe! I’m a big fan of peanut butter cookies. My grandson and I make them now and again. My mother worked when my brothers and I were getting off the bus. My brother, Billy Joe, and I would fry canned biscuits. We would pull out the biscuits to make a hole. He would fry them while I made the icing out of sugar and milk. Best donuts! LOL I know! We couldn’t be more than 9 or 10 years old!

As soon as we got in off the bus, we would come in and one of us would call Mobile 20(my dad’s handle) and let him know we were home. “Base to Mobile 20.” Dad: “Go ahead.” Me: We are home.” Dad: “Check your Mom’s list on the table.” Mom always had a to do list for us. Me:”What’s your 10/20?” Dad: “Over at old Baker place. I’ll be home in an hour.” We were latch key kids long before it was named!

Great memories! Have a blessed day!

    • Oh, Tracy! I loved what you shared, and made me remember the CB we had at the house in dad’s office. Anytime he needed something he’d call “Crow’s Nest Base” and one of us would be off on an errand. Peanut butter cookies are my dad’s favorites! Have a day full of joy and blessings!

  6. That recipe sounds delicious.

I love them in cookies or straight out of the bag. Just a handful.

  7. I love chocolate chip cookies with toffee chips in them but my favorite recipe of my mom’s was her spice cookie recipe, they had chocolate chip and butterscotch chips in them.

  8. I love warm chocolate chip cookies fresh out of the oven. I confess that I have started using refrigerated cookie dough.

  9. I add toasted oatmeal and chopped walnuts to my chocolate chip cookie dough and we both like that. But I’m not convinced there is a bad chocolate chip cookie recipe in existence.

  10. I like my chocolate chips baked in crescent rolls so that I can tell myself that I am eating semi-healthy.

  11. I love chocolate chip cookies and I love them just by themselves, I dont have to have anything with them. 🙂 Thank you for sharing your delicious sounding recipe.

  12. What a great recipe! I like cookies with coffee. Recently I was eating a piece of chocolate with coffee and I wondered which one I loved more and I decided I need coffee and want chocolate haha…

  13. Your mom’s recipe will be made in my house later today, with just one modification: before dropping the dough onto a baking sheet and baking for 10 minutes, I’ll have to do a taste test to determine whether or not I have enough chocolate chips in that cookie dough! 😉

  14. One of my favorite chocolate chip cookies is a recipe from my niece. It has oatmeal, cinnamon, and nutmeg. I also eat chocolate chips when I need a chocolate fix:) Mixing them with mint chips is good too.

  15. I love chocolate chip cookies, but haven’t found many that compare to home made. I’ll eat the anyway I can, but with milk or hot tea is best.

  16. I love cookies and baking them, but I should not do it anymore as I tend to eat too many for quality control only. One must be certain the product is properly baked, after all. 🙂
