Cover Reveal and a Giveaway!

“Stone Landry stared into the green depth of her eyes and brushed a knuckle across Emma’s soft cheek. “One day.” He dragged air into his lungs. “One day I intend to court you, lady. That’s a promise. Hangman’s daughter or not.”

Courting Miss Emma, Book 2 of the Hangman’s Daughters series, will soon come your way and I want to share this gorgeous cover. The colors and fonts are really nice. I wish her skirt was a bit slimmer but maybe the wind got under it and ballooned it out. After all, we have a LOT of wind in Texas! I also love Emma’s hair and think it’s perfect. With sixteen orphans to keep track of, she wouldn’t have had a lot of time for her hair.

As with her sister Maura in Book 1, she’s never been courted, kissed, or even come close. At 26 years old, she would’ve been considered an old maid back in 1868. But when Stone Landry bought the property next door, Emma began to see herself as a woman with something left to give.

Stone gets her dander up right away after one of the orphan boys wanders over onto his property. He brings the kid back—along with a sharp rebuke for Emma to watch the children better. She sees red of course.

So, that’s how their relationship starts. They mix like oil and water. It isn’t that he doesn’t like kids, he was just never around any.

Add in a couple of adult camels and their baby and you get the idea. The kids weren’t going to stay on their side of the property line and that was that.

It’s a fun story with a group of unscrupulous bad guys trying to take both Emma’s and Stone’s land and shut down the orphanage. It leads to a land war with the couple fighting tooth and nail to stop them.

Wars have been fought over land since the beginning of time. Someone big and powerful always thinks they can take what they want and no one can stop them. It’s a familiar theme in westerns and it happens today all over the world. Sometimes the little guy wins.

This is a sweet romance with lots of action and a mix of humor thrown in. I think you’ll like this story that shows the depth of Emma’s and Stone’s hearts and their commitment to keeping Heaven’s Door open. No matter the cost.

Ever since I wrote Knight on the Texas Plains, I’ve always put children in my stories. They make the stories richer. Animals are another constant and I’ve had a variety—horses, dogs, cats, a monkey, a talking parrot, and now camels. You never know what’s coming next.

I’m giving away an ebook copy of the first book, Winning Maura’s Heart. To enter, tell me the one-word name of Maura’s love interest.

  1. I’ll definitely want to read this and especially to see where the camels fit in the story. I live close to a fort where the US Army brought them in the 1850’s and until about 30 years ago, we’d see little stories in the newspaper that somebody saw one or two camels wandering in the desert. I don’t think they were really out there, the stories made you wonder if the date was April 1st. But it was fun to wonder if we’d see one during our next trip to Vegas, give ya something to discuss on the way. 🙂

    • Rachel, the Army did import camels to Texas because they could withstand the heat and didn’t need a lot of water. Then when the forts closed, they just turned them loose. That’s what they did with Stone’s so he took them with him. It wasn’t unusual to see them roaming around looking for food. I’m glad I could incorporate them into my story. Makes it fun. Have a wonderful day.

    • David, after the Army turned them loose they roamed all over looking for food. 🙂 Probably eventually they all died off. Thanks for coming to read my post. Have a blessed day.

    • Alisa, Emma really does deserve her HEA so I gave her one! She was a tough woman. I loved creating Calhoun. He was a special man. I hope it’s cooler where you are. 107 here today.

  2. Oh Linda… I’m so excited to read this new book. I can’t wait to see what Emma’s love interest is like.
Calhoun was perfect for Maura, so I know whoever you pick fir Miss Emma will be perfect.
I love you and I was so excited about your awesome update you shared with me. My prayers continue.

    • Miss Tonya, I do think you’ll like Emma and Stone. His father gave him that name because he wanted him to be as hard as he could make him. And he did. He’s perfect for Emma because she saw a glimpse of softness beneath the layers of rock. He thought all he was good for was being a soldier. Yes, yesterday was celebration time! Enough of the bad. I hope your day is fulfilling. Much love.

  3. Hi Linda! Calhoun … I love that name. And I loved the unfolding of his and Maura’s love story. Now the adventure continues with Emma. I’m so excited to read what you have written about Stone and Emma. It’s going to be good – that I know.

    • Kathy, Emma definitely has her work cut out for her. 🙂 Just like Maura did, but she’s just as tough and determined. I think you’ll like the story. Wish it was coming out tomorrow. I would love to have been with you on your recent trip to the Big Horn. Camping in that glorious open air. Love you, lady.

  4. Linda, hello friend! I feel badly that we haven’t seen each other all summer! Now I have my grandkids this week! It’s been crazy! We MUST do lunch! I CANNOT wait to read this book! I’ve been anxious to go back to these fun sisters! I loved the last book so much. Can’t wait to see how Emma breaks Calhoun down and gets her HEA!!!

    • I know, Valri. plus my constant medical stuff kept me busy. But lunch soon! Let me know when you’re free. I think you’ll like Emma. She’s one tough woman! There’s a surprise in this book in the last third of the way. She never gives up the fight–not in keeping the orphanage or finding softness in Stone. I’ll let you know when my pubisher puts it on NetGalley. Love you.

  5. Hey Linda! Yep, Calhoun. I loved the first book! Unique in that it’s about Hangman’s daughters. So neat! I now wonder about those Hangman’s families. What made you think of it? If you said, I’ve forgotten. I read so many books!

Looking forward to this book too Linda!

    • Tracy, I got the idea for writing this from watching the hangman in westerns. He’s always alone. Quiet. Never stays long, just does his job and leaves. I did some research and the reason for that was that no town wanted him to stick around. They even shunned his family and I needed to find a reason why Maura and Emma were shunned so it fit perfectly. Plus no one has written a book (that I can find) about the hangman. He carries such a stigma and people won’t get too close. Even today, society feels the same about the men who carry out executions. For that reason, the prisons keep that secret. No one knows who administers the final dose. I’m glad you’re anticipating Emma’s book. There’s lots of humor in it. Thanks for coming.

  6. Calhoun. Your book sounds very intriguing. Love to put them on my reading list. Thanks for your blog today.

    • Quilt Lady, the U.S. Army imported camels to Texas due to their ability to thrive in dry, hot climates. They didn’t require much water. But when the forts closed, they just turned them loose to go where they wanted in search of food. People living in the southern part of Texas reported seeing them for quite a while. Eventually, I think the camels died off. They disappeared anyway. Stay cool today. Gonna be hot. Much love.

  7. Linda, this looks wonderful, of course! I always love your covers, too. I love that you use children and animals in your stories–it DOES make them richer, for sure, and I have never read a story of yours that I didn’t absolutely love.

Gonna be a hot one today–stay cool! Love you, my filly sis!

    • Using children and animals just comes natural to me, Cheryl. There were so many orphans in need of care. Emma fights tooth and nail for these kids at Heaven’s Door. Better not hurt one. Ha!

We are burning up down here! It’s so hot. This summer has been horrible. It was 120 degrees F in Death Valley yesterday and still 120 at midnight! I wouldn’t go there if they paid me. Today here it’s predicted to get 108. Me and heat don’t get along. Hope you have a good day, my Filly Sister. Much love.

  8. Since I haven’t read Book 1, I looked it up on Amazon hoping to find the name on my own. Unfortunately I was unsuccessful but by reading through the responses I see that the name is “Calhoun”. I hope that’s not considered cheating. I look forward to reading both books. Thanks for the chance to win a copy.

    • Glad you left a comment, Vickie, that got you in the drawing. Some of the others probably did the same thing. You’re in the drawing. Have a great rest of your day.

    • Colleen, I hope you’ll give Courting Miss Emma a try when it comes out. I’m praying your A/C holds out. Arizona has been on the news a lot for it’s soaring temps. Stay cool!

  9. His name was Calhoun. I read this book on Kindle and really enjoyed it but you know me, dear Linda, I love my print books. Haven’t been able to find it locally. I need info on where I can order it please. Looking forward to book 2. Hope you are doing well! Hugs and love your way!

    • Miss Ruth, thanks for coming. Winning Maura’s Heart is very difficult to find and about the only option is to order it online at Amazon, B&N, Books-A-Million, Target, Walmart and those places. However…it’s coming out in paperback in November and it’ll be cheaper. I would send you one from my dwindling supply except I didn’t order but a few and I’m getting low. Might be best to wait for the paperback version.

As far as health, I’m doing the best I can but it’s hard. Pray for me. Sending oodles of love and great big hugs!

  10. Calhoun. I just read the sample of book 1 from Amazon. It got me hooked, can’t wait to read both books!

  11. I have not read this book yet (but I have read every other book of yours!), but the answer is Calhoun. I am a huge fan, hope to read more of the Legend family!

    • Hi Toni, thanks for coming. I’m glad you like the Legend brothers and their father. If you want more, try the Lone Star Legend series. In A Cowboy of Legend, Gracie is grown up and living in Fort Worth. A Cowboy Christmas Legend is about Sam’s son. And A Man of Legend is about Houston’s son. They’re carrying on the family tradition. Thank you for reading and liking my books. That’s so sweet. Have a good rest of your day.

  12. Calhoun, your book sounds like a Great read and I love the book cover! Have a great week.(not entering this ebook giveaway, but thank you, I don’t read ebooks at all, I am not tech savvy.)

  13. I have Winning Maura’s Heart, so there is no need to enter my name in the drawing. Emma’s story sounds good, as usual, and I look forward to reading it. Take good care of yourself. Stay cool. Hopefully you won’t have any storms and the heat will ease off soon.
