A COWBOY FOR THE SUMMER–by Danica Favorite (AND A GIVEAWAY!)

It’s funny, when I first decided to write A Cowboy for the Summer, I had in mind a May/December romance, and that was going to be a huge focus of the story. After all, we see all these older men with younger women in the media, but why not have an older woman get the young guy for a change? But something funny happened during the writing of the book, and as always happens, the story takes over and it becomes something I didn’t expect.

For those who’ve been following the Shepherd’s Creek series, you know that Abigail has long been the rock of the family, having taken over the mothering portion of raising her sister, Laura, and her cousin, Josie, when their mothers died. So where is the happily ever after for a woman who has devoted her life to others? I started thinking about Abigail and all the things she had given up to be there for her family. Having a younger man in her life, just starting out, gave her the vision to see what her own dreams might look like. The story very quickly became the idea of what it means to finally examine what your dreams look like.

Interestingly enough, as I was writing this story, I had the chance to leave my job of nearly 20 years for a new job. My editor commented that she wondered how much of Abigail’s story was about me and the changes I was going through. As I told her, while this is very much Abigail’s story, I think it’s one that many women can relate to, spending their lives devoted to family, and having a moment where they have the chance to follow something else. As a newly-minted empty nester, I’m finding lots of opportunities to ask myself the question, “what next?”

I’m currently writing this from Budapest, where my new company is headquartered. I’ve been in Europe for work for almost three weeks, and my family is at home. A few years ago, I would have never been able to leave them, so now I’m taking advantage of my dream to see the world. The picture of my book is me, on release day, showing off my book in Hungary. I’d have never imagined this opportunity a few years ago.

Some of you are in stages of life where you can’t go to Europe for a few weeks, and that’s okay. But I hope, wherever you are in life, that you take a look at your dreams, and even if you can’t do the big thing you’ve always wanted to do, that you find some way of getting closer to it. You never know where it will lead, even if it’s something you don’t think is possible now.

  1. I want to be able to contribute something of worth to society, not just sit here at home all the time.

  2. So many of my dreams have come true that I feel truly blessed. I guess, if I had to name one now, it would be for ALL my close family to become recommitted to following God in devotion and obedience.

  3. Good morning and welcome! Goodness, I have had a few changes in my life, I’m not sure where I go next! I retired over a year ago now and I am a caregiver to my mother a few days a week. I’ve been through empty nest, moving to a new location, being a grandmother(most wonderful blessing), position changes in my career, working and taking care of my mother, to retirement. So many changes.

I would like to travel more, but, I would also like to get back to my art. It seems the most likely adjustment I could make now and rewarding. I’d like to focus one one subject and one hobby! I’ve went through my life learning so many crafts! From crocheting, to learning new crochet stitches, to quilting, sewing raw edge appliqué, different painting techniques, and it goes on and on! I would like to settle on one major thing and go where it leads me. And I think I understand when a writer ends up down a different road from the original idea!LOL So, much to learn and do……so little time!

Thanks for dropping by! Your story sounds wonderful!

  4. My dream was to become a mother. God has blessed me with three great children. I also was able to homeschool them which was a blessing.

  5. So many of my dreams have already come true that I feel guilty asking anything more for myself. I have been blessed far beyond what I deserve!

  6. My secret dream was I always wanted to be a teacher and a mother. I graduated from college as a non-traditional student when I was 39. I started homeschooling my two youngest, then I taught mentally challenged adults on the job training and I finished by teaching pre-schoolers for a number of years. I’m now retired. My dream now is for all my children, grandchildren, and greats to love God and lead Christian lives.

  7. Currently working on my dream.

Congratulations on your new job and the opportunities it has brought and your new book release!

  8. The book sounds good!! And, I do have my dream job! God dropped it in my lap in January of 2020, when I talked with an author about being her proofreader/editor, and my business is continuing to grow. Last year I worked with fourteen different authors. I have a firm base of authors that have me do all of their books.

  9. I loved this book Such a beautiful story of forgiveness and God’s love. At 72 years old and being married for 51 years, I have seen God fulfill so many dreams that I had as well as ones I didn’t have. We have served God together for all these years, pastoring, teaching in a Bible school, traveling to several countries teaching the Word and are preparing now to travel to Kenya for 2 months. When God puts a desire in your heart, He will bring it to pass, often in ways we can’t imagine.

  10. At the ripe age of 78 ( 79 in December) I have had many dreams throughout the years. My first love was sewing and I toyed with the idea of being a seamstress but decided I couldn’t make enough at to pay me back. Second, I wanted to have a used book store with a coffee bar/shop included, much like I had read about in some of the books I read. This particular dream even carried me so far to look at a location in the Knoxville, TN farmers market square which is a historical site in the midst of downtown. Needless to say, I was not successful with either endeavor. I did manage to bring one of my travel dreams to fruition when we visited Hawaii for my 44th birthday, which happens to be December 7, 1944. We had a fabulous time and had full intentions to return but as of this date that did not pan out and never will, unfortunately. I do have much to be thankful for as my husband and I will celebrate 50 years of marriage on November 3. He has been a Godsend to me and I can truly say we saved each other, with GOD’s guidance. Each day we thank Our Lord for all our blessings.

    • Judy, I love hearing how you’ve pursued dreams, even if they don’t come to fruition. To me, that’s also inspiring, and I am so happy that you shared. You inspire me!

  11. My biggest dream came true when I became a wife & mother. God has blessed me in many ways over the years! We’re empty-nesters now, my husband & I enjoy life together, & we love watching our son (& d-i-l) & daughter spead their wings & travel down their own journeys of life.

I love to travel (road trips; not a fan of flying) & have been blessed to be able to see many places in this beautiful country. I’ve been to 39 states, plus DC. One dream I have that I’d love to see fulfilled is to visit Maine & the other little NE states. My health isn’t what it used to be, but one day, God willing, we hope to tackle that dream! 🙂

  12. I’m fortunate to be living my dream. I was self employed with a small data entry business out of my home. It was great while my children were in school because I was always there and when the last one graduated from college I sold my business and stopped working to travel. I’ve been to almost every state and I usually take Amtrak trips because of the view of our country out the window. A lot of times I fly to Chicago and then take the train home via whatever route I want to see again. I fell in love with Montana while looking out the train window so now I try to get up there at least twice a year.

  13. thanks for your post today and welcome. about 8 years ago my husband and I wanted to go on a cruise when we retired. over the years we have brought up cruises to certain places and then checked them off. my husband retires in about 6 months, and we are still talking about it. we have gotten to where we would like a small ship but not a specific destination. quilting dash lady at comcast dot net

  14. My secret dream is to be with the Lord. Seeing His face and being held in his arms. Thank you for sharing. God bless you.

  15. I have been lucky enough to do much of what I wanted. Travel has always been high on my list. We have been empty nesters for a while now, but didn’t take advantage of that sooner. We made the mistake of doing all those things that just “had” to be done. Now we are older and health issues have interfered with several planned trips. I was supposed to spend 4 weeks in Germany and The Netherlands with my daughter while she is on a trip for work and be granny nanny to my granddaughter. My passport renewal was messed up so here I sit. I am planning several trips for the next couple of years: Machu Pichu, go through the Panama Canal then circumnavigate South America with a side trip to the Arctic, a European Christmas Market river cruise, and fdirst on the list – a trip to Ireland, Scotland, and England.
The advice I wish I had known was to travel while you still have good health and can do most of what you want. The work will always be there. I am going to travel as much and as far as I can.

    • Patricia, you’ve seen far more of the world and done more than anyone I know. I’m glad you still have the yearning. I’m sorry you missed your trip to Germany. Darn it! I pray you get to take the rest of them. Love you, lady.

  16. At this stage in my life my dreams consist of trips I want to take. For instance, I want to do a Mediterranean cruise and I want to do a cruise to Alaska.

  17. I have been fortunate to do a lot of the things I wanted to and now I’d like to travel to some of the few places in the country I’ve missed. I’d also like to finish off Canada and I am annoyed that they split the Northwest Territory into 3 and I have to do more travel to tick off the one; of course, I’d still be annoyed to have 2 more to tick off and they are on opposite sides of the old Northwest Territory.

  18. I would love to run a shop that sells books, coffee and quilts – 3 of my favorite things – with a resident cat or 2 to welcome my customers. Thanks for the chance to win a prize.
