Today is free day here at Petticoats and Pistols, and it’s my turn. Yay! It’s also Halloween. Now, it’s been a long time since my kids were young enough to dress up in costumes and walk around the neighborhood, and I don’t yet have any grandchildren or other youngins’ to dote on and enjoy. We neighbor gals get together, set up a table in front of someone’s house, have hot chocolate or apple cider and pass out candy while chit-chatting. It’s great fun and a way for me to really enjoy the holiday more than just dispensing candy at the door.
Back in the day, both when I was a kid and when I had kids, we not only dressed up in costumes, we dressed up our horses – and had a grand time. Well, you here at Petticoat & Pistols know that I love pictures. So, after searching the internet for a while, I came up with these adorable kids and their horses or ponies in costumes. I absolutely love people’s imagination and talent.

Batman and Robin Pirate and their parrot

Super Mario McDonalds

A knight and their horse Alice and the Mad Hatter

A farmer riding his John Deer tractor Buzz Lightyear

Darth Vader and Storm Trooper
This is one of my favorites. A barista and Starbucks coffee.

And, okay, while this technically isn’t a horse costume, it is pretty cute. You have to admit it 🙂

So, what are your plans for tonight? Whatever they may be, stay safe and have fun!
Cathy McDavid has been penning Westerns for Harlequin since 2005. With over 55 titles in print and 1.6 million-plus books sold, Cathy is also a member of the prestigious Romance Writers of America’s Honor Roll. This “almost” Arizona native and mother of grown twins is married to her own real-life sweetheart. After leaving the corporate world seven years ago, she now spends her days penning stories about good looking cowboys riding the range, busting broncs, and sweeping gals off their feet — oops, no. Make that winning the hearts of feisty, independent women who give the cowboys a run for their money. It a tough job, but she’s willing to make the sacrifice.

I think that’s Woody, not Buzz Lightyear.
We’re staying in. Youngest son hasn’t gone out for years and our court only has 6 houses, so no one comes to the door. It’s a regular Monday night, here.
Though the horse has Buzz Lightyear colors, so it’s probably Woody and Buzz.
You are right, Denise. The child is Woody, and the horse is Buzz Lightyear. I mess up 🙂
My children are older, and I live in the country where I don’t have children come to the door anymore, so we plan to have a quiet night.
Sounds like a good plan 🙂
These are so cute. I loved all the ideas. Happy Halloween.
Same to you, Tonya!
We live in the woods and rarely get a trick or treater cutie at the door. But, I always leave a light on and have candy to share … just in case. My daughter goes all out for Halloween. It’s fun to watch the grandkids have fun.
If that were me, I’d be eating the candy – oops 🙂
We had trick or treat on Saturday and the cutest costume we had was a little boy dressed up like a toilet. We all got a big laugh out of it. The mother said they his dad helped him make the costume.
That’s hilarious!
Oh, my goodness, Cathy. These are so, so cute. I’ve never heard of such a thing. Some people are just so darned clever!
We live in a very quiet neighborhood with mostly retired folks, and in the entire 34 years that we’ve lived here, I don’t think we’ve ever gotten more than 15 kids stopping by. But without fail, I leave my porch light on and have candy ready.
Happy Halloween!!
We got a lot of kids the last couple of years. I wondered if it was because of the pandemic and less social/public activities available to kids. We’ll see what tonight brings 🙂
No plans for us. We live out in the country, no kids around to trick or treat, and no young kids in the family. Guess we will just have to eat the Halloween candy ourselves!
I’ll be eating candy with you, Connie 🙂
These are adorable, Cathy! What a fun idea. I think the John Deere tractor cracked me up the most. Although, I come from a family of Star Wars nerds, so Vader and the Storm Trooper scored pretty high, too. 🙂
I’m always so impressed and amazed by people’s creativity. Wish I could do stuff like this.
Pics are so cute! I don’t do Halloween any more. I don’t like all the nonsense around it. I also don’t have any kids in the neighborhood, so I don’t buy candy since I’d be the only one to eat it!
I have that same problem with eating it 🙂
Great photos! We will be staying home hoping for at least a few little trick-or-treaters (zero last year 🙁 ). Watching The Wolfman or listening to War of the Worlds. Happy Halloween!
Happy Halloween to you, too 🙂
Great Photo’s I will be staying in we don’t get trick or treaters here because where we live in the country! But my grandchildren will be going to a Parade and costume party in our community if it don’t rain! Have a Blessed evening!
Same to you, Sarah 🙂
Hi, wow, I love all the costumes you showed us, they are all so very cute!! Well, I live in a small town and over here we already had Halloween on Sat. , we usually have trick or treaters the Sat. before Halloween if Halloween doesn’t fall on a Sat. so Sat. was really busy here, we had tons of trick or treaters , my daughter and her little family always come over and hand out candy to trick or treaters , they live out of town and they don’t get any trick or treaters over at their house, so they come over here and pass out their candy. It was alot of fun all kinds of costumes were out there trick or treating, after the candy was all gone, which was ALOT, we went to our Church Halloween Carnival where our grandson was helping out on a game booth. We had alot of fun, so today will be a pretty relaxing night. Happy Halloween to you all and stay safe.
Sounds like a great time, Alicia. My father-in-law is at his church today, dressed as a cowboy (love it) and handing out candy. They’re having all kinds of fun activities, too. Hope you have a fun evening tonight.
No trick or treaters in our area. When our kids were young there were a number of young families but now not only are there no kids there are fewer adults….a number of empty houses and some demolished or doublewides moved away. So glad our kids got to have the fun of dressing up and trick or treating. Our houses are 1-4 miles apart so I had to drive them and part of the fun I remember from when my brother and I went trick or treating was walking with neighbor kids from house to house. Happy Halloween!
We had such fun as kids, trick or treating. That was really nice of you to drive your kids and let them enjoy the experience.
Nobody comes out to our house, since our neighbors who had 3 young children recently moved. We live out in the country, too. Staying in, as usual.
We didn’t have as many kids as we thought we might – lots of leftover candy.
these are so cute. thanks for sharing. every year my daughter in law dresses up her and her horse. this year she was a minion and her horse was a banana. So cute. We are staying in and relaxing having a quiet evening. My husband had surgery this morning and those are doctors orders. LOL He is dong a good job of it.
That sounds adorable, Lori. And speedy recovery to your husband.
What fun photos and memories. I remember some of the decorations and costumes we did up and how much fun it was.
I remember dressing me and my horse up as hobos. I was more a teenager than a kid, but still fun 🙂
