Happy 4th of July!!!!

Gals and guys, cowboys and cowgirls, I am wishing you the most wonderful of Independence Day holidays you could possibly have.

One of my annual ways to remember how to be grateful for what brought us to this point is to watch 1776, the amazing musical that revisits the trials of the Second Continental Congress, the chosen men who had the guts to declare our independence under difficult conditions of treason, compromise, ego and eccentricity…

If you’ve never seen this movie, you will be blessed by a look into what came before…

Before we were an expansionist nation that migrated west and pioneered a Western culture we all love…

A look into the “before”…

So we can enjoy the now!

And the song written for John Adams (William Daniels) “Is Anybody There?” as Adams reflects on the struggle to bring a new country into being against huge odds…

You can see this here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fq4H4SAb6s

Enjoy your holiday folks, and if there’s not a parade or fireworks in your schedule, that’s okay.

Grab a hot dog… say a prayer… Thank the Lord… Share your M&Ms with others… Help a neighbor… Watch a patriotic movie with the A/C roaring if you’re hot, hot, hot…

And may God bless you and yours on this wonderful, celebratory day.

When folks criticize America… when they scorn us or roll their eyes, or crab about this or that or the other thing, I think of the sacrifice that’s gone before us…

Before you and me…

Before our grandparents and our great-grandparents, and the soldiers and the pioneers and the war that didn’t just tear us apart but bound us together as one nation, under God…

Those first folks, seeking religious freedom, sailing a fierce ocean to land in an unknown land…

To leave fair England for the robust and forested shores of a New World.

It took guts to get us here, friends. Guts and faith. And it will take the same to keep us afloat.

Happy Independence Day!

  1. Happy 4th of July Ruthie, and all of you Fillies, and everyone else. It’s our Independence Day. Stand proud, stand tall, and enjoy what our forefathers fought for and gave us. FREEDOM!
God Bless American, our home sweet home!!

  2. Thank you, Ruth! That is beautiful! I wish everyone could read that. I’ll be sure and watch that movie, too. This morning, I’ll be going to our community 4th of July parade which starts at 8 AM.

Happy Independence Day, everyone! God Bless America!

    • Sharon, thank you so much! I was working on the farm yesterday, then at a festival for the 4th with grandkids and kids so I never got back over here. Thank you guys for being patient with me!

  3. Welcome Ruth. God Bless you and yours today also. Ohh I had forgotten about this movie. Thanks for bringing it up.

    • Lori, I love, love, love this movie. It is such a wonderful glimpse of the sacrifice we tend to ignore…. Those families risked everything.

I wonder if we’re big and bold and brave enough to do it, Lori!

  4. Ruthy, lovely and heartfelt post. Thank you and I hope you and yours have a wonderful 4th of July. Hugs, Phyliss

  5. Happy 4th of July everyone! Having just returned from a trip to Washington DC recently, my thoughts are definitely with those who struggled to begin this great country! I’m so grateful for them! It was a true sacrifice and I appreciate it.

    • Valri, I agree. There’s nothing like immersing yourself in that history to have a wake-up call about what life was like and what folks faced. I am in awe of their courage… and resilience! And every time I pass a historic graveyard and see the host of young mothers’ stones and lost babies and toddlers, I realize how much we take for granted.

Give me the age of antibiotics and immunizations!

  6. “It took guts to get us here. Guts and faith”. So true. Thank you for reminding us. Now if only more people would remember the faith part.

    Happy Independence Day to everyone.

    • Oh, you know I love that part! I can’t imagine being able to handle life’s ups and downs and twists and turns without my faith and we’ve kind of messed that up over the last 45 years…. We got so “stuff” oriented, we forgot to be simple.

Simple is good. And it can absolutely be complete. If we let it!

  7. “1776” the movie is on TCM this evening starting at 10:15 PM! What perfect timing.

  8. If you ever have the chance, go to Philadelphia. I’m lucky to have grown up near there and have had many school trips. And I was a history minor.

And, I’ve been to many other East Coast sites, Revolutionary battlegrounds, important places which gave birth to our nation. I love our country. We’re so fortunate for the way our country was founded. Let us never forget the history.

    • Denise, I love Philadelphia. Two of my sons went to the University of Pennsylvania and that gave me 8 years of hanging out in Philly, merging in 65 mph traffic from a dead stop at South St. entrance, Independence Park, Rita’s Lemon Ice, Pat’s Cheesesteaks, the food trucks at the Quad, the Little Italy sector, Old City…. Manayunk and the cool boathouses on boathouse row, all lit up for the holidays…. 🙂 I love Philly and exploring the history of it was so much fun!
