Movie Quotes: You Can’t Say it Better Than That!

I love good dialogue, especially when it delivers the unexpected or makes me laugh. Dialogue sparkles when it reveals insight into the character, adds conflict, or moves the plot forward. I also like dialogue that adds sexual tension—hee haw!  Here are a few of my favorite western movie quotes.

The Ououtlawtlaw Josey Wales

Josey Wales: When I get to liking someone, they ain’t around long.
Lone Watie: I notice when you get to disliking someone they ain’t around for long neither.

Once Upon a Time in the West

Wobbles: You can trust me, Frank.
Frank: Trust ya? How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders, a man who can’t even trust his own pants?

True Grit

Rooster Cogburn: Damn that Texan, when you need him he’s dead.

The Magnificent Seven

Chico: Ah, that was the greatest shot I’ve ever seen.
Britt: The worst! I was aiming at the horse.

Wyatt Earp: You gonna do something or just stand there and bleed?

The kid:  Well, I guess they had it comin’.
Munny: We all got it comin’, kid.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Man with no name: See, in this world, there’s two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

 The Cowboys

Jebediah: Above all, forgive me for the men I’ve killed in anger…and those I am about to.cowboy

 Pale Rider

Preacher (played by Clint Eastwood): Well, if you’re waitin’ for a woman to make up her mind, you may have a long wait.

 Support Your Local Sheriff

Jake: You want me to tell Joe Danby that he’s under arrest for murder? What’re you gonna do after he kills me?
Jason: Then I’ll arrest him for both murders.

The Searchers

Martin: I hope you die!
Ethan: That’ll be the day.

Blazing Saddles

Lamarr: Taggart.
Taggart: Yes, sir.
Lamarr: I’ve decided to launch an attack that will reduce Rock Ridge to ashes.
Taggart: What do you want me to do, sir?
Lamarr: I want you to round up every vicious criminal and gunslinger in the West. Take this down: I want rustlers, cut-throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperadoes, mugs, pugs, thugs, nit-wits, half-wits, dim-wits, vipers, snipers, con-men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bush-whackers, horn-swagglers, horse-thieves, bull-dykes, train-robbers, bank-robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers, and Methodists!
Taggart: Could you repeat that, sir?

GWTWWestern movies aren’t known for love or romance, so I offer one of my favorite romantic quotes from Gone with The Wind:

Rhett Butler (who else?) You should be kissed — and often — and by someone who knows how.

And finally, here’s one from my soon-to-be-released book Left at the Altar

Josie (when the groom fails to show up for the wedding) You don’t suppose something might have happened to Tommy, do you? An accident?
Meg (the bride) It better have!

Do you have a favorite book or movie quote to share?  If not, which of the movie quotes above did you like best?

  1. Those are some good lines. This one made me laugh.

Once Upon a Time in the West

Wobbles: You can trust me, Frank.
Frank: Trust ya? How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders, a man who can’t even trust his own pants?

  2. Fun quotes today, Margaret! My favorite was the first one from Josey Wales. You just can’t get more classic lone western male than that. Thanks for the smile this morning! 🙂

  3. I like this one. It reminds me of My Cowboy and his 2 a.m. walk through of his close-to-calving herd. I don’t know who said it.

A real cow boy ain’t the one that gets on a bull to show off to a bunch of girls a real cow boy is the man that is out in the snow at 10 below caring for his cows before anything else.

  4. Fun post!!

“Sheriff Cobb: We’ll give you a fair trial… Followed by a first class hangin’.” Silverado
“First getting shot, then getting married. Bad habits.” The Long Riders
“The man I knew could lose both arms and still try to kick you to death.” The Horse Soldiers

These aren’t from movies but I liked them because they’re in the western spirit:
There’ are two theories to arguin’ with a woman. Neither one works. Will Rogers
Never miss a good chance to shut up. Will Rogers
He hasn’t got anything under his hat but hair.
When you ask for free advice, you get exactly what you paid for.
You can’t keep trouble from visiting, but you don’t have to offer it a chair.

I also like the lines from a Toby Keith country song “Get Got” that fits here too I think. I hope it’s okay I posted it. Some of the lyrics are lines are from Will Rogers.

Said the old man to the young man, Leanin’ on the fence,
    Spittin’ out his wisdom, It didn’t make much sense;
He said im’ma give ya somethin’,That’ll help you in a jam.
Or on the job, with a women, Use it where you can.

When you find yourself in a hole stop diggin’,
Cotton row gets long, keep pickin’,
Fish ain’t bitin’, then son keep fishin’,
Always drink upstream from your cattle
Beware of cards and women, They run cold and hot
Sometimes you’ll get it, Sometimes you get got

When it comes to country living, You can’t do no wrong
Listen to a front porch prophet, Who’s been living twice as long
Precious little gems, From wouldn’ts and I won’ts
Old man soapbox sermon, Simple do’s and don’ts

Like–Ya’ always catch more bees with honey
Less is more ‘cept love and money
Ride in the truck between your buddies
You won’t have to get out and open the gate
Tell the truth it’s twice as easy
    If you’re right or not
Sometimes you’ll get it, Sometimes you get got

Don’t mix your whiskey with decision
    Ask forgiveness, not permission
    Do a rain-dance when it’s mistin’
    They say timing’s everything
Talk less, Just listen; You can learn a lot
Sometimes you’ll get it, Sometimes you get got.

  5. I was just re-reading a favorite of mine by Mary Connealy when I remembered the part as I was reading I got bashful for the character and smiled so big lol. It was Mary’s book, Montana Rose. The character doesn’t realize she says the things she’s thinking out loud. And at one point she interrupts the church service with her outburst. It’s a sweet outburst for her new husband but still you can feel the awkwardness and comedy of the moment when she realizes that she’s spoken out loud and everyone is looking at her! I love it!

      • Me too Mary! I have read this story many time! I love it so much!! I love how strong, manly and loving Ref is too! The whole series is one of my favorites! I love re-read them! Onto the husband tree.

  6. Oh, I loved them all.My favorite quote is from The Mummy when she says something about getting their comeuppance – love that word for some reason lol.

  7. Hi Margaret! Loved the post! That one by Wobbles and Frank made me LOL. And that one by Wyatt Earp is such a classic isn’t it? There’s so fantastic quotes out there but my memory fails me. I know you’ve made many in your books! Can hardly wait to read Left at the Altar to discover mire like that one above ha!

  8. One of my favorites is from Casablanca. “I’m shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on here!” (The croupier hands him his money.) “…Your winnings, sir.” “Oh, thank you very much!”

  9. “We’re all travelers in this world. From the sweet grass to the packing house. Birth ’til death. We travel between the eternities.” This is from the movie Broken Trail. Thank you for your great post, Margaret!

  10. Thanks for your great post, Margaret. I have several favorite quotes but can’t think of all of them now. One is from “When Harry Met Sally”, “I’ll have what she’s having.” Another is from “The Princess Bride”, “My name is Inigo Montoya.” Another is from Loretta Chase’s book LORD PERFECT. “She’s the kind of woman who causes accidents just by crossing the street.”
