Christmas and Cowboys

As we find ourselves with Christmas less than a week away, I’m sure many of you are as busy with last minute shopping and preparations as I am.  I thought this would be a good time to pause for a few minutes to reflect on the meaning behind all the hustle and bustle of Christmas.

And along those lines, a friend sent the poem A Cowboy’s Christmas Prayer by S. Omar Barker, and I thought it would be good to share it with all of you.

And to make it extra special I’m sharing it as a link that will take you to a video of a cowboy reciting the poem.

* Hear a recitation of A Cowboy’s Christmas Prayer

And as a bonus, I’ve also included a link to John Denver singing Christmas For Cowboys.

I wish you all a very merry and blessed Christmas, filled with family, love and peace.

  1. Winnie, I miss John Denver! I have always been a lover of cowboy poems but this prayer is something else.

May you have a Merry Christmas and a new year full of success, good surprises and blessings abundant.

    Peace, Julie

  2. Oh that Cowboy’s Christmas Prayer always makes me tear up…so beautiful 🙂 I hadn’t read it yet this year so thank you so much for posting it!!!

  3. Julie – yes, I’ve always loved John Denver music. He gave a concert at the college I attended and it was so neat hearing and seeing him in person.

Gillian – glad you enjoyed this poem. It’s been around a long time but I just discovered it a few weeks ago

  4. Winnie, I love this poem. I think it really captures fully the life of the cowboy and it certainly was and still is not glamorous. But I think I like to write about them because despite all the hardships men choose that life.

    Have a wonderful Christmas!!

  5. Cheryl, Linda and Elizabeth – glad you all enjoyed the post. And yes, cowboys certainly have that rugged, down-to-earth, romanticism – even in modern time! Might be why I married one 🙂

  6. Enjoyed THE COWBOY’S CHRISTMAS PRAYER.
I had forgotten about John Denver’s CHRISTMAS FOR COWBOYS. It was great to hear it again.

I am almost finished THE CHRISTMAS JOURNEY. Wonderful characters and story. Can’t wait to pass it along to my daughter. She’ll enjoy it when she gets a chance to read it after Christmas. She works as a clerk at the Post Office and barely has time to breath the past few weeks.

I hope you and yours have a wonderful and blessed Christmas. May 2011 bring nothing but good.

  7. Tabitha, Jennie, Connie – So glad you enjoyed the post. I hope you all have a joyous Christmas.

Patricia – So glad you are enjoying The Christmas Journey. My follow-up to that story, titled The Proper Wife, come out in March. Hoping you and your family have a wonderful Christmas
