Junior Junior Rodeo

I had an overdose of cute a little over a week ago when I went to the Junior Rodeo. The contestants range in age from toddlers to 18 year olds and, as you can imagine, compete in age groups. Parents of the younger children get a work out, because a lot of them lead the horse through the events, be it poles or barrels or what have you. Here’s a cowboy dad running the poles with his little girl.

And a cowgirl mom running the barrels with her little girl.

Of course, some contestants had their own mount. This one was my favorite–

Here’s another shot of this young cowboy. They run two heats at the same time, so you can see an older contestant in the background, which gives you some scale for this little guy–

Hats off to parents who go the extra mile to give their kids these special experiences, regardless of the sport.

And here, just to add some perspective, are some scenes from the Rancher’s Rodeo four days later. I wonder how many of these guys and gals started off as juniors with their parents leading them through the barrels?

  1. Great blog, I was a junior rodeo girl growing up. These pictures bring back lots of memories. Wish I was that young again. Thanks for the walk down memory lane.

    1. How cool, Tonya! I did some 4-H, and gymkana when I was very young, but I never got to do junior rodeo.

  2. Oh my gosh! I love seeing these picture of kids in the rodeo. They are too darn cute.

    1. They were adorable. One little girl had a horse named Albert who tried to break the pattern and she yelled, “Al-l-l-l-bert!” It was so cute.

  3. Love this! Thanks hour sharing!

    1. You’re welcome, Melanie!

  4. Wow, they look so little! Kudos to the moms and dads running along side the horses.

  5. What great photos, Jeannie! I love the one with the miniature horse in the foreground and full-sized horse and rider behind. What a difference a few years makes!

    1. I love that photo, too, Karen. And it was an accident.

  6. What wonderful photos, Jeannie. Thank you so much.

  7. I absolutely love rodeos! The pic of the little guy on his pony is priceless! Thanks for sharing!

  8. I love rodeos and junior rodeos but my favorite is play days for the lil’ ones!

  9. The first rodeo we ever attended was the Little Britches Rodeo in Colorado Springs. Our whole family enjoyed it. Our girls who were not farm or ranch kids got to participate in one of the events – trying to get a piece of ribbon taped to a sheep. With the pack if children chasing the sheep, it still took a while for some one to get it. Not as easy as it looked. We have always enjoyed the children’s events at the smaller rodeos. Most of the rodeos coming to this area are professional or PBR events which unfortunately don’t include children’s events. The one you posted looks like a small local or fair event. Much more fun.
