jodi-thomasAs I began work on ONE TRUE HEART, I knew my hero would be a very intelligent man living in a little cabin in TwistedOne True Heart2
Creek, a lake community near Harmony in the map in my head.  Wouldn’t it be interesting if this man had a nutty sister who believed she could see the future?  You know the type:  Sweet, but not in the mainstream of anything.  We’ve all got one in our family.  I looked around and didn’t see one in my family so I must be it.

Running through the stories of Harmony I’ve always had a bookstore on the main street.  One night, while I was writing, I noticed a sign in the corner between two over-crowded shelves that advertised palm readings the only night the bookstore was open.  As the stories went along the sign would change.  Once it read:  Fortunes, two hands for the price of
one.

Sooo, in the corners of my mind I knew that one day I’d have to put a fortune teller in Harmony.  Two years ago I was in a fortune teller dolldelightful little second hand store in Denison.  I noticed a beautiful hand-made doll, a fortune teller complete with cards in her hand and dice in her box tied to her waist.  The doll traveled all over Texas with me while I was signing and finally made it home to my desk.

I had so much fun researching gypsy fortune tellers and learned much about the fascinating British Romani people. I especially enjoyed reading about the different types of gypsy wagons. While my hero, Drew, is trying to live his normal life, maybe even get a date with a fascinating woman who has returned to Harmony to recover, his little sister is making his life impossible.  You see, she was reading a man’s fortune when the sheriff arrested him for killing his wife.  She’s the only one who believes Johnny Wheeler is innocent, because she didn’t see murder in his past.  Kare defends Johnny and drives him insane while she drags her quiet, reluctant brother into a mystery that might get them all killed.

You’ll have to read to find out…unless you are a fortune teller, of course.

Even after over 40 books, I often feel like I step into a story as if it’s already a place in my mind.  I meet theJodi office 2 people just like my readers do and some nights I stay up writing late because I want to know what is going to happen. I don’t know if I’d believe a fortune teller, but I do believe in the magic of creativity.

    Thanks for sharing. Understanding the background of a story from the author’s view definitely gives me a deeper connection with the tale. I wanted to read One True Heart before. But, I now know that when I do, the pictures in my mind will be clearer.

    And although I love the heroes in your novels, Teagen McMurray is still my favorite!

  6. Hi Jodi! Welcome back to P&P! And with a brand new story that comes out on April 7. Your flow of creativity always amazes me. You come up with the most wonderful heartwarming stories. But I have to say that this book might be the most humorous of all. I love how it begins though with the wounded army veteran returning home, walking off the plane on crutches. It broke my heart. I have such a tender spot for veterans. And then you introduced Johnny Wheeler, arrested for killing his wife because she disappeared. He was so funny the way he got tangled up with that fortune teller. Lots of twists and turns to the end. Loved, loved it!

    I’m going to steal that Gypsy doll. That is so cute. Wishing you tons of success!

  7. very interesting post,,brought back some memories,,many years ago when I was a young nurse working at a hospital,,we had a patient who was a forture teller,,as a “treat” to us he would tell our fortunes,,this is my first and last experience with a fortune teller,,as i left that room i felt like I had just shook hands with the devil,,he told me a lot of stuff,some good but mostly bad,,he scared me to death,,i was literly shaking when i left that room,i had been talked into going by the other nurses,,i was one of the last to go,,which i wish I hadnt,,but I did,,and oh my goodness every single thing that man said to me came true,,some in different ways but within a year it had all happened as he had said,,one of the nurses who had talked me into going reminded me of what he said after everything happened,,and apolized to me for asking me to go in that room,,do i believe in fortune tellers,,i do now,,didnt then,,would I go back ,NO!,,somethings we are just not supposed to know,not so sure this is a gift to have this ability or not,,just thought id share what happened to me

    Although I’ve read several of your other books, I haven’t read any of your Harmony series, however this one sounds VERY intriguing. Must they be read in order or can I start with any of them and get a good idea of what is going on?

      I hope you will read my Harmony series. They are stand alone books, but WELCOME TO HARMONY is the beginning of the series and introduces the main characters. Harmony has become like my second home!

  14. Hi Jodi! Love that I get to visit Harmony again. If you consider this your funniest book yet, then we’re in for a treat.

    The wagon is much more than I would have expected even for a wealthy family in the 1890s … etched glass … and that ‘skylight’ ceiling. Wonderful that the people who bought it were able to restore it!

  21. How many of us have had siblings that have gotten us into trouble with some crazy idea or action? Luckily, it seldom involves murder. It will be nice going back to Harmony for another visit.
    Love the doll. Funny how something like that will strike your fancy and you must have it. On almost every trip we take there will be something special I find that has a connection to place or time, or maybe just a piece that brings out whimsy. It will find its way home with us and becomes a treasure. I am trying to keep them small. I once found a 4 foot stuffed bear but was able to talk myself out of it.
