Writing with Emotion, Tension & Conflict by Cheryl St.John

Sherri here today, and I have a special giveaway. This is what I”m reading this week! Now, in the interest of full disclosure, Cheryl is a good friend and was kind enough to include an excerpt from one of my books on page 228. This is an incredible tool for either the beginner or the experienced writer.

Here”s the back cover blurb:

Today”s highly competitive fiction market requires writers to imbue their novels with that special something – an element that captures readers” hearts and minds. In Writing With Emotion, Tension & Conflict, writers will learn vital techniques for writing emotion into their characters, plots and dialogue in order to instill that special something into every page.

I believe in this book so much, I”m giving away a copy to one lucky person who comments. If you”re a writer, or if  you know a writer in your life, this book is a must have!

Here is Cheryl”s impressive biography:

Cheryl St.John is the author of nearly fifty Harlequin and Silhouette books. Her first book, Rain Shadow was nominated for Romance Writers of America”s Rita® Award for Best First Book, by Romantic Times Magazine for Best Western Historical, and by Affaire de Coeur readers as Best American Historical Romance. Since then she has received three more RITA nominations, a Writer”s Digest award for a feature article, and several Romantic Times Reviewers Choice awards. Many of her books made the Waldenbooks Top Ten lists, USA Today, and Big Sky Brides climbed to #35 on the NYT list.

  1. I would love this book. I write stories and have loads of ideas but I need help with the next steps. This may just be the book that helps me move forward and one day be able to set my stories in motion.

  2. Sherri, I totally agree. This book is the very best writing self-help books out there. Over the years I’ve bought a whole bookshelf full but I never read because the writer doesn’t clarify or simplify enough for me to understand. So I never use them. I read Cheryl’s book all the way through. If you’re a writer you definitely need this book, whether you’re on your first one or have written a whole slew of them. The information covers all levels of writing.

Congrats, Mary and Sherri, for having part of your book used as an example!! That’s awesome.

  3. I have loved Cheryl’s books and I am sure this is a helpful one. Perhaps reading it would get me writing. I write little short stories for my own amusement but maybe this would help me have enough nerve to share them!

  4. Hi Sherri,
I would LOVE to have this book. I have been struggling with my stories and do need help. Too many rejections! Thanks.

  5. I’m adding my support of this treasure of a writing book. So many ‘how to’ books are dry and hard to understand. Cheryl makes the concepts current and easy and practical.

And there’s even a bit from one of MY books! Now, that can make one feel like a successful author. 🙂

Congratulations in advance to the book recipient!

  6. Congrats, Cheryl! I know you worked hard pulling this book together–and thanks again for including me and my work in your teaching. Here’s to many sales!!

  7. I am a newbie writer working on my first novel. With so many “helpful” books out there, it gets a bit overwhelming. I would love to get my hands on this book, especially since it’s recommended by one of my favorite authors..

  8. I enjoy Cheryl’s books and have for many years. I like her writing style. This books would be a good insight into her process. I keep thinking of writing, but never quite get around to doing it. This book would be a help as well as an inspiration.
